Tiger Woods Plays Best Round Of The Year At The Barclays (PHOTOS)

AP/Huffington Post   First Posted: 08/26/10 01:09 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:30 PM ET

PARAMUS, N.J. — Tiger Woods finally looked like the No. 1 player in the world.

In his first tournament since his divorce, he played by far his best round of the year Thursday at The Barclays, missing only one fairway and three greens in a 6-under 65 for his lowest score this year.

That put Woods in front with Vaughn Taylor as the early group of players were still finishing the opening round.

"It feels good to be able to control my ball all day like this," Woods said.

If he keeps the lead, it would be the first time he would be in such position after any round since his Australian Masters victory at the end of last year, and the first time on the PGA Tour since the second round of the Tour Championship last year.

So much has changed since – the car crash after Thanksgiving night, the revelations of adultery, five months away from the game and a broken marriage, which officially ended Monday.

His golf hasn't been very good, either, which is why Woods began the FedEx Cup playoffs 112th out of 125 players.

This was his lowest score in 46 rounds, dating to a 62 in the BMW Championship last year, and the timing could not have been better. He needs a strong week – starting with making the cut – to advance out of the first round of the playoffs.

And while Woods is quick to acknowledge that it was just one round, he could not have asked for a better start – 3-wood into the fairway, pitching wedge to 15 feet below the hole and a birdie.

More followed, even on the par 5s, which have given Woods fits in recent months.

He used his driver only twice, deciding that his 3-wood was enough to reach the corners at Ridgewood without having to take on the tops of trees that line the fairways. Plus, with saturated conditions from rain earlier in the week, tour officials allowed players to lift, clean and place their golf balls in the fairway.

"With the ball in hand, it's much more important to hit the fairways," Woods said. It was the first time since the 2006 British Open at Royal Liverpool that he hit his 3-wood off the tee on every par 5.

The two times he hit the driver turned out to be two of his best shots of the day.

With no wind on the 291-yard fifth hole, Woods hit a baby cut with his driver and knew it was good when the gallery packed in the grandstand behind the green let out a cheer that could be heard back on the tee. It landed pin-high and settled 15 feet away, and the eagle putt came up inches short.

Easy birdies have been in short supply for Woods this year.

The other drive came on the 18th, which he blasted more than 300 yards into the middle of the fairway. That left him a 7-iron that he hit to about 6 feet behind the hole for his 65.

More than hitting into the fairway was the shape the shot required, and pulling it off.

"It was just a low, bullet fade right around the corner," he said. "It was just the shape of the shot, because it was different than most of the 3-woods I played all day. I didn't hold a single 3-wood. I was turning them over. Now, the shape of the driver in the complete opposite direction ... and I hadn't hit a driver since the fifth hole."

Only the top 100 in the standings after this week are eligible for the Deutsche Bank Championship.

"I figure if I win, I should be OK," Woods said.

For one of the few times this year, he had reason to believe that was possible.

(This version CORRECTS Corrects to show Woods missed 3 greens in 2nd paragraph. Will be updated.)

My hero Tiger Woods. You should heed the words of Harry S.Truman, one of the greatest leaders in human history: "In reading the lives of great men, I found that the first victory they won was over themselve sand their carnal urges. Self-discipline with all of them came first.... The were patriots and unselfish." "Truth, honor and jjustice are at the basisof all human relations." "Mr. President, 1952.

Cruel game, golf. Doesn't take long to erase one's memory of one's "best round" now does it?

Where are those bloggers that were saying after yesterday's round, Tiger was back. I posted that one round doesn't mean squat! Boy some of you took offense to that, well, look at his score today, looks like yesterday's round was a fluke. That man has created so much misery for himself, not to mention last years knee surgery which ends many golfers careers.

Right ON... Where is that MR.T3.. Your main man Tiger is in the "Tank"
I didn't think you would "circle back" today.

The irony never escapes me that the nickname for professional golf's most prolific spokesman and walking billboard for big banks and financial institutions is -- Lefty. Nice guy, but one of the PGA's proudest members of, and generous contributors to, the GOP.

Speaking of whom, Phil is phlirting with missing the cut at a tournament the lead of which is currently being shared by some has-been who doesn't tee off for another two hours.

Anyone have any idea whom that might be? :)

He'll go back to being Tiger Woods, the Golfer, as opposed to Tiger Woods, the Guy Who Banged The Syrup Stains Off A Pancake Waitress.

LOL! I read this in another article.

I am thoroughly sick of all things Tiger. I would actually readprofiles of the ham'n'egger pros on the tour. You know, the guysthat have to qualify to play, rather than getting an automaticinvitation. You know, the guys that drive 100,000 miles a year tostay on tour, that have to beg for any kind of sponsorship, butusually don't get it. The guys that sleep in the back of the car orin a fifth wheel so they don't have to shell out the cash at thelocal Hampton Inn or Best Western. There are extremely talentedathletes who will never crack the top ten at a major, getinterviewed on the Golf Channel or ESPN, or make $20 million peryear out of winnings and for having themselves photographed wearinga Tag watch or driving a Buick. Start telling their stories andmove beyond el Tigre.

Hear, hear. Maybe people didn't like the Major's this year, but I did. Loved the shoot out at the PGA. Even enjoyed the British, And average Woods allows the guys who work hard and grind out a living to have a chance. Cheering for Tiger Woods is like rooting for the Yankee's, anyone who roots for the front runner doesn't like the risk of seeing your guy lose. Get past Tiger? no kidding.

It doesn't seem to matter who will lead the tournament because it will be solely focused on Tiger. I watch golf regularly and I know more about this guy than I want. Believe it or not there are other players out there. Its nice when one of the not so prominent faces wins.

Even when Tiger doesn't win - doesn't even come close, or even misses the cut - it doesn't matter. The story is always, ALWAYS, "What did Tiger do???" Makes me vomit.

Yeah, I'm certain that he is feeling much lighter now that hedoesn't have to carry around that $100million in his wallet.

He will make that back and some by the end of the year :)

Didn't even have to wait for the sportswriters, did you see his second round score, he's in 16th place. Maybe the Divorce climbed on board his back today, wouldn't you say?

Who to tell if Elin wasn't domestically abusing Tiger. Tiger seems like he would cover for her. Elin has a mean look in her facial expression if one looks deeply enough. I have a feeling that even though Tiger and Elin have two children together, chances are behind closed doors it was a loveless marriage. Al Gore is getting a divorce after 40 years just saying. Sometimes it might be less stress on both parties if they get divorced. I wish Tiger all the best, he can concentrate on his games and make back the millions that Elin got in her settlement for 5-6 yeas of marriage and two kids.

As they say, this too shall pass. Move on with your life Tiger and be careful of the people you surround yourself with.

you're not giving yourself enough credit for your own cranial talents in this regard, Dr. Martin.

domestically abusing tiger? nice way to go and blame this all on elin again. maybe he should have divorced her first before sleeping around with dozens of other women. and btw, if elin was the one who abused tiger, then why did his own neighbour say that he saw tiger shove and push elin when they had an argument?
