Scientists are planning to use the space station to grow a new kind of crystal for use in solar cells by 2013.

They say the vacuum conditions in space improve the quality of thin film crystals, giving them properties that are unachievable on Earth.

Sorry, but this news is about 40 years old. It had been prophicized that growing crystals in a zero gravity environment would fuse into a better solar cell.

Now if we could just make getting supplies and people into space much cheaper and less polluting, we might have a viable industry starting up there. Who knows what cool stuff we can dig out of the moon or even Mars.
