3 Reps Under Further Investigation Over Alleged Bribery Tied To Financial Reform Votes

LARRY MARGASAK   08/31/10 06:18 PM ET   AP

Campbell Crowley Price

WASHINGTON — House investigators have recommended that three lawmakers be further investigated to determine whether political contributions were improperly linked to votes on the huge financial overhaul bill.

The independent House Office of Congressional Ethics recommended that the member-run House ethics committee pursue potential rules violations by Republicans John Campbell of California and Tom Price of Georgia and Democrat Joseph Crowley of New York.

The ethics office recommended no further investigation of five other lawmakers in the same probe: Democratic Reps. Earl Pomeroy of North Dakota and Mel Watt of North Carolina, and Republicans Jeb Hensarling of Texas, Chris Lee of New York, and Frank Lucas of Oklahoma.

All offices of the lawmakers had received letters from the OCE by Tuesday and made the conclusions public.

President Barack Obama signed the financial overhaul bill into law July 21. It aims to restrain Wall Street excesses with the most sweeping overhaul of financial rules since the Great Depression, clamping down on lending practices and expanding consumer protections to address failures that precipitated the 2008 meltdown that knocked the economy to its knees.

The Democrats – Crowley, Pomeroy and Watt – voted for the final bill. The Republicans – Campbell, Price, Hensarling, Lee and Lucas – voted against it.

Campbell said he was "perplexed by OCE's decision, as they have presented no evidence that would suggest wrongdoing."

Campbell added that he "always complied with the letter and the spirit of the law. To suggest otherwise is unfounded and untrue. In addition, my voting record and opposition to a culture of taxpayer-funded bailouts has been and always will be unshakable."

Price said it was "truly a mystery" that his case was referred for further investigation.

"There being no evidence of any wrongdoing or any inconsistency in my policy position, one can only guess as to the motive behind their decision or even why they chose to initiate a review in the first place," he said. "My constant allegiance to a transparent and conscious divide between my official duties as a member of Congress and my actions as a candidate is without question."

Crowley's office said in a statement that he "has always complied with the letter and spirit of all rules regarding fundraising and standards of conduct."

All three lawmakers referred for further investigation had fundraisers last December, around the time of crucial House votes.

Price had two fundraisers, including a breakfast on Dec. 2 and a luncheon Dec. 10 billed as a financial services event. A special guest was Rep. Spencer Bachus of Alabama, the ranking Republican on the House Financial Services Committee.

Crowley had a cocktail reception Dec. 10.

Campbell had fundraisers Dec. 8 and Dec. 9.

Campbell and Price consistently opposed the regulation legislation. Crowley, after attending his fundraiser, returned to the House and voted against Democratic amendments aimed at toughening some financial regulations.

In each case he joined more than 100 Democrats, including fellow New Yorkers, to vote against the proposed changes.

What is going on with these Repsin the House?? First was Rangel, Maxine Waters...now this? Unbelievable!
11:59 PM on 09/01/2010
We have to end this! As Progressives we must make a stand. Any Politician whether Dem, Rep or Independent who voted for TARP DOES NOT GET A VOTE in November.

And Politician who took a single Dollar of Wall St/.Bank Lobbyist money get no votes in November.

We as Progressive must show the country, we will not comprimise!!! Our vote can not be bought.

And don't tell me "Oh but the Republicans will win". From what I can see the Chris Dodd, Obama/Giethner Demos have sold us out already - they have not earned our vote.

If we hold true to our values other drift less American will be attracted to what we say.

Tarp is the least of our problems.

It should be obvious—even for the trolls, what Roosevelt warned us against.

We have let our government to be stolen (without a shot being fired because of our stupidity) by special interests.

Benjamin Franklin

“Well, Doctor, what have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?”

Answer; “A Republic, if you can keep it.”

Today the question would be; “Well, Doctor, what have we got—a Republic or a Oligarchy?”

Answer; “A Oligarchy”

And Republicans are fighting tooth and nail to keep it a oligarchy.

It's like a French Revolution in reverse in which the workers come pouring down the street screaming more power to the aristocracy."”

Blaming this and that politician does no good. The blame lies ultimately on American citizens.

Federal Legislation needs to be past imposing a minimum/mandatory prison sentence of Five years in federal prison for any politician in congress or the senate convicted of bribery! This should at least slow down the corruption cause it's never going to stop!
11:13 PM on 09/01/2010
Corruption is not a problem in our government--it has become our system.

As our legalized corrupt bribery system exists today we are irrelevant.

You have to make bribery illegal first.

Then maybe what you are saying would make sense.

No such thing

Everything is bought.

Some of us watch Mozaic, Linc tv, fredom now etc. and Al Jazeera but many many of our citizens canot receive those broadcasts or are totally unaware of them.

Xenophobia is a huge problem in the United States. Our right wing teaches xenophobia by calling anyone who points out that another country have already solved the problem we are fighting about a traitor.

When we try to point out that some countries seem to be doing something better we are called unpatriotic, Love it or Leave It. How can we fight such stupidity?

The whole political system is built on open and obvious bribery. A politician just has to be careful to follow the practices that make the bribes legal.
08:18 PM on 09/01/2010
That ain't hard since Citizens United.

What is hard is to prove that outright bribery is illegal.

Just three, no more? Most of us assume that three is an optimistic prediction, if someone wanted to find just one honest man in our political culture. This just might ruin Holder's weekends.

You must have a degree in BS. If you can't convince them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit. Now you are lost in Latin America talking about libertarians. For your reference you use wikipedia, where anything can be posted true or untrueth. Our political science class is loving this. Copied all you commenmts.

I agree about Wikipedia, but it is not all BS. I gave that link because it does give references -for and against my opinion - instead of killing the messenger, try to disprove what I have posted.

I never go to Wikipedia without following the sources, I can tell from your posts you do not go to any effort to prove your bumper sticker talking points.

Your faith based ideology has been proven wrong by facts. Face up to it.

Faith based politics is the norm because thinking is hard. When Republicans still believe the biggest lie of all, that they are the party of small government, how can you expect to disabuse them of all the other lies they believe in?

If the facts are telling us something that is in conflict with our beliefs, perhaps you need to adjust your beliefs.

An intelligent citizen will, In other words, you see and read the logical explanation and since it does not align with what you believe, you tendency is to ignore what you have just read and learned in terms of actual facts and revert to creating your own “opinion”, which is usually not based in fact at all.

Curious? How come you did not also add to your reply that you will not face the facts no matter how many are put in front of you.

I hope you copy my above comment and give it to your class, but somehow I doubt it.

The will of the senate is the will of the special interests.

Until EVERYONE (including YOU Arianna) starts talking and blogging and marching for Campaign Reform we are spinning our wheels discussing anything that challenge the special interests.

Oil monopolies, Insurance monopolies, Wall Street, and the Banks if not in league, are aiding and abetting Bin Laden, who’s plainly stated goal is to bankrupt the United States like they did the Soviet Union.

David Graham Phillips wrote “Treason is a strong word, but not too strong, rather too weak, to characterize the situation in which the Senate is the eager, resourceful, indefatigable agent of interests as hostile to the American people as any invading army could be.”

Franklin D. Roosevelt wrote “ The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power."

"We The People" are supposed to be in power, but we have let it be stolen from us like Jefferson, Franklin, Eisenhower and many, many others warned.

This is not a partisan issue -- it is an American issue.

Are we going (possibly have already) lose our country without a fight for campaign reform?

Have all our wars been in vain?

Do we surrender to Fascism so easily?

I agree with you, but who exactly is going to take up this fight? Will our representatives in Congress ever vote on the one issue that is against there own best interest? Never.
10:40 PM on 09/01/2010
Fanned for being concerned and wanting to help.

If I don't, if you don't, we might as well fit our children out with serf rags.

Asking the question of who will fight is the same as asking who am I? Can you not as a citizen fight for your country as so many have before?

ONE CAUSE --ONE FIGHT--ONE AMERICA

Bipartisan Fair Elections Now Act Reaches Majority of Majority in US House Washington, DC—the House Fair Elections Now Act (H.R. 1826), championed by House Democratic Caucus Chairman John B. Larson (D-Conn.), gained its 134th co-sponsor, pushing the number of supporters to more than half of the Democratic Caucus (this is an old count-higher now).

This high level of support is a sign of the growing momentum for changing the way campaigns are financed in this country, according to Public Campaign and Common Cause.

Campaign reform is gaining momentum all the time because responsible citizens are not sitting on their a@@ but are fighting to change the status quo.

Whenever the American people have realized that our democracy is threatened, and voting and elections are no longer fair, we have always amended the Constitution to fix it. ... It has been done 27 times.

Are we citizens now any less than they were then? I say no-because of citizens who are willing to fight for our Republic.

This is the citizens country, left and right, if we are not willing to fight for it, we do not deserve it.

But please don't ask our children to give their lives while we can't even blog, march, write, or call to change.

Politicians are bought and sold.

It has to be US

The blame lies ENTIRELY on us
