First Posted: 8/31/10 04:19 PM ET Updated: 5/25/11 06:30 PM ET

The stars of 'Mad Men' cover the new special television issue of 'Rolling Stone,' available Wednesday on newsstands. Read the teaser from the story here.

"If Rob Lowe had been cast in the part, it would have been different," Jon Hamm told the magazine. "There was no backstory with me."

Elisabeth Moss was also virtually unknown before landing her role as Peggy Olsen.

"Matt always says that he basically hired a bunch of not-famous people, but people that had been working for a really long time," she said.

Here is the cover and a couple of photos, see the rest of the behind-the-scenes photos here.

Great cover.....just shouts out - Mad Men.

Mad Men is poorly written, it spews continually lackluster dialogue, and it struggles with one boring plotline after another. The show boasts quite the cast, but this only underscores how poorly the writers have done in utilizing the talent at their disposal. When it first came out I was intrigued, and subsequently watched several episodes, but it didn't take long to come to the realization that there is simply no "there" there. Short of the somewhat unique premise of the series, there is absolutely nothing about this show that warrants the attention it is getting. Are people really so shallow that they fall for this sophomoric, gimmicky drivel? When I heard that it was actually winning awards I couldn't even believe by ears. Mad Men is every bit as trite and pathetic as our modern movies and music. Style over substance, nothing more.

Ha! Are you kidding. The writing is fantastic. You seem to missing a lot of its irony. The show is brilliant on so many levels. Even little things like the symbolism of the color schemes relating to the dialogue, the use of mirrors and even the relevant reading material casually placed in the scenes.

You must be watching another show entirely, because MM has some of the best dialogue and plot lines I've ever heard. I wish Mr. Weiner wrote more for the movies, because there you have a qualified waste-land of so-called talent. I actually watch primarily old movies and selected sports on TV, but always save my Sunday nights for MM.

You are definitely wrong. It's the best show on TV. Probably the only one worth watching.
Perhaps the generational changes, the NYC specific back drop and the deeply psychological overtones and undertones are lost on you.

The show is brilliant. I hope it may pave the way for more better quality shows on TV, opposed to the utter junk that is now being produced.

Elizabeth Moss looks hot and sassy for a change, good for her!

But good grief, can we please be done with January Jones? She even looks vapid on the cover of the Rollling Stone! I used to think it was just her channeling her character, but I think there's honestly no there there (apologies to Dorothy Parker).

Elizabeth Moss was a virtual unknown before Mad Men? I guess everyone has forgotten about the West Wing.

I heart Don Draper.

Is a little diversity in some of these shows too much to ask? Do the leading characters ALWAYS have to be white? Though I guess since it's set in the 60's they can use the Jim Crow laws as an excuse.

Unfortunately, they had 50 layers of foundation garments! I can't believe my Mom dressed that way every day for a zillion years as a secretary. Her girdles could stand up in the corner!

Madmen: tart writing for sure. but waaaaaaaay too glossy. All the office people, even in the

early 60's weren't gorgeous hunks 'n broads.

it's like classical art we only want to see models of perfection and fantasy rather than the real thing. reality is too depressing ... oh , yeah, but the self-hatred ... hmmm

Have you even watched the show?! Whilst I appreciate that there are some exceptionally attractive characters, you seem to have missed out the rest of the cast. For example, Pete, Harry, Lane - certainly not Brad Pitt lookalikes. Peggy isn't all that either - not to mention Don's new secretary. Aside from the later, all core characters - none of them gorgeous.

I don't care if she IS the most homely of the female cast..I 'd get it on with Peggy Olson with no hesitation.

I love Mad Men. With all narcissistic, reality show, crap that's currently being showed down our throats, it's refreshing to see a smart, well written program like Mad Men.
