Apple Announcement Live Video
Apple's announcement is expected to include new iPod models and upgrades to Apple TV.

Didn't get an invite to Apple's September 1st music-themed event? You can still follow live!

Apple has announced that it will be offering a live video stream of its press conference, which begins at 10AM PT.

You'll be able to access the live video at Apple.com--but here's the catch: only users on Apple devices will be able to watch the live stream. Apple said in a press release, "Viewing requires either a Mac® running Safari® on Mac OS® X version 10.6 Snow Leopard®, an iPhone® or iPod touch® running iOS 3.0 or higher, or an iPad™."

Why the restrictions on who can watch? ReadWriteWeb explains why only Mac users can see the live video stream:

Apple will broadcast the event using its internally-developed HTTP Live Streaming Protocol, which requires either a Mac running Safari on Mac OS X version 10.6, an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or higher or an iPad.[...] The HTTP live streaming protocol is a feature of the latest version of Apple's multimedia player and framework, QuickTime X. The new protocol lets users stream audio and video over HTTP. This makes things easier for broadcasters, who can use a standard Web server instead of a special media server to stream in almost-real time.

Check if you can see the stream using this HTTP Live sample stream. MacRumors has a full list of the requirements, as well as information on workarounds so that you can access the video.

There are rumors that Apple may be unveiling new versions of the iPod Touch and iPod Nano, as well as updates to Apple TV. Read a rumor roundup here.

Wow. Big announcements today. Everything he's covered, including the new TV device, looks absolutely solid. The iPods are evolving, the iPod touch with Facetime is exactly what a lot of people could use and the iTV product is going to be a hit (I think). I'm kinda surprised at how big a leap this stuff is.

Jobs looks relatively healthy too.

I'm not a big iPod user, it is probably my least used function on iPhone and iPad, but these announcements are pretty cool.

So we who purchased the state-of-the-art Macs in 2005 are out in the cold.

Ha! You have to think of all computers, etc. as ongoing expenses, not capital investments. There are generally 2-3 generations in the pipeline at all times -- Apple or not.

Same with my iP4. Seems clear this protocol will be a means of streaming news and other content soon.

I think I remember seeing something like this in Halloween III...

Do we need to wear special masks?

Apple promoting itself? That is such a novel idea.

I love the smell of sarcasm in the morning.

"This makes things easier for broadcasters," but not for viewers given that Mac and Safari make up less than 4% of the PC population.

Not a real hurdle, if you have a computer capable of streaming the announcement live, then you also have what it takes to download Safari (it runs on both Mac and PC).

I would probably switch to Safari full time if I didn't need the developer tools that are on Firefox, Safari supports CSS3 and HTML5 which is next gen browser tech and is pretty peppy.

The announcement specifically says a mac running OSX. No mention is made of Safari on the PC, which from this I suspect means that the feature is missing from the PC version of Safari.

It's just apple being closed and proprietary (again). There have been open and accepted protocols for streaming for many years. But offer them as an alternative? No. That might mean that somebody but the fanboys would be the first to see the event.
