Iowa Hawkeyes offensive lineman Josh Koeppel will likely miss the season opener against Eastern Illinois after getting hit head-on by a truck while riding a moped.
The horrifying wreck occurred Monday morning, when a pickup truck slammed directly into the Hawkeye's motorcycle and knocked Koeppel into the air, head over heels and onto the ground. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said the lineman was released from the university clinic with "scrapes, bruises, significant soreness," according to the Gazette Online.
For Ferentz, the wreck realized a long-held fear. He has "been worried about" the mopeds "for 11 years," the Quad City Times reports. Speaking of the players who ride them, he added, "Very few of them wear helmets, and the other thing is they're just not very protected."
Iowa is ranked ninth in the nation in the season's first AP poll and tenth in the USA Today poll. Scroll down to watch a video of the scary crash.
