Josh Koeppel Moped Crash Accident Video

Iowa Hawkeyes offensive lineman Josh Koeppel will likely miss the season opener against Eastern Illinois after getting hit head-on by a truck while riding a moped.

The horrifying wreck occurred Monday morning, when a pickup truck slammed directly into the Hawkeye's motorcycle and knocked Koeppel into the air, head over heels and onto the ground. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said the lineman was released from the university clinic with "scrapes, bruises, significant soreness," according to the Gazette Online.

For Ferentz, the wreck realized a long-held fear. He has "been worried about" the mopeds "for 11 years," the Quad City Times reports. Speaking of the players who ride them, he added, "Very few of them wear helmets, and the other thing is they're just not very protected."

Iowa is ranked ninth in the nation in the season's first AP poll and tenth in the USA Today poll. Scroll down to watch a video of the scary crash.

I saw him on the news today. Glad he's ok. The old guy said the sun blinded him and he never saw him.

It's amazing that he was able to get up at all, let alone so fast. That was brutal. Hope he's okay.

Peeps turn left into riders all the time. Happened to me once when I was a new rider. Now I ALWAYS slow down in an intersection and NEVER assume the guy in the car sees me. Hasn't happened since.

It's amazing someone caught the accident on video. The old guy in the vehicle is in deep doo doo; he did not have the right of way.

I am a bicycle rider, and I always assume the car driver will do something careless.

I'm a motorcycle rider. We all need to ride like we are invisible, and never trust that the oncoming driver is always going to do the right thing.

what is this??

The number one cause of motorcycle fatalities (70%) is when a car takes a left-hand turn in front of the motorcyclist leaving him no place to go. The rider either hits the car or is forced into oncoming traffic.
The kid was very lucky.

People don't get up and walk around after horrifying crashes.

Yet another headline fail.

Thank you Doctor Quack. I know a guy feel fifteen feet, whacked his head, got up talked for about a couple of minutes, blood started coming from his ear, and dropped dead in front of us.
Thanks for your clinical diagnosis.

Oh, and by the way. Both this situation and that, were horrifying.

I never said he wasn't hurt, just that "horrifying" to me is an extreme term.

Do you think an EMT arrived on scene and said "Oh god, it was a horrifying accident."?

Just because a guy you know died doesn't mean the accident itself was horrifying, the outcome was horrifying but you can have horrifying results from non-horrifying accidents.

This is what I see as Horrifying (warning - graphic):

My clinical diagnosis? Does saying silly things out of self-righteous indignation make you feel good about yourself?

Wow, he is lucky. Glad he was not seriously injured. And FYI: it's a scooter, not a moped. A moped has pedals, hence the name.
02:25 PM on 09/05/2010
Because it has mo pedals than a scooter? :)
03:20 PM on 09/02/2010
Look at the video... it is early in the morning and the sun is shining from the direction the scooter is coming from. There is a very good chance that the driver did not see the scooter in the glare of the sun.

The MAJORITY of motorcycle/moped accidents occur when SOMEBODY TURNS LEFT and hits them.

An old statistic said that about 77% of motorcycle accidents occurred this way.
06:27 PM on 09/02/2010
and 80% of all motorcycle accidents involve 1st year riders
12:53 PM on 09/03/2010
100% of motorcycle accidents involve motorcycles.

Hard shells and Kevlar...the 2 wheelers are just not safe with the other cars on the road...gotta have the hard shells ( no leather helms...like some fools I have seen up here in WA...) and kevlar riding vests.

Armor...think Armor...

I ride my motorcycle everyday and have witnessed a few of these accidents. It's a very scary reality. I couldn't agree more about your post. I am wrapped head to toe in kevlar every time I go out for a ride. I go by the old saying," Dress for the crash, not for the ride."
