Obama, Mideast Leaders Kick Off Talks With Calls For Peace

Mideast Peace Talks

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip -- The top Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip rejected compromise with Israel in a fiery speech Wednesday, a day after gunmen killed four Israelis in a strong reminder that the Islamic militant group cannot be ignored in any Mideast deal.

President Barack Obama denounced the West Bank ambush as he launched a two-day summit marking the first Israeli-Palestinian negotiations in nearly two years.

"The message should go out to Hamas and everyone else who is taking credit for these heinous crimes that this is not going to stop us," he said after greeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.

The New York Times reports:

In remarks that followed, Mr. Netanyahu said that he "came here today to make peace," and "didn't come here to find excuses or make them." And he addressed Mr. Abbas directly, saying that they could not correct the failures of the past, but could work to improve the future.

Mr. Abbas then struck similar themes, calling on Israelis and Palestinians "to live as neighbors, partners" while calling for an independent Palestinian state. He said he thought it would be possible to achieve a settlement "within a year" despite a troubled history between the Israelis and the Palestinians, including what he described as "the historical injustices of 1948" and "the occupation that started in 1967."

Hamas has claimed responsibility for Tuesday's shootings, a vivid reminder that the Iranian-backed group may be locked out of the peace negotiations but remains a key player in determining their outcome.

Late Wednesday, gunmen wounded two Israelis in a drive-by shooting in the northern West Bank, the military said. Assailants in a car overtook an Israeli vehicle and opened fire, seriously wounding an Israeli man. The vehicle crashed, injuring a woman.

In a text message to reporters early Thursday, Hamas claimed responsibility.

The method resembled the fatal shooting on Tuesday in the southern part of the territory.

In an interview with AP Television News just before the Wednesday shooting, Gaza strongman Mahmoud Zahar indicated that more attacks could be expected. "Our resistance is continuous," he said. "We have to concentrate on the West Bank in order to achieve (its) liberation."

Earlier, in an address to Hamas members, Zahar said the movement would resist peace efforts and criticized the Palestinian president for joining the negotiations.

"Today marks the start of direct negotiations between someone who has no right to represent the Palestinian people and the brutal occupier, to provide a cover for Judaizing Jerusalem and stealing the land," Zahar said.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has been locked in a fierce rivalry with Hamas since the group seized Gaza from his forces in a violent takeover in 2007, leaving him only in control of the West Bank.

In a swift response to the shooting, Abbas' forces rounded up 250 low and midlevel Hamas supporters throughout the West Bank in what the group said was the largest sweep in recent memory. Hamas officials called the roundup arbitrary and an act of treason.

Abbas and Netanyahu are in Washington for a series of talks aimed at creating an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel within a year. Negotiations are to focus on core issues of the conflict, including the status of east Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want as capital of their future state but Israel also claims.

Chances for a deal appear slim, both because Abbas and Netanyahu are far apart on key issues, and because Hamas is increasingly entrenched in Gaza.

In the past year, some Hamas leaders have hinted that the group would accept the establishment of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem. The group also had a previous understanding with Abbas that he could negotiate on behalf of the Palestinians, provided he presents any deal to a referendum.

But the West has rejected Hamas feelers, insisting it first renounce violence and clearly recognize Israel's right to exist. Meanwhile, relations between Hamas and Abbas deteriorated as reconciliation efforts ran aground.

Hamas leaders have sharply criticized Abbas in recent days for agreeing to resume negotiations with Israel.

"The enemy of the Palestinian people is the Zionist enemy," Zahar said.

Zahar rejected the idea of compromise with Israel, saying that "liberating" all the land between the Mediterranean and the Jordan River – a reference to Israel's destruction – is a moral and religious duty. He said Palestinians must not abandon armed resistance against Israeli occupation.

The group – shunned by the West and Israel as a terror organization – possesses a large arsenal of rockets that it could launch at Israeli border towns. But Hamas has largely refrained from attacks since suffering heavy losses in an Israeli offensive early last year.

The main Mideast mediators – the United States, the United Nations, Europe and Russia – have not spelled out how Gaza fits into their peace plans. Abbas could only implement a peace deal if he either reaches a power-sharing deal with Hamas, or if Hamas decides to moderate. Both seem unlikely at this point.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak wrote in an op-ed piece in The New York Times on Tuesday that reconciliation between Hamas and Abbas' Fatah movement is "critical to achieving a two-state solution" and renewed an offer of Egyptian mediation.

Hamas expert Khaled Hroub said the group would keep acting as a spoiler if it is not accommodated.

"You have to engage with Hamas – not because you like or dislike them," Hroub said. "Because, pragmatically these are the people who can deliver."

In Tuesday's shooting, Palestinian gunmen opened fire on a car, killing the four Israeli settlers inside, including a pregnant woman, near the West Bank city of Hebron. Hundreds of people attended funerals for the victims on Wednesday, including a large ceremony at the settlement near Hebron where they lived.

The violence put new pressure on Netanyahu to resume construction in West Bank settlements when a freeze expires on Sept. 26. The Palestinians have threatened to walk out of negotiations if building resumes.

Netanyahu has not said what he will do.

On Wednesday, Yesha Council, which represents the settlers, symbolically restarted a handful of construction projects in the West Bank. Israeli police did not interfere, but it's not clear how much the settlers could realistically build.

Some 300,000 Israelis now live in West Bank settlements, along with nearly 200,000 others in east Jerusalem. The Palestinians claim both areas, captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war, for their future state.

What most people don't realize is there already is peace between Israel and the West Bank...for the most part. Both Israel and The West Bank are doing pretty well. And West Bank Palestinians seem to be warming up to working with Israelis to better their economy and lives...did any of you know this? Of course you don't. You don't read Hebrew, or read the right bloggers...just the nudnik liberal bloggers at Daily Kos and Haaretz...and Tikkun.

What you will learn about Israel will shock you. There is a phenomenon going viral in Israel called Flash Mobs. It is the most incredible thing I have ever seen. Israel is the most amazing place on Earth. I am going to go there and see it for myself.

I love Israelis and what they have accomplished. There are now a million young people who have been born in Israel - Sabras they are called. They are simply miraculous young people...so full of life and beauty and spirit. It beings me to tears...that we have a place where these beautiful young people can grow up and be safe and THRIVE!

God Bless Israel. I'll be coming Home to you in the not -to-distant Future. And God Bless The Friends of Israel everywhere. i thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Peace.

I hesitated before responding to you because I felt that I would be wasting my time, but here goes.
With all due respect, what world are you living in?
The West Bank Palestinians are doing pretty well? I recently got back from Bethlehem, the West Bank where I was visiting my family. The Palestinians there are living in a large prison surrounded by the so callled "Security Barrier or wall". The Israelis control the only exists and don't allow Palestinians to leave. They also control the power and water. I was there for two weeks, forced to sponge bath (no water) instead of showering before the Israelis released some water. Then you drive by a settlement and water is gushing out of the sprinkler system onto the street to "WATER THEIR GRASS!!". I guess the settlements' grass is more important that Palestinian babies getting their formula or bath!
So Please, go visit the West Bank before blindly believing biased blogs!

I hope it works out. By the way, if either side in this struggle unilaterally disarmed, which side do you think would suffer more bloodshed as a consequence?

Why are Israeli bombings that kill civilians not called heinous crimes by the President?

Like it or not, Israel will have to negotiate with Hamas, just as we have to negotiate with the Taliban.

Mark my words, if by the grace of God, a real and lasting peace comes from these latest negotiations, the Republicans will find a way to suck all the credit from this administration but if they fail, it will be COMPLETELY PRESIDENT OBAMA'S FAULT.

One State Solution.
They already have the parliamentary system in place.
They just need a constitution that guarantees minority rights, and write in that amending the constitution requires a super-majority large enough that nothing can pass without Jewish participation.
Israel would lose it's status of being controlled exclusively by Jewish people, but they gain a safe and secure homeland, which is a lot more than they have now.
12:37 PM on 09/02/2010
Bravo, anyone that doesnt see this as the only solution clings to segregation which will only produce years of more violence. Israel/Palestine could be a model for the world, but their are many zionists here that oppose the palestinians should ever live side by side the israelis for whatever racial reasons. The massive gas reserves off Gaza coupled with the business skills of the Israelis could produce a supernation that could bridge the divide of Islam/Judaism which are one, now the people need to be one

Except that no one wants that solution. Not the Israelis, not the Palestians. And each party has the right to self-determination.
08:33 AM on 09/03/2010
The Jews people, like any other people, has the right of self determination and wants to have its own national state, alongside a national Palestinian state. It does not wand to be a minority in an Arab state. We saw how well it worked for the 1,000,000 ethnically cleansed Jews who lived there in the past.

The "one state solution" is an antisemitic mean to deny Jews from their nation and eventually either subject them or eliminate them.

This could work or it could not. Whatever the outcome it's become clear that a republican couldn't negotiate a lunch order on the world stage let alone a peace agreement.

People have to understand that Hamas has a simple proposal which anyone that wants to see this conflict end has to come to terms with, the millions of palestinain refugees deserve the right of return to Israel and full citizenship. The mainstream rarely talks about this but this is a fundamental aspect of any peace talks, how can you forget the people that Israel has violently thrown of their homeland? They are just as important as the Israeli's that want security, these people want their home to live on just as like any human being and until Obama pressures Israel to accept this, there wont be peace. You cant negotitate and leave millions of refugees of the table, the current land of Israel is their home and they deserve citizenship. Bibi and Israel recognize this and people around the world might believe you desire peace not occupationa and oppression

They can, they might, and it will be fruitless if they do.
One state, many people, would work. It's not that hard.

Israel is quite serious even if you refuse to recognize it. They were at that negotiating table waiting for Abbas to make up his mind for quite a while.

Some people think that the EU, being a postnational entity itself, doesn’t take kindly to Zionism. World citizens like the Baroness Ashton think that nation-states based on ethnicity or even religion — although Zionism is not essentially a religious concept, clearly Judaism has something to do with it — are passé and dangerous. Nationalism, they would say, is the main cause of war.

They are wrong. These days, the most dangerous ideology is a universalist and anti-nationalist one: radical Islam.

But note that the proposed state of ‘Palestine’ is a nation-state based on ethnicity with an established religion.

Also, I thought I’d mention that in a world without nation-states there wouldn’t be any baronesses.

For all those cynics and doubting Thomases... remember the diplomatic feat of Jimmy Carter brokering peace between Egypt and Isr@el. Also Clinton came within a hair's breadth w of doing the same with Arafat and Rabin.
It has happened before, it can again. Obama is the right man to get it done.

Thank you! This site is a nest of cynics, double-standard screeds and "doubting Thomases".
But if Obama can negate extremist, expansionist right-wing settlers in Israel and creepy, Iranian-sponsored Hamas, which wants nothing less than the destruction of Israel, he will be a hero.

The solution will lie in building on the honest broker peace accords Pres Clinton began in 2000, and a strong U.S./international presence guaranteeing the peace and punishing those who break it. I still think it can be done. Ignore the extremists and do the right thing, for the common good and with fairness to all sides.

Kind of reminds me of what should be done in the U.S,

Yeah, like he got "Health Care" done, mandatory insurance, no public option, no single payer, no Medicare buy in - just a boost to the people who were already scr*wing the American people. I have faith Obama can get something done, just not anything meaningful.

More of the same - Enter Bibi, Barry and Abu Mazan.
Barry: You two will pretend to make peace now - don't worry it won't happen, we've paid Hamas to create a bit of trouble...
Bibi: Do I have to utter the words 'Palestinian State again, can't I bring up Holocaust guilt and Iran a few times?
Abu: I'll just keep talking about '48 and the Nakba.
Barry: Both of you just do as we say and trust that we have the master plan...
