Texas Student Knits Her Way Through School

Since she is right-handed, Snowden Becker found it difficult at first to learn how to knit from her left-handed mother. Becker, who has been knitting since she was 9 years old, eventually learned the craft from a yarn shop teacher named Marie, owner of Marie's Wild & Wooly in the small town of Shelton, Wash.

Sponsored by a small wool business in Reno, Becker won an $800 knitting scholarship in May from local yarn store Jimmy Beans Wool and Vogue Knitting, an international knitting magazine. The scholarship is the first of its kind, and applicants were screened based on their GPA, an essay and previous work.
