Mark Kirk Increasingly Brings Up Greek Financial Crisis To Criticize His Greek Opponent Alexi Giannoulias

First Posted: 09/02/10 02:09 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:30 PM ET

In recent months, Mark Kirk, the Republican U.S. Senate candidate from Illinois, has increasingly been bringing up the financial crisis in Greece as a warning of what could happen if America doesn't reduce its own government spending. The undertones of these comments, however, seem to be directed at raising questions about the ancestry of his Democratic opponent, Alexi Giannoulias, who is the child of Greek immigrants and has been painted as a "mobster" by Republicans during this campaign season.

Here are some examples of Kirk bringing up Greece's financial situation:

- "I'm particularly concerned about the role of U.S. financial institutions -- particularly Goldman-Sachs. That as Greece got on the heroin of borrowed money, Goldman was the crack dealer. And did not disclose these increasing liabilities to the E.U. financial system, to the IMF, or to the Fed. Now Papandreou asked you for money, and backing." [House Committee on Appropriations, Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government Holds a Hearing on Treasury Budget, 3/10/10]

- "Too often, the Congress focuses on problems of the past, not dangers to come. Last month, the Greek Government lost its AAA credit rating. On May 19, Greece will have to pay $10 billion in loans that it does not have the money to cover. The market will only lend now at a 24 percent interest rate. Estimates are that an IMF Greek bailout will cost $100 billion. On Monday, Portugal lost its AAA rating, and this news triggered a sudden loss in our own stock market. Yesterday, Spain lost its credit rating, and the Spanish problem is five times the size of the Greek problem. Italy and Ireland may be next. We may soon face a sovereign debt crisis." [House Session, 4/29/10]

- "In order to prevent a Greek tragedy right here in the U.S., we should take quick action on the emerging sovereign debt crisis and reduce government spending here at home." [Congressman Kirk press release, 5/4/10]

- "That's why I think we are approaching some real danger here over the long run here, and why we need fiscal conservatives in Springfield, where debt levels are approaching Greek levels, and in Washington." [City Club, 5/10/10]

- "Everybody has seen what's happened in the country of Greece lately? A culture where they relied on future taxpayers to build so many benefits that on May 19th, the country couldn't pay a $10 million debt. Or $10 billion debt. And led to this Euro collapse that's going on." [Jil Tracey Breakfast, 5/17/10]

- "We've seen countries like Greece, Spain, Italy and Portugal now facing a serious economic crisis because of irresponsible fiscal policies. In my view we should make tough choices now, to protect American citizens from the type of economic future that many Europeans face." [Metropolitan Planning Council, 6/21/10]

- "Greek, right here, followed by the Portuguese, are suffering from a catastrophic decline in market confidence. And this has ended their ability to control their own economic future. ... I think that we need to learn from the Greek economy's collapse. Higher spending, borrowing and taxes lead to stagnation or worse." [Chamber Lunch, 7/12/10]

- "Did anyone see what's happening in the country of Greece, where they are now collapsing because they built a government way too expensive that they can't afford. For me, I represent a whole different way of moving forward." [Olney campaign event, 7/31/10]

Kirk has also made a point, when talking about his military service, of talking about Giannoulias "playing basketball in Greece" -- a reference to Giannoulias playing professional basketball abroad before being elected as Illinois state treasurer. For example, a May 30 Kirk for Senate press release read, "While Mark Kirk was running intelligence support for electronic attack combat missions in Operation Allied Force (Kosovo), Alexi Giannoulias was playing basketball in Greece. In brief, while Mark Kirk wore a U.S. Navy uniform, Alexi Giannoulias wore a basketball uniform in Greece."

These coincidences haven't gone unnoticed by the press. On July 12, NBC Chicago's Ward Room wrote, "In several media appearances and press releases, Kirk has made a point of mentioning Greece as a poor fiscal example. While sound criticism, the Kirk camp surely enjoys the convenient fact that Kirk's competitor, Alexi Giannoulias, is of Greek descent." American Enterprise Institute Visiting Fellow Marc Thiessen wrote in a July 12 Washington Post op-ed, "Kirk recently warned that Illinois is rapidly falling into the same financial situation as Greece (his opponent is, conveniently, of Greek descent)."

There have also been ads playing up ethnic stereotypes and portraying Giannoulias as a mobster. The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) put out an ad in February saying -- in a stereotypically ethnic Italian accent -- Giannoulias would "make Tony Soprano proud" and calling him a "wise guy." The NRSC released a similar ad in August, saying, "Al Capone would be impressed" and showing a generic picture of an Italian-looking family sitting around a table with a red-checkered cover.

The Huffington Post reached out to the Kirk campaign for comment, but no one responded.

Giannoulias campaign spokesman David Spielfogel replied, "These types of baseless and offensive attacks have become classic Congressman Kirk. He and his Republican pals thrive on smears that try to cast opponents as un-American and seem to think that if your parents didn't come over on the Mayflower, you're not a U.S. citizen. They can attack the President, they can attack Alexi, they can even attack their fellow Americans, but at the end of the day it's undeniable that our nation is so great because of our ethnic, religious and cultural diversity, not in spite of it."

I guess the 'Tony Soprano' connection is because ????? Well NRSC needs to get a map. Although I guess it doesn't matter. Not white enough and they eat a lot of olive oil so really, there is no difference between Greece and Italy and all those olive oil people are gangsters anyway. And all Italians are part of the mob and Greeks too. Also. The immense, amazing stupidity is well, not so amazing any more. And why does everyone have to serve in the military or otherwise they don't count? Sad, sadder and saddest.

For those of you who are having trouble keeping track of Mark Kirk's lies, here's a list (so far):

As of about a week ago, the list was up to twelve separate incidents: Kirk (1) falsely claimed he served "in" Operation Iraqi Freedom; (2) falsely claimed to "command the war room in the Pentagon"; (3) falsely claimed to have won the U.S. Navy's Intelligence Officer of the Year award; (4) falsely claimed to have been shot at by the Iraqi Air Defense network; (5) falsely claimed to be a veteran of Desert Storm; (6) falsely claimed to be the only lawmaker to serve during Operation Iraqi Freedom; and (7) falsely claimed to have been shot at in Kosovo; and (8) falsely claimed to have been shot at in Kandahar. (9)the deployment debunking, in which Kirk repeatedly claims his annual training missions are deployments. The Navy begs to differ. (10), we now have confirmation from the DOD that Kirk had violated Pentagon policy by conducting partisan political activity while on active duty, which Kirk has strenuously denied, even to the point of claiming that the Obama administration altered his record. (11) the nursery school where he didn't teach. (12) and where he didn't have students bringing guns to class.

And now we can add #13 to Kirk's long list of lies.

Mark Kirk - LIAR, LIAR, PANTS ON FIRE!

Kirk's lies prove he is not worthy of being a Congressman
and should never become a Senator. In fact, he didn't have the integrity to
drop out of this campaign. Kirk likes to lie and has no regrets. Why should he when
he has always been elected because of his lies? The man is an empty shell.

The RNC is still backing Kirk the Liar while the RNC
is demanding another Republican Liar running for Office in Colorado drop out of his
campaign. What is the difference between these two Republican Liars?
Kirk is a successful Corporation RNC Liar. Kirk has been a supporter of
Wall St. and corporations. He has never been there for the people of Illinois.
Kirk is the perfect Republican. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I was shocked to realize after reading Turtleposer's comment about Kirk belonging to UCC. As a lifelong proud member of UCC and extremely proud to include Obama as part of our denomination, I hadn't realized that Kirk was part of UCC also. Liberal Obama and Sometime Conservative Kirk were part of the same denomination, hmmm, since they say that Obama's minister was such an influence on him, I wonder if the Repubs checked the sermons given by Kirks minister before they allowed him to run. Do you think they know he is part of a denomination that allows women and gays to be ministers? Being part of my denomination is still not enough for this Bleeding Heart Liberal from Chicago to vote for a Republican to represent me in Washington.

He really has a thing against the Greeks, eh? If I were Greek, I would be all over this, here in Chicago. Heck, I'm not even Greek & this is plain prejudice & ticks me off!! Where's the public's outcry?? Any Greeks out there? Come on!!
12:53 AM on 09/03/2010
Well I'M full-bore Greek, and I was & still am DISGUSTED with the way Greeks have responded to the financial crisis that resulted from decades of mind-blowing entitlements & handouts.

I honestly thought there would be SOME degree of introspection...some, "gee, maybe it's not OK to have the government directly hire & employ thousands of artists & sculptors...give them 8-12 weeks of paid vacation a year & then retire at 50 (or maybe 53) with a pension that equals their annual salary".

But NOOO...they friggen riot for weeks like tens of thousands of Paris Hilton's who've had their credit cards cut up & forced to live within their means.

It's truly shameful, and it is a PERFECT example of what can happen when governments cave to unions & civil workers that they've coddled for decades.

This analogy NAILS why Illinois & California are on the brink of disaster, and as others have pointed out, it's not just Kirk; the freakin New York Times made the same analogy.

I accidentally marked you as fav. Sorry, some of your stuff is correct but to not understand that a very large bank (of ours) helped Greece hide their debt so that they could join the EU -----then use that knowledge to sink them later is a sad comment on all the shenanigans going on in money and banking. Same in IL. Secrets on this scale will cause trouble and mega banks are evil, cold blooded sharks.

Did you even read the article, poomplet? What does the financial problems of GREECE have to do with Alexi Giannoulias here in Chicago? Or the race for our Senate seat to represent Illinois? NOTHING. We have enough problems right here in the U.S., thank you very much, that Kirk doesn't need to go using the problems in Greece as doublespeak to link to his opponent's ethnic heritage. What, did he get a hold of some bad Spanakopita? Get a bad grade in Greek Philosophy? Kirk has LIED repeatedly on his website and in public about his past work experiences and military service. Why doesn't he talk about that instead?

Mark Kirk obviously has ties to the mob because his ex-wife Kimberly Vertolli has an Italian last name. He probably divorced her to distance himself from the Gambino family or the Capones or the Corleones - you name it! His ex-wife is also genetically capable of making fantastic marinara sauce.

Also "Kirk" is an Anglo-Scottish last name, so I'm sure there's a video of Mark Kirk wearing a kilt out there somewhere. Who knows if he wears anything underneath the kilt? Also, he's a member of the United Church of Christ which few people know about unless they're members of UCC. That, in itself, is a huge red flag.

And if Bush wasn't elected.... You have the Chris Matthews disease, a person who will only comment on the Democrats negatives, and loves any opportunity to praise Palin. Chris Matthews admitted he voted for Michael Steele, this shows Chris has no credibility of speaking about politician, what could he possible see in Steele to vote for him? He really need to explain this vote.

How low can Kirk go? His use of ethnic stereotypes to smear Alexi Giannoulias aims to distract us from Kirk's not-so-moderate voting record against Wall Street Reform, health care reform, expanding campaign finance disclosures, extending unemployment insurance.
