Border's loss is widening and Barnes and Nobles has put itself up for sale. O' misery me! What will we do? I like the peace and quiet of a book store. We need a place to sit and contemplate. You can't even think let alone read at Starbucks because they play the music too loud. Whatever happened to the idea of the cafe as a place where one could sit and pen an essay? You think Ernest Hemingway could have written "A Moveable Feast" at any place but Les Deux Maggots? Not with all the noisy barristas and anorexic females chatting on the cell phone. Bibliophiles used to complain that Borders and Barnes and Nobles were ruining the neighbourhood book store, but the neighbourhood book store has long been closed. If these two retailers go out-of-business we will truly become even more isolated as everyone withdraws into their iPhones and headsets trying to drown out the confusion that surrounds them.

Books stores are to become the next music store dying a slow long death. With books going electronic there is no need for stores the size of warehouses that only act as - well, a library. Often I see customers (such as myself) go in and spend hours on end reading, using the free WiFi and sipping coffee in the cafe.
