North Coast Music Festival Challenges Pitchfork, Lolla For Fest Supremacy

This Weekend: North Coast Music Fest Brings Rap, Electronica, Jam Bands

The window of opportunity for outdoor concerts in Chicago is closing quickly. But this weekend, one festival plans on sending summer out with a bang.

The North Coast Music Festival is barging on to the Chicago music-fest scene with three days of impressive line-ups, stacked with rappers, jam bands, and electronica DJs. Billing itself as "summer's last stand," the festival will run from Friday to Sunday at Union Park, the site of the Pitchfork Music Fest two months earlier.

Local talent is represented amply, and admirably, on the North Coast line-up. Big names from the Chicago music scene include Lupe Fiasco, the rapper known for hits like "Kick, Push" and "Superstar," and Umphrey's McGee, heir to the improvisatory jam-band aesthetic pioneered by Phish.

Also featured at the festival will be British electronic duo The Chemical Brothers; rap legend Nas, performing with Damian Marley; trance-fusion act The Disco Biscuts; plus Moby, De La Soul, Holy Ghost!, and many others.

Three-day passes are sold out; individual day passes cost $40.
