Ben Roethlisberger Suspension Reduced To 4 Games

Ben Roethlisberger Suspension Reduced

(AP) NEW YORK — Ben Roethlisberger's suspension has been reduced from six games to four by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. The Pittsburgh Steelers' star quarterback met with Goodell early Friday and was told he could return on Oct. 17 against Cleveland.

Roethlisberger was suspended in April for violating the league's personal conduct policy, but Goodell said at the time he would review Roethlisberger's behavior over the next few months. Goodell was satisfied that the player has followed the league's guidelines and stayed out of trouble.

Roethlisberger was accused of sexually assaulting a Georgia college student following a night of drinking in a Milledgeville, Ga., bar on March 5. He was not charged by Georgia authorities.

The league said the "reinstatement is contingent on Roethlisberger continuing to adhere to the program established by our advisors and avoiding any further violations of the personal conduct policy."

Quick Poll

Is the NFL letting Ben Roethlisberger off easy?

Yes -- he is a two-time accused sex offender.

No -- he has never been found guilty of a crime.

"You have told me and the Steelers that you are committed to making better decisions," Goodell said in a letter to Roethlisberger. "Your actions over the past several months have been consistent with that promise and you must continue to honor that commitment."

Roethlisberger is the first player suspended by Goodell under the NFL's personal conduct policy who was not arrested, charged with or convicted of a crime. However, Goodell said in April the policy allows him to impose such a penalty when the league's integrity and reputation are at stake.

Roethlisberger's representatives at one point wanted the suspension cut in half, to three games, but Goodell stipulated in April it would be a six-game ban that could only be reduced to four games.

Steelers president Art Rooney accompanied Roethlisberger on his trip to see Goodell. Rooney and his organization kept in frequent contact with Goodell throughout the four-month process, during which Roethlisberger underwent extensive evaluations.

Indeed, Goodell's ruling was made in consultation with Rooney and the Steelers, who were angered by the two-time Super Bowl winner's behavior and would have punished him if the league hadn't.

Roethlisberger and Goodell met last month at the team's training camp in Latrobe, Pa. At that time, Goodell said he was encouraged by the progress Roethlisberger was making and promised to make his decision on the term of the suspension before the regular season began.

Goodell kept his word Friday.

The Steelers re-signed Byron Leftwich and planned to start him in Roethlisberger's absence. But Leftwich hurt his left knee in Thursday night's exhibition finale against Carolina. Depending on the extent of the injury, Pittsburgh could be down to Dennis Dixon and veteran Charlie Batch while Roethlisberger is suspended, and would certainly need to add another QB.

While he is out, Roethlisberger plans to work with a California-based quarterbacks coach, George Whitfield, and he'll throw to some free-agent receivers who are looking for work in the league.

Roethlisberger also is being sued in Nevada by a woman who says he sexually assaulted her there in 2008. No charges were brought in that case, and it did not figure in the NFL's suspension.

Doesn't take a genius to further read about the incident and know that she didn't press charges because she didn't want the media or threatening fans on her case. No charges doesn't mean a crime was not committed, it just means another person was too intimidated to speak up.
03:05 PM on 09/14/2010
No it doesn't. Did she tell you herself that's why? And besides... she's getting WAY more crap tossed her way because she DIDNT press charges. This is 2010... ain't no woman afraid or intimidated enough not to press charges.

The poll results slay me. Four games (reduced from six) for an un-charged, not arrested, not convicted player? Am I missing something?
03:06 PM on 09/14/2010
the punishment was for his actions in general. not any specific incident. more as a deterrent i'd say.

This is one of those agree to disagree topics. Some are using their dislike for steelers to make judgment, some are saying what if were there daughter (but never think that their daughter should not put themselves in certain situations either, esp with wearing a button inviting said behavior), some are playing the race card. At the end of the day, it is what it is. Shaun Rogers took a gun through aiport serurity, proven, no doubt, got 1 game. So we can go around forever on this. It is over, 4 games, let's move on. You can't keep changing based off biases. The policy is he violated personal conduct, ok, that comes with suspension...he got 4 games. Anything else is going outside of what the policy is. Are we going to have a poll every month on this?

The lesson is to be rich and famous enough to hire cops as your security, so when you get underage girls drunk, you can literally get away with rape and the cops will even help cover up your crime. Big Rot is such an inspiration to the young athletes of America.

hmm... getting underage girls drunk. he drove her there? he forced them down her throat? BS... you wanna blame someone for getting her drunk... charge the bartenders. they are providing her her drinks.

If you commit the crime, you do the time.... Unfortunately, nobody told Roger Goddell that there was no crime, therefore there should be no time.

Being guilty of being dumb and making dumb decisions in life is not a crime, if it were ... half this country would be locked up.

Goddell isn't sending him to prison...there doesn't have to be a crime for the employer to levy a punishment. In fact, were it not for the NRL levying some sort of punishment most of these guys would walk away from their activities absolutely free. Just because the player can pay off a victim or "convince" the cops not to press charges, doesn't mean they did nothing wrong. If it was you or me, there would have been charges filed. We would be left to clear our name in court. So, a suspension by the employer for violating their conduct policy si the least that can happen.

Oh, and for the record, I'm a Steelers fan. But fair is fair.

He's a young guy who likes partying and girls. Because he's rich he also has a target painted on his back. He was not charged with any crime. If the guy was a plumber would his boss have made him take a month off with no pay ??? If he did he would get sued.

so true. check out college town bars on any given weekend. guys hitting on girls is not new people.

He didn't break any laws though... this is an unprecendented suspension and I think we all knew it would be reduced to 4 games.

He should have been on Minute To Win It with Berrian and Shiancoe and Pierre Thomas this week. Might have helped him repair his image or show that he's doing something nice for charity. 8PM on NBC tomorrow and wednesday.

Oh, and this the NFL suspended him therefore he must have raped her logic is nonsense.

He was suspended for the same reason Shirley Sherrod was fired...to satiate a kneejerk media and public.

Anything else you want to read into the NFL's decision to suspend him is nullified by their decision to do nothing with Eric Foster.

I don't think that is what Goodall is saying at all. Yes, there were no criminal charges, but The NFL holds a higher standard for their football players. Basically Goodall is just telling Ben to clean up his act. If you haven't noticed there seems to be a reoccuring pattern here with Ben and The NFL wants it to stop.

Not just Ben...every weekend, off season there is someone. And probably if you looked at any company of that size, you would be surprised of the employees that get DUI's (I know we do at my workplace) and other trouble "off the clock." The NFL is no different...they are people.

His punishment wasn't severe enough. What are the odds that he will continue in his perverted ways? His athletic ability should not have precedence over his lack of morals.

I'm sure in my person opinion the guy did it, but since the law decided it couldnt prosecute, what can you do?

They gave him six, and in appeal its 4 on good behavior under the new guidelines.. Its not exactly a slap on the wrist, but until the civil courts get on the ball, there's not much to do about it if there are no charges.

For those that think the two women were "making stuff up" and there is no proof Reothlisberger is a serial rapist that got a break like a 1950ies segregationist that killed someone trying to vote, just follow the victim's interview here: http://nicepickcowher.com/2010/06/09/roethlisbergers-rape-victim-speaks/

I saw it. Sounds like a woman regretting a drunken night of random intercourse with a guy she doesn't know.

She couldn't say what position the alleged rapist had her in? She couldn't say how he gained access to her private area?

No wonder the DA couldn't charge him with anything.

We know what happened...

She thought she was going to be Mrs. Roethlisberger or at the very least get to enjoy his lifestyle for awhile...instead she got TWO MINUTES in a bathroom. She's hurt and the second she leaves, her jealous girlfriends insist that since she was with the worlds most famous "rapist" that she was obviously raped and she drunkingly went along.

Now, it's her career.
