Anti-Muslim Acts In Five States Being Investigated By Department Of Justice

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department is investigating a handful of apparently anti-Muslim incidents in four states, including the stabbing of a Muslim cab driver in New York City.

FBI agents and civil rights division investigators also are looking into vandalism and other incidents at mosques or mosque construction sites in Arlington, Texas; Murfreesboro, Tenn.; Madera, Calif.; and Waterport, N.Y.

The open criminal investigations were confirmed by civil rights division spokeswoman Xochitl (SOH-chee) Hinojosa in response to a query from The Associated Press.

The suspected anti-Muslim incidents, following the uproar over a planned mosque near ground zero in New York and Saturday's planned burning of copies of the Quran at a church in Gainesville, Fla., were the topics of a meeting Tuesday between Attorney General Eric Holder and Muslim and other religious leaders.

Holder called the planned Quran burning, to coincide with the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, "idiotic and dangerous," the religious leaders said following the private meeting.

A Justice Department official who was present confirmed Holder said that the plan by the Rev. Terry Jones to burn copies of the Quran at his church was idiotic. But the official, who requested anonymity because the meeting was private, said Holder was quoting Gen. David Petraeus, the U.S. commander in Afghanistan, when he used the word "dangerous." Petraeus said the book burning could endanger U.S. troops.

Justice spokesman Matthew Miller said afterward that Holder "reiterated the department's strong commitment to prosecuting hate crimes, and noted several successes."

In the past 18 months, the department "has prosecuted three men who burned a mosque in Tennessee, two others who burned an African-American church in Massachusetts and another who spray-painted threats on a synagogue in Alabama, among other cases," Miller said. "Violence against individuals or institutions based on religious bias is intolerable and the department will bring anyone who commits such crimes to justice."

The religious leaders had sought a forceful public statement from Holder condemning hate crimes, and suggested he speak out before the Sept. 11 anniversary. They also want an order for his community relations service to try to defuse tensions over Jones' plans.

The White House and State Department also said Tuesday that the desecration of the Quran could endanger U.S. troops and civilians abroad. But Jones said he still intends to go ahead.

The incidents have followed sustained criticism of the planned mosque near the former site of the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. Early plans for the project known as Park51 call for a 500-seat auditorium, a Sept. 11 memorial and prayer space.

Among the incidents under investigation as potential hate crimes, all dating from July and August:

_ A Muslim cab driver in New York City had his face and throat slashed in a suspected hate crime. Michael Enright of Brewster, N.Y., has been indicted on state hate-crime charges in the attack and could also face assault and attempted murder charges.

_ Arson at the site of a future mosque in Murfreesboro, where leaders of the local Islamic Center won permission in the spring to build a new mosque after outgrowing their rented space.

_ A brick nearly smashed a window at the Madera Islamic Center in central California, where signs were left behind that read, "Wake up America, the enemy is here," and "No temple for the god of terrorism."

_ A fire and graffiti at the Dar El-Eman Islamic Center in Arlington, Texas.

_ Police arrested five teenagers after the son of one of the founders of a mosque in Waterport, N.Y., on Lake Ontario was sideswiped by a sport utility vehicle. One teen was charged with firing a shotgun in the air near the mosque a few days earlier.

America wants to fashion itself as a country that 'polices' the world and leaders of the free world.  What a joke.  This reflects badly on all of us.  While I understand that FREEDOM to do things is important in this country...So is freedom from persecution and that is exactly what this is.  SHAME ON THESE PEOPLE.

What kind of mentality is this?  Do we want to endanger our troops?  Do we want to antagonize the people that brought the hate and devastation to us on 911?   Show the world how ugly Americans can be?  You get back what you put out and this is asking for a lot more hate and destruction.  Crackpots like this get on the news and even though acts of hatred like this are NOT representative of all Americans that is what the world will see and we will be judged and very possibly rightly so.  I, for one and ashamed and embarrassed and even a little depressed about this.  UGLY.

Eventually the country as a whole (even if not the specific individuals involved) has a "what were we thinking" moment. Look at how the Know Nothings are received historically now. So long term (50-100 yrs), I'm hopeful.

yet Jews and Christians are victims of hate crimes in larger numbers yet when they express their freedom of religion its called intolerance or never warrant an article on liberal blogs to denounce it or 'bring attention to it'

well, me for one, in a verbal sense. as someone without a faith i abhor the amount of influence a make believe sky figure has in our system of law and government. i attack the christian ideology and policies born of it that target anyone who doesn't live by their creeds all the time and almost never hear a word said against me for it.

but when i express the same feelings about an even more strict and fundamentalist religion from the desert with far more recent and numerous human rights violations, i'm an awful racist.

Have you ever heard of Patterson, New Jersey? It is a dangerous city with Muslim sections that any right minded Christian would not decide to take a stroll through. Come on, there are people of all religions who are hateful and dangerous. Christians are not excluded from hate crimes or hate talk.

Attacking a person is unquestionably a crime.

Burning a building without a permit is called arson--- and it too is a crime.

Burning a book---any book---

NOT A CRIME.

Maybe not a good idea, maybe something certain groups find insulting, maybe something this individual finds reprehensible and a symbol of the repression of knowledge, but simply not on par with assault and arson. Not even on par with yelling " 'fire' in a crowded theater".

Hear this loud and clear: In AMERICA, burning a book--ANY book--- is NOT A CRIME.

Neither is depicting the Prophet Mohammed, nor typing his name. Nor burning him in effigy. Nor insulting him in a TV cartoon. Nor questioning the practices of Muslims, the wisdom of their leaders, or the validity and relevance of their holy texts.

My mother used to say "if you spread your feeling out like a carpet then don't cry when people walk on them".

And certainly don't expect free people to come to your rescue.

The intentional act of threat of terrorism against a group of people IS a crime . . . a hate crime. For instance, it is a crime to burn a cross that is placed to present a threat of further violence against a person of a minority group.
10:51 AM on 09/08/2010
GinnyW, the burning of crosses and placement of nooses, both instruments of death and torture, by groups which are known to have been regularly engaged in violent acts against individuals and acts which violated individuals civil rights , has been determined (in most instances but not all) to constitute threat. A threat of violence. In most cases, a direct threat, toward certain individuals who have acted in a manner at odds with the cross-burners and noose-displayers.

And, when those cross burnings and/or noose burnings occur on private property which the burners have no legal access, it's also trespassing and vandalism.

If those displays of hate and threats of violence occur on public property, that's an additional offense.

Burning Korans on ones' own property, with an open burn permit, might be insulting to some and reprehensible to others, but it is in no way an "act of threat of terrorism".

Now, for those who "promise" violence will follow if the Koran burning is allowed to continue...I can't say.

Some of those people may well be guilty of a crime.

My son speaks Arabic among his many languages, and when he was in the Marines during the 90's, he quickly learned to slip the fact that he was Jewish into the conversations with our allies, so he wouldn't be included in the picture of the Ugly American. In Egypt and even Saudi Arabia, it was better to be Jewish than Christian, and his ears burned when he was at cafes at the truthful statements about American intolerance and aggression, especially when following commentary declared that the US didn't used to be like that! His older sister is a Moslem (Sunni) and taught him Arabic when he was a little kid, and aided him in the translations of foodstuff donated to Somalis, because he didn't keep kosher, but she strictly follows halal dietary laws, which are the same commandments from Moses, so that marshmallows are tabboo, since they are made from gelatin from cow's hooves and powdered sugar, but Lucky Charms are okay, because the cows are slaughtered by kosher butchers and have the little kosher symbol on the package.

One could make the argument that by willfully putting American troops at risk of further violence, it is an act of treason - although that itself is a fine line.

Muslims need to learn tolerance. In fact burning of Qurans actually helps employ those who produce them. If some Muslim takes the bait and commits an actual act of violence, he should be prosecuted.

If atheists tomorrow wanted to burn bibles there would be an outcry from the churches and fox news.
09:02 AM on 09/08/2010
Yet you would allow Americans to die as a direct result? Did you forget what happened on 9/11 suicide bombers and hijackers are not prosecuted. I am guessing you do not have family in the military that are actually fighting in theater right now. I personally don't want to see a bunch of US Troops being killed overseas b/c of some stupid pastor in FL. I think if he does burn the Koran he should be persecuted for committing a hate crime and all others who participate in such acts as well. For a religion like Christianity to say, "love thy enemy" and have representatives of that faith be hypocrites, it's disgusting. there is definitely a way to teach tolerance not hate and it would have to come from the Islamic community not Christian extremist who feel they have to. Mixing politics and religion is never good.

If the burning of the Koran does actually happen, and is not just a very ill-concieved publicity stunt, of worse, another attempt to scare and divide the country, I hope Holder has the department of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms investigate and prosecute, just as they are called in for the burning of any church in this country.

This is intolerable.

This is not just tolerable, it's acceptable in a free society. You say one can't burn their own property? I suppose you would support making it a crime to burn the flag a crime, burn a book, or burn an effigy of someone. The Muslims need to learn some tolerance, and if one commits an act of violence as a result, they should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

The church in question has 50 members, it is to a real church what a garage band is to a real rock band performing before tens of thousands.
