Animal Control Through Birth Control (PHOTOS)

  First Posted: 9/7/10   Updated: 5/25/11

Many species are endangered, but there are animals out there who are doing way too well. Animals like deer, pigeons, and even elephants are multiplying so fast, they are becoming a nuisance and tearing up habitats.

When culling by slaughter is too offensive or inhumane, and transporting the animals elsewhere is too expensive, in comes birth control to keep the animals and habitat healthy, and the humans happy too.

Pigeons In Hollywood
1 of 9
Last year Hollywood pioneered the method of giving birth control to pigeons, and it seems to be working. Automatic bird feeders spray a special pellet at certain times, and pigeons flock. Within five months, the number of pigeons arriving at a feeder dropped from 150 to 50, an encouraging sign.

The birth control works by scrambling the inside of eggs, and preventing them from hatching.

Now Las Vegas is trying out the system, and other communities are expressing interest as well. When you’ve got a solution that both city officials and animal rights activists can get behind, you know you’ve got a winner.
