Greta Garbo's Malibu Property "La Esperanza" On The Market For $12.6 Million

First Posted: 09/07/10 12:21 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:35 PM ET

Via LA Times: Greta Garbo's Malibu beach retreat is similar in size, specs, and even market price to the Marion Davies mansion we recently wrote about. Both are around 5,000-6,000 square feet, have five bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms, and are in the mid-$12 million price range. But Garbo's "La Esperanza" in Malibu has Davies' Beverly Hills mansion beat when it comes to beachfront views (200 feet of ocean!) and its nearby "Cape-Cod inspired beach cottage."

The contemporaries both successfully transitioned from silent film stars to actress in "talkies" during the 1920s and 1930s. While Davies lived a gregarious life, entertaining with her billionaire boyfriend William Randolph Hearst at their many estates, Garbo chose to live her life in seclusion and commissioned the Malibu property to be her own private retreat.

""Ummm, this is $12 million plus?! It looks like the Beverly Hillbillies have been living here. For a $12 million house you would expect a little taste. "" Long story short. This is a beach pad, no more no less, what most people would consider a shack will go for a couple million in Malibu. Money = taste? No money affords the luxury of hiring a decorator with taste.

I'd be interested inhow many of these owners are leaving the state. With the continuing implosion, housing prices keep dropping.Certainly,a lot of celebrity homes have been on the market.the owners can stay at a hotel when they come to work, and get out with some equity

I like it better than the Davies one.

She also had an amazing place in Manhattan. Does anyone know where she got all this money? She didn't work that long before she became a recluse.

She was actually a very shrewd investor. She took her 'movie star movie' and made herself a sizable fortune in 'retirement'.

Beach houses in Malibu did not cost all that much back in the day. They were expensive, but not extraordinarily so. People who bought these in the 60's and early 70's were not the mega-rich. Many of them live there in a very middle class fashion (as I suspect is the story behind this home).

The views are stunning . . . but it looks like a cheap rental on the inside . . . the original charm must have been remodeled out of existence. What a shame.

agreed. I couldn't find any "Cape Cod" charm at all.

why can't we all just get along?

the only good thing about this house is the location and view. The rest is nowhere near the asking price.

No offense to Ms. Garbo, but I'd take Marion Davies' digs for period charm any day. "La Esperanza" looks like it's made one too many trips to Home Depot.

Nice, but it looks like it's undergone extensive renovations since Garbo lived there.

Tory Spelling should take note. No way she's getting $150,000,000 for her McMansion compared to this Garbo gem.

Tory Spelling does not own the McMansion; it is her mother, Candy Spelling. I doubt she will even inherit as they do not get along.

I'm getting tired of all the flaunting of mansion sales on HuffPo, all considered. More articles in the Philanthropy section needed on balance. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/philanthropy

I see a photo of Paramahansa Yogananda, famous Indian guru from the past century, on the table. The owners are spiritual with a Hindu flavor.

Yup looks like the balcony railing in pic 12 needs a paint job.

Wow, what a poorly presented property! They would have more luck with it being empty.
