Pakistani Ambassador: Glenn Beck Should Oppose Quran Burning

WASHINGTON — Pakistan's ambassador to the United States is calling on conservative radio and television host Glenn Beck to denounce the planned burning of the Quran to show that Americans are tolerant of other faiths.

"I think it would help if Mr. Glenn Beck came out against it, and said that people of faith do not burn the books of people of other faith," Husain Haqqani told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Beck earlier this week wrote in an Internet blog posting that burning the Quran is like burning the flag or the Bible – something people can do in the United States, but shouldn't.

"Our good Muslim friends and neighbors will be saddened," he wrote. "It makes the battle that they face inside their own communities even harder."

It was unclear whether Haqqani was aware of the blog posting. A telephone message left with the Pakistani Embassy was not immediately answered.

The diplomat warned that if Florida Pastor Terry Jones goes ahead with his plans to burn copies of the Quran, it will set off a massive reaction in parts of the Muslim world.

Jones has said he is still determined to go ahead with the protest at his small church despite pressure from the White House and other U.S. officials to cancel it. Military leaders have warned that burning the Muslim holy book will inflame extremists and could trigger repercussions against U.S. troops and citizens abroad.

"The United States should live up to its high ideals and all these people who are against religious extremism and intolerance in the Muslim world should also speak up against meaningless gestures such as burning the Quran," said Haqqani.

He said Pakistani leaders understand the concept of free speech and will do what they can to manage the reaction in their country.

I for 1 am surprised by GB's comment--because it is exactly what I think & trust me I never ever thought GB & I would share an opinion.

Regarding the burning of the Koran, it is stupid, idiotic, & particularly intolerant. But it is totally legal. He has the right to do it. Even if he doesn't have the common sense not to.

All this for one book?
Come on and admit that an outcry like this goes way, way beyond burning a book or two.
This represents censorship vs. free speech, mosque at 9/11 vs Catholic church at 9/11, liberal idealism against pragmatic conservatism, sharia eye for eye vengeance against Christian forgiveness, hot headed imam's and iatolas against a democracy, the stone age against civilized western world, .... indeed Islam against Christianity. And just like during the crusades, Christianity is getting tired of being the only one to give in.

Something to ponder. I wrote ad nausem in August that putting the mosque (or whatever you want to call it) at that particular location in New York was legal, yet insensitive. Well...what this nitwit was planning to do was equally legal (permits permitting) yet equally as insensitive and yet liberals had a conniption fit over it. Where is the consistency of opinion here?

I felt both were cases were sensitivity trumped legality yet did we see the same liberal outrage when public funds were being used to pay for a crucifix sitting in urine? It seems to me the very threat of this idiotic burning played directly into this pastor's case that extremists have taken over the religion. When democracy and freedom of speech is encouraged to be stifled here because of what the minority extremists might do "over there," who exactly is making the successful point here? Liberals or this fool in Florida?

Score a victory for the fool.

Best thing I have read all day.

I sure would like to see Olbermann, Maddow, Shultz, and Mathews come out in support of the pastor and call all those people that oppose the quran burning a Christian Hating Bigot.

How many bibles are allowed in Iran, Saudi Arabia or Kuwait?
And the reason the number is near zero is because they burn all bibles that they confiscate.
This crank was going to burn just one Quran and the whole world was making a Federal case of it.

The quesition that needs to be asked is, if one crack pot with 50 followers generates death threats to American children from Muslim politicians, Imams and the general Muslim public and we cater to that overreaction, we have a grave problem with ourselves. This sounds like submit to Islam's sensitivities or die. Where did the religion of peace go?

maybe you did not hear ...  no one will cover anything out of Florida's planned freedom of speech Quran burning.

the so called Pastor who thought God was speaking to him about this Quran burning, standing against these extremist Islam & supporting the 9/11 victims (including Muslims who died) -- has decided he is not going to burn another religions holy scriptures after all.

why?  because the Imam of the center near ground zero  supposidly made a deal to move this Islamic center.

problem? the Imam says he never spoke to this Pastor.

could it be this Pastor is lying?
