Back To School Violence: 16-Year-Old Killed, Teacher Stabbed By 13-Year-Old

The school year has just begun for Chicago Public School students, but already a high school student has been killed and a teacher attacked.

On Wednesday afternoon, 16-year-old Deantonio Goss was walking home from school in the 8600 block of South Saginaw Avenue when he was fatally shot, according to the Chicago Tribune. An 18-year-old student was also wounded in the incident.

ABC Chicago reports that Goss was a sophomore at Bowen High School, and wanted to be a barber some day. He also enjoyed boxing.

Goss' father told ABC he blames his son's death on a violent community. Even before the school year began, parents and community members were looking for ways to keep students safe. The school is even part of a program designed to curb gun violence near schools, ABC reports:

It's called Safe Passage, an $8 million program funded by federal stimulus dollars. Trained monitors, equipped with cell phones and highly-visible clothing, are being stationed on several blocks around some schools.

The violence was not limited to the South Side. About 6 p.m. on the Northwest Side, two boys ages 13 and 16, were wounded in a drive-by shooting. The incident happened in the 2300 block of North Lockwood Avenue and both boys suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to ABC.

Also on Wednesday afternoon, a CPS teacher was the victim of violence.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, a 27-year-old teacher was attempting to break up a fight at Pickard Elementary School in Pilsen when he was stabbed by a 13-year-old.

When the boy left the school, someone who reportedly witnessed the incident told him to come back. Police told the Sun-Times he then "held up the bloody cutting instrument and dropped it down a sewer, saying: 'Look, I'm getting rid of it!' He then fled."

The teacher was given stitches for laceration to his left shoulder, and the boy was not in police custody as of Thursday morning.

I'm a white south-sider and I realize I don't have much authority to say this, but black "leaders" need to do a better job, plain and simple.
Here's an example from today's paper:

Gale Sayers charity has collected over 500,000 for after school programs since 2006 and done NOTHING with it.
There is too much talk and not enough action amongst those who would call themselves leaders in the black community.

There is a better way than violence. What I would like to see is more community organizing, Church Groups, NGO's, whatever, working to give these kids an alternative to gangs, hell even stuff like an auxilary fire department would work.

I got a solution, Franco used it in Spain and it controlled violence and any other anti-social behavior for decades, post a soldier with a rifle on every corner. Start at Roosevelt Rd, go sounth until 95th St and from Western Ave east to the lake.

That should cover all the toubled neighborhoods.

I don't know what to say. This is awful. Perhaps if that "code of silence" was lifted, they would find out who does these shootings. At the same time I realize that I don't live in those neighborhoods and the police eventually leave. Then the neighborhood has to fend for itself.

So. For $8 million, how many people got rich with 'administrative fees'.. I bet they make the monitors do the job as community service or otherwise for free...

This is just wrong on so many levels. There is no simple answer to a complex problem like this. I don't pretend to know what the solution is, but as a nation we need to do better.

I wonder the same thing. Its wrong that someone like Fr. Pfleger should be the most outspoken anti violence voice on the south side. The community needs some leaders to step up from within.

This culture of violence won't change until young men are rewarded for different behavoir.

Cultures are really reward systems. The "gangsta" or "hip hop" culture rewards young men for xy and z behavoir. The sports culture rewards young men for a different set of behaviors.

Men, especially young me, are like trained seals. And women throw the fish.

Change the rewards, you change the behavoir. As long as young men are rewarded for this nonsense, we will get endless nonsense. It will never change, until the reward changes.
