The Most Ridiculous Magazines Of All Time (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 09/10/10 09:03 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:35 PM ET

We all have guilty pleasures when it comes to reading material, both print and online. With our media more accessible and diverse than ever before, it takes real commitment to actually subscribe to a magazine, which is why most of us stick to general interest fare. But magazines constantly reaffirm that they are more relevant than ever, even in unexpected ways. Even some of the most marginal or shockingly specific hobbies and interests have enough die-hard fanatics to maintain a regular circulation. Check them out and vote for the most ridiculous! (UPDATE: We edited a couple out to make room for your additions! PARTICIPATE!)

The Thompson is an odd choice for Shotgun News, what with it not being a shotgun and all. The Model Airplane magazine isn't terribly surprising. There are quite a few parks where I see people performing aerobatics with model airplanes, some of which are remarkable pieces of work.

Personally, I do not reccommend Shotgun News, at least, not on a subscription basis. Gun List is a much better publication because the ads are segregated by make and model. Shotgun News does, however, have a quaint old-timey atmosphere to it that is well worth a look. There is no better gun magazine than Guns and Ammo, although Shooting Times comes close, for up-to-date, interesting information on firearms. Wolfe Publishing, out of Prescott, Arizona, I think, has a couple of truly niche publications called "Rifle" and "Reloader." American Handgunner is a great mag for cops and folks who carry a sidearm. The artices by New England cop and legal expert, Masood Ayoub, are the best reading available for the legal aspects of handgun shootings. The founding fathers left contemporary America a unique and providential heritage. They recognized a need for the Constitution to recognize the right of every person, when confronted with circumstances of the most extreme, to have the practical means to defend onself with deadly force. Periodical literature on firearms is an almost-necessary and pleasurable ancillary aspect of that right contained in the second amendment.

This was weak. The whole point of magazines is to be niche. And only a couple in this list were actually surprising. The rest I just kept wondering, how sheltered are the article writers that they think a magazine about guns or model airplanes is overly niche. Try harder.

Top of my ridiculous list is Garden & Gun magazine. Let's see, first I'll fertilize my veggies and then I'll go blast an animal. Nice.

Who loves Cats? Would everyone who loves cats please raise their paw?

I hate cats, but my wife recently lost her 15-year old part Maine Coon, named Jennie-Any-Dots, and her 17-year old part Siamese, Tigger. It is a sad time around here. Jennie was a feral cat who never lost her suspicion of either of us, unless it was time to eat. When we first got her, she made no sound and we thought her voice box was damaged. Eventually, she came around and began talking. She had the most unique mournful song, which she would only voice when alone in a room, more than once in our living room facing the patio sliding door, as if she was calling out to an absent friend on the outside. It was spooky. It was a multi-toned cry that would last for 2 or 3 seconds. Tigger was very talkative and when young friendly with me. The day before he died, he came to me, emaciated and unsteady on his feet, and let out a deep, angry cry as if to say, "what is happening to me?" He was dead the next day. I don't think I will ever forget the depth of sound and emotion of that cry. I hate cats.

You guys need to get out more often, as you would be surprised how many adult males are into model aircraft, R/C(radio-controlled, that fly from a remote). Sure, it's a niche.

I have seen great models at shows and have passed, just driving in various parts of the country, at least three real air-strips for these planes, with wind-socks, runways and everything.

In fact a relative designed a real-life single-seat stunt plane that rather quickly was also a model R/C aircraft. supposed to be a super-flyer but not something I am directly involved with, R/C aircraft.

I would expect that a lot if not most of the turquoise jewelry and silverwork sold in Cowboys and Indians comes from actual Indian craftspeople.

Like any product for sale, buyer beware. However Arizona and New Mexico native Americans produce an incredibly rich output of jewelry and textile products. They have achieved an international reputation for creative and beautiful design. Bisbee Blue is a famous Arizona turquoise first mined at the Phelps Dodge copper mine near Bisbee, Arizona. Some of the most desirable Indian jewelry is made from Bisbee Blue turquoise. Arizona natives also make fine wool rugs with as many as 200 threads to the inch. Here is a link featuring information about Bisbee Blue turquoise. Note, I have no connection with the company, but their short video is one of the best discussions on Bisbee Blue I have seen.

My favorite mag was Casket and Sunnyside, a journal of the funeral trade. Featured centerspread ads for the fine line of Champion embalming products.

Um, Indians call themselves Indians. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, The world's largest Native American news source, shipped internationally, is Indian Country Today.
