Kris Kerr: Man Took Photo Of Attacking Shark Before Punching It (VIDEO)

First Posted: 09/10/10 11:52 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:35 PM ET

Kris Kerr was in the water near Florida's Smyrna Beach this weekend and got the surprise of his life. He was taking pictures of his friend surfing when a shark charged him. Instead of swimming for his life, Kerr took a picture of the shark coming at him and then punched the shark, avoiding any injury. In an exclusive interview on the "Early Show," available below, Kerr said he'd always said he'd get a picture if a shark came after him.

I went to New Smyrna Beach High School with both of them and the story is true, but the even scarier part is so are the mustaches. Check them out Kris- http://www.facebook.com/Kerrtography?ref=ts and Ethan- http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1246276271

I think the man might be Rollie Fingers grandson.

I always have thought that punching a dog or shark would be better than turning away from it.

Why didn't he bite the shark? Now that would have been a story.

We had a surfer punch a shark this summer by the pier. It was on a fisherman's line and the surfer was trying to free it. He did but had to punch the shark in the process. I'm not sure what possessed the surfer but he probably was pissed a the fisherman since they try to cast and hit you with their sinkers for fun while you are surfing. Lots of love out there.

Am I the only one who thought this was really Levi Johnston in disguise? Great mullet and 'stache!

Why posting a college prank? The stupid mustaches, the punch in the shark, just ridiculous.

The mullet. The moustache. Takes me mack to a time (late 70's through the 80's) when men were macho and not metros3xu@l. Weeeeeeeeeeeee. It's a living, breathing artefact from another era.

Hard to tell from the photo but that shark doesnt exactly look like a man eater or a threat and if his friend said he saw all the mullet fleeing thats probably what it was after.

You would not care "why" if you saw a shark coming at you, would you?

I have actually snorkeled and dove with blacktips and hammerheads, and they are very indifferent of your presence. I dont know if I was surfing and saw one coming at me but I dont think I'd go off hitting it unless I was sure it was attacking me and a threat. Just seems like risking getting bit even more. The next time you see a rottweiler walking up to you why dont you give it a kick and see how that changes its disposition.

I'm pretty sure if this was a maneater hitting it isnt going to help, sharks are used to getting hit during attacks, its why they roll their eyes back, that elephant seal is going to be flailing around a lot harder than you are. Many large sharks have a predation method where they will bite once and wait for their victim to expire this and the sharks biting things they arent used to is more likely why sharks release people and not them flailing their arms.
