Hundreds Of New Yorkers Volunteer On 9/11

Hundreds of Manhattan residents volunteered to help their less fortunate neighbors in honor of 9/11 on Saturday, NY1 reports.

The effort was part the National Day of Service and Remembrance, declared by the Obama administration. The day encourages Americans to honor the victims of 9/11 through volunteer work.

The volunteers dished out meals to more than 700 people at a soup kitchen on the Lower East Side.

"I consider it as paying forward. I don't want to dwell on the past," said volunteer Diana Mercado. "It's something you got to step away from and move forward."
