The World's Largest Megacities (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 09/11/2010 11:37 am   Updated: 05/25/2011 5:35 pm

This week GlobalPost published an interesting series on the challenges posed by the world's rapid urbanization, focusing in particular on Dhaka, Bangladesh, which it identified as the "fastest growing megacity in the world."

Indeed, the population growth numbers in Dhaka are staggering. According to U.N. population figures, in 1985 the city had less than five million people; by 2009 it had just under 15 million. By 2025 it is projected to surpass 20 million inhabitants. But Dhaka, of course, is not alone in this growth: as an article on megacities in the Christian Science Monitor last May noted, by 2050 7 out of 10 people would be living in one. (A megacity is typically defined as an urban agglomeration that has more than 10 million people.) Currently the world has 20 or so of these cities: by 2025 we could have more than 30.

As for what this means for the planet, the authors of GlobalPost's report see the issue as follows:

The world's rapid urbanization is a reality fraught with both peril and hope. The peril is obvious. Overcrowding, pollution, poverty, impossible demands for energy and water all result in an overwhelming sense these megacities will simply collapse. But the hope, while less obvious, needs more attention. The potential efficiencies of urban living, the access to health care and jobs, along with plummeting urban birth rates have all convinced some environmental theorists the migration to cities may in fact save the planet. But only, these experts hasten to add, if this shift is well managed.

With that in mind, here is a look at the current 10 largest megacities, along with their projected 2025 populations. Full U.N. data here.

I suggest if you want to understand the reason behind these photos and ratings, read the series on GlobalPost.com. This isn't a race to rank megacities, it's a thorough and thoughtful exploration into why and how the megacities were created, what are their challenges and what may be the benefits.

Celebrating over population. Earth cannot sustain human population growth. War, disease, famine ecological collapse are all distinct possible futures for a large segment of the planet.

can human beings live like ants and bees in hive like cities when human beings lack the social traits of those insects....i dont think so....humans are not made like that....the earth is not a hive....
human beings and the earth as well would be better off without mega cities and mega millions of people in them.

I just LOVE Tokyo, such a great city. Even though it's crowded everyone is so chilled and calm when walking around. Love it, amazing city.

I agree. It's just not population. It's a lot of everything. Amazing.

When you collect them into a smaller area, eradication becomes easier.

Looking at these pictures made me lose my breath. My city just hit the 2 million mark and I find it UNBEARABLE; can't imagine what it must be like to be in a place that is 10 times the size. Nothing beats a small town,

Same place as it’s always been – at the delta of the Chao Phraya river. Oh and it has an official population of 5,658,953, which would explain its absence from the list.

New York - Newark??
That's not the same city. It's not even the same state!
(Obviously a pathetic attempt to get an American city on the list.)

I don't know why there would be a desire to make it on this list...such sprawl...

"...Largest Mega Cities"? Isn't that a little redundant?

Weird - when Chinese cities like Shanghai are shown, the photos depict bustling city centers and tall buildings. But when Indian cities are shown (Delhi and Mumbai), one is depicted using snapshot of an urban slum (in the Old Delhi area) and an overcrowded public transport (most likely a train) in Mumbai.

Oh? The Calcutta picture is beautiful, which I think is only fair as that's the Indian city that people most enjoy portraying as a great big horrible slum.

Why are we rating slides of mega-cities? What's up with that? Ridiculous! Karachi #1(10th on pop list)? What does that mean? Was it because it featured people instead of structures? Disaster sympathy? A rush of Pakistani voters? Hey HP, just give us a list along with the pop projections OK? The viewfinder journey was extraneous.
