Sharron Angle Surrogate Danny Tarkanian: I Disagree With Advocating 'Second Amendment Remedies'

First Posted: 09/12/10 10:26 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:35 PM ET

A surrogate for Nevada GOP Senate candidate Sharron Angle is saying that advocating "Second Amendment remedies" in order to effect political change is going too far and revealing that he was pressured to push such comments by some Republicans while running for the Senate.

In a Sept. 8 interview on the Mike Wiley Radio Show, Danny Tarkanian, who lost the GOP primary to Angle, said such statements -- which were floated by Angle -- were "a little bit extreme." From the exchange, captured by Jon Ralston of the Las Vegas Sun:

Reid's been attacking her on her comments saying that we have Second Amendment remedies, and I don't know exactly what quote that he's been using, and even if it's an accurate quote because he's misquoted her sometimes, that she had said we ought to use Second Amendment remedies if Congress doesn't change their direction. Now, I've been on the campaign trail, and I heard a lot of people say to me, you know, why do we have our Second Amendment rights, it's to, so the public can overthrow the government if they fail to respond to the government's will. That may be all good and well, but I'm not going to take the position that we need a civil uprising to overthrow our government.

What's perhaps more interesting is his admission that many people in the Republican Party were encouraging him to advocate a civil insurrection if Congress doesn't change hands. "I had people that were upset at me in the campaign that I wouldn't go as far to agree that there should be a civil uprising," he said, adding that there were "people in the Republican Party that, when I was campaigning, wanted me to go that far to say that." He was sure to add that he wasn't necessarily saying that Angle was calling for these extreme measures.

Since losing to Angle, Tarkanian has launched a 527 political committee called Harry Reid Votes, Inc., which will use the Internet, radio, and TV to "remind residents of the 'poor decisions' Reid has made for Nevada." In August, Tarkanian attracted attention for telling the New York Times, "Reid had no chance to win before. He has a shot to win now. He could still lose, but I have to say he is favored." He also recently slipped and "brought focus once again on Angle's Social Security position metamorphosis," and his mom has joined the effort to re-elect Reid.

ISecond ammendment remedies are necessary, but not to oust democrats to replace with tea partiers or republicans. The system is reaching the critical mass point of corruption where we need the sort of massive housecleaning of the federal government that hasn't happened since Teapot Dome and it won't happen without second ammendment actions.

It's tempting to believe that Angle and her party want a violent overthrow of government, but I think she (like Palin and some others) are just trying to appeal to the Neanderthals among us. The morons who love their guns more than their kids. The ones who didn't want a black man as president unless it was someone like Clarence Thomas (affirmative action was OK for me, now let's slam the door on the rest). It's amazing that her mouthpiece would reveal that GOP people pressured her (they probably did...she's a puppet) to talk about Second Amendment "remedies." It's posturing--branding herself. It's more sickening than scary to me that the lowest of the low will stoop to whatever level they're told they need to stoop...to achieve power. I live in Nevada. I'll make it to the polls.

I am shocked that the republicans want civil insurrection. Shocked I tell you. Maybe its time we did have a civil insurrection and made republicans wear yellow stars on their suits at the bank.

I am sick of these people. They are destroying our political system

I am not "nervous", because "Second Amendment" thugs will be shot down, imprisoned and prosecuted for treason by the legitimate government of the United States of America should they be so foolhardy as to activate an insurrection. In this nation, treason by citizens is seen by some as romantic and cute. Consider the romanticizing of the Confederacy and their treasonous behavior prosecuted as our nation's Civil War. You will be hard pressed to find the Confederates' behavior described as treason in any book, article or treatment, yet, that is what it is.

The people fomenting this sedition and treason and treachery in the name of second amendment rights are a concern. A phony intelllectual case is being crafted which alleges that citizens have the option of taking up arms against the US government should they feel unheard or disapprove of what is going on. Nonsense, yet the idea is gaining traction.

Get a grip or grab your gun and be foolish. We will have no problem helping Second Amendment insurrectionists on their way to the grave should these vile threats be enacted.

This clown doesn't know that Angle was caught on tape saying those things. Is he stupid or just dishonest?

If WE the people who elected the first Black President do NOT get involved and I mean RIGHT now, we are in for some very black times. The Radical Right is NEVER going to get what they want, a return to "States Rights" because the Constitution forbids it! Thus they are never going to get what they want and unless we send a very strong message this election to that effect we are in for a real locked up government that gets NOTHING done. The Government Shutdown we experienced under the Clinton Administration is NOTHING compared to what some in the Radical Right are prepared to do.

I have read on this thread people supporting overthrowing the government through armed insurrection. I read one that said true patriots are people that protect the people from the federal government and making statements that these people are the real patriots. You are supporting people like Timothy McVey who bombed the federal building in Okla with children there in daycare. Is this what you want? Or do you want some of the 'former law enforcement officers and ex military' to attack congress with weapons? The people promoting the "2nd amendment remedy" don't know what the consequences would be. Apparently you people that want to resort to the 2nd amendment remedy are supporters of McVey ideology. If you are, just be hopeful that you don't match up with big bubba in your cell in a federal pen.

What really needs to happen is , between now and NOV. the Rethugs have to answer to the voters EXACTLY what their stands are Debates, public forums, interviews with the non-fox media. Even video of them saying on record they wo'nt talk to the press says volumes, as well as Vid of sprinting across parking lots to get to the safety of their car. Imagine if they were made to "stand and deliver".In a democracy, it seems that's the least they owe to constituents from whom they are seeking votes. And why are so many losers in GOP primaries refusing to endorse their former opponents. Even dick armey does'nt want anything to do with that whacko O'Donnell in Delaware. So c'mon you Rethugs. Speak up for the record. Where is the strength of your convictions?

It's unbelievable, isn't it? The way Conservative candidates are dodging the press and refusing to be interviewed except by their supporters.

The fact that there are no debates is very telling.
That's the one place they can't hide...I don't see why it's not obvious to more Repubs...I'm doing my best out here to get as many people to the only poll that really counts..

Earlier, in this thread, I criticized the main stream media for not reporting on this story.

But now I see how fast this thread got out of hand maybe they are right in not reporting this story... yet. i say "yet" because a story like this cannot be suppressed for long.
