Dennis Basso Brings Fur To Fashion Week (PHOTOS, POLL)

First Posted: 09/15/2010 7:56 am   Updated: 05/25/2011 5:40 pm

Sure, this Fashion Week is for warm weather collections, but that didn't stop designer Dennis Basso from parading some animal skins down his runway. On Tuesday the famous furrier showed his spring/summer 2011 collection, which incorporated chinchilla, Russian sable, python and alligator--albeit not in every ensemble.

PETA responded by holding a silent, partially naked protest across the street.

What do you think of the collection overall?

Quick Poll

Dennis Basso's use of fur and animal skin is...

Gorgeous.

Not great.

Absolutely grotesque.

Dear Huffinton Post, I believe you are biased in removing my fellow animal-right advocate, Linda Camac's, post regarding "Animals Skinned Alive" and those that might think otherwise. How do you dispute the hundreds of videos that are recorded on the attrocities these poor animals go through by the evil hands of humans, for the only property they h...old: Their fur. Enough with our own vile greed and wants. Enough with celebrity and fashion whims, these are real live's that suffer. Come out of your Neanderthal mindsets and everyone Stop Wearing Fur!

Animals are not 'skinned alive' in the fur industry, that is simply animal rights propaganda.
While there is one video of a Raccoon Dog being skinned alive in China (which many experts believe to be staged) it does not represent the fur industy in the slightest.
That is like saying the evil Conklin Dairy farm represents all dairy farms, if that was the case, everyone would STOP consuming dairy products!

I am not a PeTA type insane animal rights nut. I wear leather shoes for example. I don't even see a problem with wearing fur if one wants to, I just don't happen to want to. This all to say that I am not judging based on the use of fur in the collection. I just found it to be boring. Every dress looks the same, He has only one basic pattern. BORING!

Absolutelly grotesque.
No reasons to wear fur, no reasons to kill animals, XXI Century... Wake up people.
Cold weather? there's a lot of things to wear not made of animals.

There's really no need to use fur; If one must, there are very nice pieces of "faux" out there; And I actually think they look better than genuine fur. Give an animal a break!
08:18 PM on 09/15/2010
using fur is ridiculous, an animal dies ( many times they are skinned alive) just for a bunch of idiots that think that looking like neanderthals is cool

Who cares?!! If you want to wear fur, wear it. If not, then don't. I don't understand wearing it, myself. I mean we (women) spend all this money taking hair and weight off, only to put on a big hulking piece of fur? Sounds stupid, but that's not a crime.

Boo, those people don't care about dead animals. No amount of red paint, or gruesome video is going to stop them from wearing fur. And if you care about the animals, then you won't wear their skins. If you don't care about the animals, well, you know the rest. Now do YOU get it? Sheesh

Give me a break. The animals are rarely 'skinned alive' for the simple reason that it is dangerous and inefficient to skin animals alive. And the 'innocent' comment sounds to me just like things said by the anti-abortionists who shoot doctors.

Ok, lets start growing human babies to kill them for spare parts.

Do you honestly think that those people would think twice about killing human babies or adults for spare parts? Sheesh There are poor people all across the globe who wake up without organs. Newsflash. Some people only care about themselves. They don't care about how their fur is made or the poor animal that suffered. They also wouldn't think twice about some poor person in China if they needed a kidney. You guys are closed minded to other peoples opinions. You think its annoying that I disagree with you. Well get used to it, because its bound to happen again.

I weep for the models who are trying to make a living. But they, the designer, and his customers are still scum.

While Dennis Basso sends animal fur down the runway, the most lucrative part of his business involves hawking faux fur on QVC. He is next secheduled to be on QVC at these times:

"Tune in to QVC for Dennis Basso Boutique Sunday, September 26, 2010 from 1 – 2 a.m., 10 – 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. – Midnight ET."

I have heard many people who oppose the use of fur will be calling in to QVC at these times to let them know they will not do business with them until fur industry shill Dennis Basso is dropped as a vendor.

I will call. Dennis Basso grosses me out.

Gross! Have these designers not seen any of the undercover PETA videos? Or are they just sick heartless people who don't care? Absolutely deplorable.

Are you aware that many of the undercover PeTA videos are staged. Sometimes, PeTA operatives even encourage gullible employees to abuse animals, then they just film the abuse without raising a finger to stop it. PeTA is composed of hypocrites who do not care a whit about animals. If you REALLY care about animals, look into animal welfare organizations like NAIA. They really do try to help give animals better lives. PeTA kills around 90% of the animals that fall into its hands--and sometimes tosses their bodies into dumpsters.

The notion that animals are somehow ā€œskinned aliveā€ is nothing short of absolutely laughable and glaringly shows how ignorant and gullible people can be.
Do you honestly believe that everything you see on the Internet is true?
Try skinning a mink alive, and just be sure to have an orthopedic surgeon available so he can assemble the pieces together and reattach your hand to your arm.
Abused or neglected animals do not produce quality fur.

That ONE video (7 years old now) of the ONE raccoon dog getting skinned alive was pretty much proven to be staged by the animal rights group the SAP.
