Michelle Obama

Changed the game by ... taking command of the nation’s war on childhood obesity. The First Lady’s commitment to the health of our children is as well-rounded as it is realistic, embracing both smarter eating and physical exercise. Practicing what she preaches, Obama demonstrated the joys of locally-grown produce by planting the first organic garden on White House grounds. And, knowing that having the message be heard is as critical as the message itself, the First Lady even made an appearance as a judge on “Iron Chef America.”

She said it: The obesity epidemic “isn't the kind of problem that can be solved in one year, or even one administration. But make no mistake about it, this problem can be solved.”

I'd have to say for those in my age bracket, that Julia Child broke the barrier for young American cooks to do more than use canned or frozen foods like TV dinners or mac 'n cheese from a box. Some others over the years that helped catapult the food revolution include Wolfgang Puck, Jeremiah Tower, James Beard, Craig Claiborne, Mimi Sheraton plus wine and coffee folks like Kermit Lynch and Howard Schultz. Even of late for young kids, I'd include the film industry and Ratatouille.

You want to change the 'game' ? Shut down the NASA space program ; and defer the money to the un-fed children in this world !
I don't believe a single man , woman or child in Haiti , Africa ; or the streets of Detroit we're impressed by this 'accomplishment!!!

Or we could cut the US military budget by about 3% and free up the same money. IMHO primary scientific research is a real accomplishment and not at all un-leftist.

OTOH then some military brats might be added to the total of underfed children... Life's complicated.

I vote for Micheal Pollan.

I think it is great that Mrs. Obama was willing to bring the subject to a platform as large as hers to launch it off of. I myself have been working on the challenge for going on 7 years with a cook book ready for release "Kid Kulinaire" (R) , an apparel line ready and a TV Show package starting to shop around for my cooking show "Kid Kulinaire" (R) . With Mrs. Obama on deck this should be a great boost to our mutual cause, getting the attention it deserves.

Thank you First Lady for all your support towards our nations children.

Slightly off topic, but I had an instant crush when I saw the picture of Samuelsson, something about his eyes

WHat about this person and that person.....who are all those people? People on TV are not the only game changers.....and not everyone watches TV so not everyone knows them...THe influential changers are people in the background making and writing and fighting policies in the courts to change laws in the food industry. REmember this.....sugar and flour and cheese and corn syrup are the items most americans eat because they give a manufacturer the most profits.......they are the cause of disease in americans because we eat too much of it everyday.

Dear HuffPost,

You screwed this category by not including Jamie Oliver. He was THE game changer in Food. Too bad you're so short-sighted.

Bourdain definately, one of the best shows on TV. Zimmeran is just gross and without any redeeming value. Would have liked to have Jamie on the list and it is too bad that my favorite chef/instructor, Jacque Pepin was never on anything but PBS. He and Julia Child were the real pioneers in this genre. As far as the current crop of "iron chefs", Man vs. Food and the cooking throw downs/competitions they add nothing to our body of knowledge and are not even entertainment.

Oh come on!! Andrew Zimmern is fun to watch. He gets along famously with everyone. Besides, he's been to many places I've visited and the "refresher courses" so to speak.

I used to love his show but when he went to Spain it was a bitter disappointment, sorry to say this but he really didn't get as involved as I expected, and his translations were sorely lacking; never mind the other shows in languages I don't speak, I don't want to think about it. Makes me suspect... hmmm.... Oh and he totally trounced a sweet summer beverage that is hard to review negatively! What was that all about!?! Bourdain all the way!! Indeed!

Bourdain for his open-minded approach, and Julia Child for her meticulous instructions! Love them both!

How come the overwhelming majority of these so-called game changers are Americans? And a couple of ex-cons among the lot as well...?
I thought Time Magazine had cornered that niche of ignoring the rest of the world when naming "most influential people" - you know, as in where 95% of the Earth's population lives..?

Was Chef Samuelsson a candidate on the last "Next Iron Chef"? Maybe I'm confused, I watch too many cooking shows....
