Michael Steele Defends Gingrich's Comments That Obama May Have A 'Kenyan Anti-Colonial Worldview' (VIDEO)

First Posted: 09/15/10 10:55 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:40 PM ET

In an interview with CNN's John King today, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele defended former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's recent comments that President Obama may hold a "Kenyan, anti-colonial" worldview.

Speaking to the National Review recently, Gingrich wondered, "What if [Obama] is so outside our comprehension, that only if you understand Kenyan, anti-colonial behavior, can you begin to piece together [his actions]? That is the most accurate, predictive model for his behavior."

When King mentioned the comments to Steele on Wednesday, the RNC chair rejected the idea that Gingrich was "race-baiting or playing to the birther crowd" and said that because Obama's dad is from Africa, he is "of Kenyan, African descent":

KING: Former Speaker of the House, the man who is moving around as if he might run for president, said that the President of the United States has a "Kenyan, anti-colonial" view of the world.

STEELE: Who said that?

KING: Newt Gingrich.

STEELE: Okay.

KING: Is that an appropriate way to have this conversation, as a Republican leader and as a black man? Is that how you want to have this conversation?

STEELE: I don't know what being black has to do with it, but --

KING: You don't think saying the President has a "Kenyan, anti-colonial" worldview is perhaps trying to play to the lowest common denominator in politics?

STEELE: No, I don't think so, no. How do you make that stretch? Where's his dad from?

KING: What does that have to do with --

STEELE: He's of Kenyan, African descent. He has an African, continental descent. So I don't know where you're going with that. But let me just say --

KING: So you don't think it's race-baiting or playing to the birther crowd?

STEELE: No, I don't. I don't see that stretch. I know some folks out there want to, but I don't see that. I know Newt. I know that's not his mindset on that. He's talking about a worldview that comes from a different part, whether it's Europe, the African continent.

WATCH:

Steele has made bringing more people of color into the GOP a personal goal. In February 2009, he touted his "off the hook" strategy to attract more minorities, saying the conservative message needed to work in "urban-suburban hip-hop settings." In the past, Steele has refused to defend Obama against racial attacks -- such as Glenn Beck saying the President has a "deep-seated hatred for white people" -- saying that no one defended him when he ran for Maryland's U.S. Senate seat. "I don't play the race card, I don't play the race game, the way some tend to want to do," Steele said.

Part of the reason Steele may be defending Gingrich is that the former House Speaker has repeatedly stuck up for him. After news of questionable RNC expenditures at a strip club dogged Steele and raised questions about his leadership, Gingrich publicly told Republicans to stop focusing on him and worry instead about defeating Democrats in November. In January, Gingrich said, "I'm a fan of Steele's. I think he is learning, he is smart and he will be an important part of where we're going."

Mr. Steele seems to be playing--acting as if he doesn't recognize the full ramifications of
Newt Gingrich being enthralled with the racial perspectives of Dinesh D'Souza.  I could
forgive Steele for not reading The Huffington Post where the topic was discussed for
at least two full days, but I can't excuse him for not knowing the full extent of the

I honestly believe if Newt call the President the N word, Michael Steele will find a way to defend him.

If you're going to pile on Obama for possibly having ancestral views, then you shouldn't have African ancestry yourself; or a really embarrassing uncovered expenses scandal.

Love the fact that Steele had to find out who made a statement before he could decide whether to agree with it or not!  Didn't they keep him in Guam?  Better send him to the Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico, huh?

I have news for you Mr. Steele. You are of African descent too and therefore, by your own logic, you should have a very similar perspective. Perhaps even more so than Mr. Obama, who's ancestry is African only on his father's side. His mother, as you may recall is white, and therefore Mr Obama is also of European descent and by your twisted logic, should also have a European colonialist view of the world and the two should cancel each other out.

I am also of European (Belgian descent). Belgians were among the worst colonialists in history. My ancestors took a great deal of wealth out of the Congo and put nothing back into it. I am in fact the first person in my family to be born outside of Europe, so again, by your twisted logic, I should have a Belgian colonialist view of the world. Can you explain why I do not? Could free will and the fact that I was born and raised on the other side of the Atlantic ocean have anything to do with it?

PS

You don't have to call your Republican masters "Bwana" anymore.

How *does* this man look at himself in the mirror every day? I assume he does, unless he has his own personal barber, which, now that I think of it, is possible, considering his spending habits.

As kids we had a strategy when caught by our parents "You lie and I'll swear to it".
It didn't work.
Ever.
Someone please tell Steele.
On second thought, don't.

What does that even mean?

These pubs just throw scary words together into non-sensical smears and their dum_my followers eat it up.

How sad.

Can any c0n here explain to me what Newt even meant by those comments? What does Kenyan Anti-Colonialist mean?

A neo-con can't explain it but it makes a good water cooler joke for bashing liberals -- thats whats important after all.
It means he thinks like the conquered instead of the conquerer, you have to remember people like nutters gingrich think they are masters of the universe via entitlements. the only problem is imperialism is the ultimate undoing of any civilzation -- four/five/six wars in the middle east are killing the country a whole lot faster than wall street bailouts. Can anyone count the number of occupations we are running now?
Nutter's old district in GA is bleeding at the seems right now -- they tried to conquer the African Americans and gays in Atlanta, now they are the new home for hundreds of thousands of mexcians, vietnamese, malaysians, etc. Its kind of divine comeuppance when you go up there and find the remnants of the white middle class picking through thrift store donations dropped off by its minority communities.

I guess that would make Steel a trader to his African roots (if the claim was true). Oh, but he's actually more of a white dude trapped in an African American shell--hence the endorsement of a white dude over the Prez.

Michele Steele still thinks he is in slavery time and still answers to the name N WORD, that's what the Republicans call him to his face and behind his back and when they dump him, he will deserve every negative thing they will be saying about him. The will probably have him brought up on charges in the end, over money being spent inappropriately. they ill say he stole money from the RNC and just like OJ, MJ and Tiger Woods, they will try to come dragging back to the AA community looking for sympathy, but I would donate money to Sarah Palin before I would defend this m 0 r 0 n. He will get what he deserve for his butt kissing the good ole boys racist Repub;icans.

"I think he is learning, he is smart..."

I probably said that of my three-year-olds at the time, and sure enough, 20 years later, they are very functional.
