Eco Fashion Week In New York City (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 09/17/2010 8:26 am   Updated: 05/25/2011 5:40 pm

From Ecouterre.com:

While Mercedes Benz Fashion Week was centered around a new location at Lincoln Center this year, Eco Fashion Week was in full swing at The GreenShows, a premiere fashion event committed to showcasing only ethically sound, fair trade, sustainable designers. And we're not talking about the hempy, straw colored stereotypically "earth-friendly" looks of yore either - sophisticated, elegant garments from designers like Luis Valenzuela, Auralis, Samantha Pleet and JoAnn Berman enlightened fashionistas in the audience about what sustainable fashion can look like when its done right. Ecouterre was on the scene scoping out the hottest looks - click through the slideshow to check them all out.

Luis Valenzuela transformed household items like lamps into haute couture gowns on the opening night of the shows.

According to the people at Sans , “eco-fashion” doesn’t exist. They say:
get rid of production, distribution and sale. Fight waste and
consumerism. And make your own clothes!

certainly got the snooty, better-than-you verbiage down pat.

I liked #11 and #12; pretty for a change. As a home sewing person I am always looking for ideas for using remnants that I have. These could be altered for any shape, any season. BTW moderator, not enough captioning on some of the photos about what the clothes were made of. The indigo shirt dress was pretty but, why was it "green" fashion. Overall the collections looked more fashionable than in previous seasons. Huffpo should have more reporting from this area of the fashion industry.

View No. 6: This jaw-dropping flowy dress in a deep shade of yellow had the audience oohing and ahhing.

It's clear why this was a jaw-dropper. It's absolutely stunning and wearable.

I wonder if the stuff the models have holding their hair up so high is eco-friendly.

sure it is. they just forgot to mention that they suspended them upside down, for an undisclosed amount of time, so it grew that way naturally.

Yes. Both the hair products and makeup were environmentally friendly. It is possible to be beautiful without wrecking our health, or that of our planet.

I was surprised that I like so many of the designs. I expected much worse. Except the shoes...those had to go.

What? No fur?

Just kidding. I like this much better than the fugly fur designs they created this year by killing baby animals.

noone's figured out a way to recycle and reform the stuff they get from pet groomers yet? great natural insulation properties and a renewable resource.

Why don't designers make male models walk down the runways looking like BUFFOONS in shoes that are impossible to stand in let alone walk in?
Just sayin.....................

if it was more normal and usable, would it still be considered art/creative?

The gown and parasol in #2 is total win.

The shorts in #4 are ugly. Reminds me of the 80s, and who wants to be reminded of the 80s?

Polo in #5 is strange and unusual. Not a fan.

Shirt dress in #8 is very nice. Love the pattern, the color, and the arm chain accessory.

Shoes in #9 looks tired and boring. Not even trying to be nice. Just cause we're having a "depression" doesn't mean we have to dress like it.

#10,#11,#12...Just cause we're denying we're having a "depression", doesn't mean we have to dress like it.

Actually, #11 is pretty cool. I like the flashy oranges. Really bring out the tan. The jewellery is also nice. Love the blocky handbag. Shoes are also cool looking. Would love to see the shoes at a different angle though.

This has to be the gayest comment I have ever had posted to Huffingtonpost.

Fanned for liking what I like :). Nothing wrong with being gay or gay-ish, friend. We're willing to let others have taste and courage if they have taste and courage :D. But you're going to have to sharpen your snark knives if you want to aspire to queenery.

Peace, and style.
