I used to host a radio program where I interviewed writers. Only two ever canceled on me within 24 hours of taping: Richard Ford and Erica Jong. Ford called and said he had plane flight trouble. He's not, however, a very good liar. I didn't believe him at the time and in short order found out he had spent the evening having dinner with someone I know. Jong had a minion phone me to say she wasn't feeling "up to it." But not surprisingly, she WAS up to appearing on a TV morning show at the same time my radio program was supposed to tape. Are those two so lacking in imagination they didn't think I would be able to see through those flimsy excuses? Maddeningly, I had read ALL of their books to prepare for the interviews, and believe me, some of them weren't worth the time.

Ms. Skloot's rudeness is not typical. The vast majority of my guests were exceptionally prompt, polite, generous with their conversation, and appreciative of the opportunity to talk about their work. To my surprise, I found poets to be much more engaging interview subjects than novelists. I have some wonderful memories from that job.

I certainly wish Ms. Skloot a speedy recovery from whatever it is that's going to make her ill in a couple of weeks.

I read the first chapter of immortal and really enjoyed it, I can't wait to finish it.
