Pope Apologizes To U.K.: Deeply Sorry, Ashamed Of Sex Abuse

LONDON — Pope Benedict XVI apologized Saturday to five people who were molested by priests as children in his latest effort to defuse the sex abuse crisis shaking his church, as thousands of people angered at the Vatican's response marched in central London in the biggest protest of his 5-year papacy.

Early Sunday, Scotland Yard said six men who had been detained on suspicion of plotting an attack on the pope had been freed after an investigation.

Benedict met for about 30-40 minutes with the victims – four women and a man from Scotland, England and Wales – at the Vatican's ambassador's residence in Wimbledon and expressed "his deep sorrow and shame over what the victims and their families suffered," according to the Vatican.

"He prayed with them and assured them that the Catholic Church is continuing to implement effective measures designed to safeguard young people, and that it is doing all in its power to investigate allegations, to collaborate with civil authorities and to bring to justice clergy and religious accused of these egregious crimes," it said.

Across town, abuse victims and demonstrators opposed to the pope's stance against homosexuality, abortion and using condoms to fight AIDS marched peacefully from Hyde Park to Downing Street, the major protest of Benedict's controversial four-day state visit.

They carried banners reading: "The pope is wrong – put a condom on" and "Pope protects pedophile priests."

Later Saturday, though, an estimated 80,000 people massed in Hyde Park cheering the pope as he celebrated an evening vigil.

The Vatican statement was similar to ones it issued after Benedict met with abuse victims over the past two years while visiting the United States, Australia and Malta. But continued revelations of abuse – the latest in Belgium – have failed to placate critics demanding that the pope and other Vatican officials take personal responsibility and crack down on bishops who covered up abuses by their clerics.

For the first time, Benedict also met with a group of professionals and volunteers who work to safeguard children and young people in church environments, Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi told reporters.

Bill Kilgallon, chairman of Britain's National Catholic Safeguarding Commission who helped organize the meeting, told the BBC that the victims got "something between 30 and 40 minutes."

Asked if the victims were angry, he said: "No, I wouldn't say they were angry. I think there is anger in them ... But anger can be very constructive if they work for change."

The sex abuse scandal has clouded Benedict's state visit to this deeply secular nation with a centuries-old history of anti-Catholic sentiment. Polls have indicated widespread dissatisfaction in Britain with the way Benedict has handled the crisis, with Catholics nearly as critical of him as the rest of the population.

Anger over the scandal runs high in Britain in part because of the enormous scale of the abuse in neighboring Ireland, where government reports have detailed systematic abuse of children at church-run schools and cover-up by church authorities.

During a Mass in Westminster Cathedral earlier Saturday, Benedict said he hoped the church's humiliation would help victims heal and help the church purify itself and renew its commitment to educating the young.

His comments, which were in line with his previous statements on the topic, were directed at Britain's Catholic community in the seat of the English church, a sign that Benedict wanted to speak to the faithful about the humiliation they all felt as Catholics.

"I express my deep sorrow to the innocent victims of these unspeakable crimes, along with my hope that the power of Christ's grace, his sacrifice of reconciliation, will bring deep healing and peace to their lives," Benedict said in his homily.

He acknowledged the shame and humiliation all the faithful had suffered as a result of the scandal and said he hoped "this chastisement will contribute to the healing of the victims, the purification of the church and the renewal of her age-old commitment to the education and care of young people."

Martin Brown, 34, who was in the crowd outside the cathedral, termed it "a good apology."

"He seemed to really mean it; he was genuinely sorry," Brown said. "It's good he mentioned it and it's good he didn't dwell on it for too long. He got it just about right."

The meeting with victims, part of a series of moves that began when he issued an apology during a meeting with reporters on his plane from Rome, took place near the famous tennis stadium in Wimbledon, a 30-minute ride on London's Underground from the protest march route from Hyde Park to Downing Street, near the British prime minister's residence.

Organizers said nearly 20,000 people – twice the number expected – took part. Scotland Yard took the unusual step of declining to put a figure on the crowd, saying it lacked manpower to make such an estimate.

Many wore rainbow-colored clothes or waved gay pride flags. Some members of the crowd bounced inflated condoms back and forth across the route.

Demonstrators largely focused their anger on the church's attitude toward the child abuse scandal. Richard Erson, a 40-year-old Londoner, said he was there "to protest the hatred of the pope and his church toward homosexuals and to protest the ignorance of abundant child abuse within the church."

Cornelius Crowley, a 65-year-old from Ireland, said: "I'm a Catholic school survivor of physical and psychological abuse. I hope people will open their hearts to the issue."

Still, the protest was peaceful.

Benedict's predecessor, Pope John Paul II, faced a violent protest in Utrecht, the Netherlands in 1985 involving about 1,000 to 1,500 young people.

Benedict began his day by meeting with British Prime Minister David Cameron, and other British leaders. The pope offered his condolences to Cameron following the death of his father, Lombardi said.

On Friday, Benedict's visit had been overshadowed by the arrest of six men suspected of plotting an attack on the pontiff.

But Scotland Yard said Saturday that searches of premises connected with the men had not turned up anything in the way of weapons or explosives, and later said all of the men were released by early Sunday.

On Sunday, on his last day in Britain, Benedict is scheduled to beatify Cardinal John Henry Newman, a 19th century convert from Anglicanism whom the pope wants to hold up as a model for the faithful.

Eddie Long, Atlanta Bishop, Accused Of Sexual Abuse By Male Parishioners

CNN) -- Two Georgia men have filed suit claiming that prominent Atlanta pastor Eddie Long coerced them into sex.

The suits, filed Tuesday in DeKalb County, Georgia, allege that Long used his position as a spiritual authority and bishop to coerce young male members and employees of his New Birth Missionary Baptist Church into sex.

I didnt know Baptist had bishops well you learn something every day. Now i hope the Catholic haters don;t get confused between a Baptist here. I am sure thats Post didnt put baptist in the headline. If he was a Catholic, It would read, "Catholic Bishop" Because the post has an agenda to attack the church

I'll use an example to make my point:

Benny Hex is CEO of RCC, an international franchise of child care centers run from a property given by a dictator in 1929. Pedophilia scandals have been bubbling up in his franchises worldwide for decades. Over 100,000 children have been molested by over 10,000 employees, some as early as 2 years old. Mr. Hex issued a directive years ago instructing all employees to bring all cases to him and NOT to government authorities or risk being expelled with grave financial consequences. His pedophilia employees instead are to be moved to other franchises for new abuse opportunities. The well being of RCC and its employees is far more important than its young customers whose presence in his centers and the moral decay of society are to blame. He visited the UK and met with customers and their parents. He proclaimed that his pedophile employees had lost free will and are not responsive for their actions and that RCC is above the law of all countries his franchises operate in. An enthusiastic crowd of parents cheered him on ready to offer their children to his abusing employees. Instead of being arrested to be tried for crimes against humanity in the international court, he met with the UK government and lectured them on moral issues.

You might star to notice the perfect match between this example and REALITY.

Can you explain why you keep ignoring reality or supporting these crimes?

Dear Pope:

The inaction of the Catholic Church speaks so loudly that I can't hear your spoken claim of sorrow and shame. Forgiveness and redemption has the absolute prerequisite of an unqualified admission of guilt followed by conduct and corrective action that makes the admission credible.
07:57 PM on 09/21/2010
He done more to solve this issue then you. He work hard to stop attacks and he worked hard to help victims. You liberals have done nothing but attack him for protecting childern because your in denial of the homosexuallity of the attackers.

Feel free to tell us each action he has taken that you claim shows he has worked hard to stop attacks. Be specific. Name one action taken that has amounted to an act of contrition and redemption. And BTW, just because I've made a posting doesn't mean I'm one of the people you call "you liberals". Your idiot slip is showing. I don't deny that they are pedophiles. They belong in jail to protect children from them.

The Pope met with the victims. The Pope prayed with the victims. The Pope said he "hoped ..." But what has the Pope done that's considered any real action? Praying doesn't do any good - especially the prayers of the guilty. Meeting doesn't do any good. When will the Pope do something that helps the situation?

Most Brits have a generally low opinion of all religion. The result of being exhausted from centuries of religious bickering and credal warfare. The industrial revolution of the 18th century provided a respite from it. Some measure of success for an emerging middle class,. While religious institutions became more formal structures with a decline in religious piety. The pope was the equivalent of not just the anti-Christ, but a symbol of HIGH TREASON and an ally of Philip II of Spain. As were virtually all Catholics.

For good reason, religion stood in the path of social progress and the benefit of the average person. This feeling is as strong today in all English speaking countries as it ever was.

Richard Dawkins got out of Benny 16's visit what he wanted to get out it: PUBLICITY AND BOOK SALES. Some sympathizers in parliament of Dawkins and his cult following turned on him for their own personal ends. Apparently, there's no honor amongst Humanists either.

The so-called demonstrations which were to have been mounted against Benny's presence were a complete dud. They never turned out the troops they expected and the BBC never gave them the stage they were hoping to get.

The Humanist/Secularist boors simply bored everyone to death. A major crime in Britain.

It seems that the rent-a-mob detractors on Saturday didn't have much dedication. Either that or they lacked stamina. The BBC reported that they started to drift away at around 5:45 PM on Saturday before the Hyde Park vigil. On Sunday there were only minimal protestors in Birmingham where Pope Benedict XVI went to beatify Cardinal Newman.

Nobody has been more brainwashed than western society believing it has an absolute right to continuous material happiness, self-advancement, social acceptance. That hard work, diligence, and keeping one's eye focused on the ball will lead to personal enrichment and new found power.

Religious "superstition" and brainwashing by the clergy pale into insignificance compared to the continuing myth of progress. Our legislative bodies, our politicians, and educators have created this myth and they're perpetuating it.

Ironic, the west since the Enlightenment, whether Christian or not,has continued to profess unquestioning faith in it. Long before Christianity fades into the dust or simply becomes a cult with a few followers adhering to it, the myth that we have a right to happiness and to be free of all superstition will have failed to prevent the end of the west's continuing slide into chaos and the end of it's military and political hegemony.

A new, and some will think a Dark Age, is dawning and will be built upon the ashes of progress and western society as we know it now. Those guilty Christian superstitionists will have joined forces with a triumphant, fast spreading Islam, and a renewed Judaism to form a reinvigorated world-wide belief system.

That's Benedict 16's real aim, not simply seeking converts to Catholicism.

>Nobody has been more brainwashed than western society believing it has an absolute right to continuous material happiness, self-advancement, social acceptance.

1) Western society isn't all about material happiness. If you want a guilty party for that, look no farther than the "Prosperity Gospel" and the millions of Christians who believe that if they are rich, it is a sign of god's favor on them and that he loves them more than others, even other Christians. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prosperity_theology

2) Self-advancement is what all humans strive for, whether it's through studying, building relationships, or just seeking out experiences (i.e., traveling around the world.). Some people do it with religion. Are they wrong for seeking to improve themselves through religion?

3) Let's look at this statement: "Western society believes it has an absolute right to ... social acceptance." Care to explain that one? It doesn't really make sense...

>Religious "superstition" and brainwashing by the clergy pale into insignificance compared to the continuing myth of progress.

Progress isn't a myth. It's measurable, recorded, and, FFS, is hard-wired into humans. Progress is an externality of our ability to think critically and solve problems. It's like you want us to be wild again and live in small nomadic tribes with an unwritten language.

Ran out of room to continue... d'oh :(

Part 3:

All this proves my point. Society has been brainwashed beyond recognition.

Remember what Mark Twain said: the first religion started when the first con man met the first fool.

Unfortunately, it looks that these con man still rule the world and plenty of fools are cheering them on.

Since you seem to be a defender of the catholic religion and your religion makes truth claim regarding the bible, your god and morality based on both, you should come with verifiable and falsifiable evidence to support your claims and until you do what you defend is superstition. And brainwashing young children with this is childhood indoctrination. Now get to work. Mankind has been waiting for evidence for more than 2000 years.
