Fired U.S. Attorneys: Bush Administration 'Turned The Justice Department Into The Laughingstock Of The Country'

Us Attorney Scandal

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Five of the federal prosecutors whose firings in 2006 sparked an investigation into President George W. Bush's Justice Department blamed their ouster Monday on politics in the department, which one of them said became a "laughingstock."

The five former U.S. attorneys, among nine who were let go, appeared together during a forum in Little Rock.

They blamed former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' intense political loyalty to Bush for costing them their jobs.

"There were a number of people who made terrible decisions," said John McKay, a former U.S. attorney for the western district of Washington state. "They turned the Justice Department into the laughingstock of the country."

Prosecutors closed a two-year investigation into the firings in July with a conclusion that the Justice Department's actions were inappropriately political but not criminal. The episode contributed to Gonzales' resignation.

Other ousted prosecutors participating in the forum were Bud Cummins of Arkansas, Paul Charlton of Arizona, Carol Lam of California and David Iglesias of New Mexico.

The forum, held by the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law, comes as the man who temporarily replaced Cummins seeks a congressional seat in central Arkansas.

Skip Rutherford, the Clinton School dean, said the event had been in the works for several months and was not related to the election.

Tim Griffin, now the Republican nominee for the 2nd Congressional District, was named interim U.S. attorney for eastern Arkansas after Cummins' firing. Griffin is running against Democratic state Sen. Joyce Elliott, who attended Monday's forum.

Democratic Congressman Vic Snyder, who represents the 2nd District and is retiring at the end of his term, also attended. Cummins, who ran unsuccessfully against Snyder for the 2nd District seat in 1996, praised the retiring congressman and Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor for their support during the controversy.

Griffin worked in the White House office of political affairs during Bush's presidency, and Bush adviser Karl Rove has said he backed Griffin for the attorney post. Griffin resigned the prosecutor post after six months.

Cummins, a Republican, did not mention Griffin by name during the forum and later declined to say whether he would support Griffin in the November election. Cummins suggested that the firings would not have occurred when John Ashcroft led the Justice Department.

"Once (Ashcroft's team) left, they just sent people over from the White House to fill these jobs... There was no grown-up there to say, 'Whoa, this doesn't work,'" Cummins said.

Speaking to reporters afterward, Cummins declined to say whether he believed Griffin was qualified for the prosecutor post. Griffin has said he respects the decision to not file any charges in the firings, and has said the controversy was mishandled by the Justice Department.

Iglesias said the scandal was about preventing politics from interfering with the Justice Department, not just about the prosecutor firings.

"This is not about us losing our jobs," Iglesias said. "This is about one of the premiere institutions of our country being threatened and surviving that."

Forget the fired AG's Bush made the Justice Department a laughing stock and the American people knew it from day one.  His first appointee was a failed senator more concerned with draping the breasts of statues and writing laws than persuing justice while his second was a lawyer who helped the Gov beat a wrap back in Texas.
Bush overlooked the fact that of all the Cabinet Departments Justice is the  Read More...

If Alberto Gonzales had his way, we would have amnesia-- forgive and foget! Ha!

History doesn't fade in a news cycle or two even though a lot of people in the media think that way.

In an early post I attempted to describe the real danger that was posed by the Gonzales' firings:

The fact that the majority of these Bush appointed political hacks still serve as U.S. attorneys in the Obama administration speaks volumes about President Obama. These people serve at the pleasure of the president. Their performance or philosophy must please President Obama or they would have been asked to tender their resignations. This is one place where it is appropraite to judge the president by the company he keeps. He has total control over who he appoints especially to this post. Cleaning house and replacing all these right wing moles and aparachniks is not difficult and should have been done on day one of the new administration. Mr. President, we deserve better.

So you think everyone Bush appointed were hacks? All of them? The govt is mighty large.

The investigations (that they did finally have) revealed some but certainly not all.

You think Bob Gates is a GOP Hack?

The competent U.S. attorneys who refused to go along with the Bush junta politicization of the DOJ were fired. They were replaced by party hacks. Those who kept their jobs were hacks to begin with. Bob Gates is not relevant to this discussion. As far as I know he serves as Secretary of Defense, not a U.S. attorney.

Fired U.S. Attorneys: Bush Administration 'Turned The Justice Department Into The Laughingstock Of The Country'

Actually that is FAR FROM THE TRUTH, More like a deception or outright lie. Everywhere I went over the past two weeks, 4800 miles and 10 states, few people were laughing at all. Lot of swearing, lot of finger pointing, lot of anger and hate, lot of indifference..........but no laughing matters.

People want to believe but we have bcome such a superficial society. Our beliefs amount to our bank account, our belief in family, little substantive about the country and the world, disdain for government and its regulators. NO ONE WAS LAUGHING except when they (people) described certain individuals and systems, when they were associating with each other and maybe a sports event.

I was in Casper, Wyoming (vacation to Colorado from Florida) last Wednesday evening for dinner. Absolutely packed house and the tenseness of the crowd was palpable. Little celebrating in the bar during the ball game. Normal chatter but there was little laughter. It was very sad.

Way to go Washington and Wall Street. You are effectively dismantling and disabling a country,. its systems and relegating its citizens to 'zombies'. When 100 people cannot laugh, enjoy each others company and there is little banter around its tables of restaurants everywhere..........I never thought I would see that in my lifetime.

While fools pretend that Dubya was sharp enough to be America's first "decider" all by his lonesome, inquiring minds know that he got help and/or special puppet orders elsewhere. When you get past the smokescreen of political policy, you'll find that forces ruling us from behind the scenes are not Americans. Do a little web truth serum research and stop playing the false flag blame game of the fixed and divisive two party system.

Funny and rather scary to think of Ashcroft as the "adult supervision" that apparently kept things on somewhat of an even keel.

Just add it to the list of horrible things that went down during the Bush administration. This one isn't that bad compared to the torture and rendition and starting a war based on lies, but it's still bad nonetheless. And none of them will ever pay will they?

Absolutely I agree 100%. Our system of justice was broken and it will take several political cycles to repair.

The entire Dubya presidency was one huge laughingstock! People like these U.S. attorneys were only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to that President and his administration ruining people’s lives. Let me count the ways …….. And while what happened to the U.S. attorneys was a shame and surely a travesty, they are smart enough to move on with their lives and accomplish something positive.
