Gulf Oil Spill: Hurricanes Could Carry Toxins As Far As New England (VIDEO)

WATCH: Hurricanes Could Carry Gulf Oil Spill Toxins As Far As New England

In this video from National Geographic, scientists allege that toxic hydrocarbons lingering in the Gulf of Mexico from BP's oil spill could potentially be carried as far north as New England by a hurricane.

Geochemist Siddhartha Mitra has undertaken a long-term study to assess the effects of hydrocarbons traveling through precipitation and storms. Mitra says it's an unusual study, as scientists have primarily been concerned with the transfer of pollutants from land into the ocean, and not the other way around.

According to Mitra, not only toxic hydrocarbons from the Gulf oil spill but the chemical dispersants used, as well, could be carried far inland by storms.
