Holiday Travel

Yes, we just finished celebrating Labor Day, but it's time to start thinking about holiday plans, and in particular, purchasing a plane ticket if you need to fly home. ABC News spoke with Rick Seaney, co-founder of FareCompare.com to get tips on when to buy for Thanksgiving and Christmas time.

Seaney told ABC that there is "no reason to discount flights when planes are full," so airlines will be less likely to offer discounts this year. Don't wait around until the last minute; book by mid-October for both Thanksgiving and Christmas.

He gave other sound tips, but our favorite nugget of info was the specific date and time to buy airline tickets: Tuesday at 3pm EST. He reasoned that airfare sales get posted on Monday morning, and the airlines scramble to get the lowest fares through Tuesday morning, so by Tuesday afternoon the cheapest tickets are available across the board.

We have booked several trips in the past couple weeks and my forecast is for flights around the holiday to climb even higher. In July I booked SEA - CUN $576 for Dec15th and thought it was high. I just checked today and its $650+.
