Martha Stewart Struggles After Move To Cable

"The Martha Stewart Show," which premiered exclusively on the Hallmark Channel on Sept. 13, attracted only an average of 199,000 viewers in its initial airing, down 75 percent from its fifth season premiere in national syndication last year, according to Nielsen Media Research. Two new shows -- including one also starring Ms. Stewart's daughter, Alexis -- had similarly anemic starts...the disappointing start raises a flurry of questions. Is this what Oprah Winfrey has to look forward to when she moves to cable next year? Are the ratings a signal of waning interest in Ms. Stewart? Or are Hallmark and its hard-to-find spot on the dial the problem? Was the partnership a mistake?
