University Of Florida Professor Fired For Inappropriate Comment

University of Florida professor of food and resource economics Timothy Taylor was fired on Friday for sexually inappropriate comments he made during class. According to the Gainesville Sun, Taylor commented that Latin American women dressed more provocatively than American women, prompting his termination.

As Ray Huffaker, food resource economics department chair, told Taylor:

The University's investigation finds that your comments had the purpose or effect of embarrassing female students and, even after the opportunities you had to change your improper behavior, you persist in making inappropriate comments of a sexual nature

.

The Independent Florida Alligator reports that Taylor had been twice suspended for sexual harassment during his 30 years at the university, and that several students complained about this and other incidents to various members of the department.

Taylor maintains that his comment had educational merit. He told the Gainesville Sun, "If we can't go into a classroom and challenge people's beliefs and challenge them to be critical thinkers and maybe feel uncomfortable sometimes, how are we going to get them to think outside the box?"
