Meg Whitman Slammed By Detroit Mayor For 'Awful' Comment

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Detroit mayor's office on Thursday sharply criticized California Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman for comparing Fresno to Detroit and calling it "awful."

Karen Dumas, a spokeswoman for Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, said in a statement Thursday to The Associated Press that the billionaire candidate should focus instead on investing in communities such as Detroit and Fresno.

"Fresno, like Detroit, shares the reality of being an urban city that continue(s) to bear the burden of a Wall Street meltdown," Dumas said. "Perhaps Ms. Whitman is better served in making investments in communities like Detroit and Fresno rather than profiting at their expense."

Whitman, the former chief executive officer of eBay, once served on the board of investment firm Goldman Sachs.

Whitman made the comment Tuesday in an interview with the editorial board of the San Jose Mercury News, which reported her statement the next day.

"Fresno looks like Detroit. It's awful," she said.

Whitman, appearing on a Fresno talk-radio show Thursday, said she was talking about the tough economy, which has hit some communities especially hard.

"What I was trying to communicate was Fresno, the Central Valley, has been very hard hit. As hard hit as places like Detroit. So that's what I was trying to communicate," she said.

"Listen, I want people to really understand that what is so heartbreaking is the high unemployment rate in Fresno. Fresno is a great town, I love the Central Valley."

The city of Fresno, population 500,000, had an unemployment rate in August of 14.5 percent, 2 percentage points higher than the statewide rate.

In Detroit, population 900,000, the metro area had an official unemployment rate of 14.4 percent in August, down from 15.2 percent in July, although estimates indicate that about one in three adults are actually jobless.

The Central Valley has been crucial to Whitman's campaign strategy in the race against Democrat Jerry Brown. The inland stretches of California lean Republican compared with the more populated coastal regions.

In addition to rallying conservatives in the Central Valley, Whitman has been targeting more conservative Democrats and independents in the region, hoping her pitch about job creation will resonate.

She has a Friday fundraiser in Fresno with Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and is scheduled to debate Brown Oct. 2 at California State University, Fresno.

Whitman's comments also drew a rebuke from Mike Thompson, the Detroit Free Press editorial cartoonist. He called the remarks "galling" in a blog posted Thursday to the paper's website.

He said as a titan of the corporate world and a member of the Goldman Sachs board, Whitman helped create the conditions that led to the economic meltdown. Before heading eBay, Whitman was an executive at a number of blue-chip companies, including Procter & Gamble, Hasbro and Walt Disney.

"Two big reason(s) for the decline of the city that she insulted are Wall Street bamboozling and outsourcing – two things that the billionaire Republican Whitman has excelled at in the past," he wrote.

Whitman's comment also drew criticism from state Sen. Dean Florez, a Democrat from the Central Valley town of Shafter.

"I don't think Ms. Whitman recognizes how her comments stigmatize Fresno and the folks who live here," Florez said in a statement.

Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin, a Republican who has endorsed Whitman, came to her defense.

She called Whitman "a strong friend of Fresno and the Central Valley ... I know for a fact that Meg does not think Fresno is 'awful,' but she does think Fresno's unemployment rate is 'awful.'"

Meg Whitman thinks: "Fresno is a great town". That's why she lives in a multimillion dollar home in Atherton, alongside rock stars, venture capitalists, and television stars. Unlike Fresno, Atherton is overwhelmingly white. The percentage of Atherton residents who are african-american is less than one percent. (That one percent is probably comprised of Willy Mays and Jerry Rice, who both live there.) The percentage of Hispanic residents is under 3%. I am convinced that Meg cares about the poor and unemployed, just as much as any billionaire Republican does.

Question #1. What is the most left-wing state in the Union?
Answer: Vermont

Question #2. What is the whitest state in the Union?
Answer: Vermont

Maybe Howard Dean should invite some CA minorities to come and live in his state.

Oh, for cryin' out loud. She meant that both cities were ravaged by the recession, not that both are the pits. Though they are. But Fresno is worse, because it's hot.

Maybe she'll deign to fly a plane or helicopter over those "awful" areas and glance out the window with dignified concern as did Bush in New Orleans after Katrina. My, my, look at the troubles of those poor commoners! Give me another tax break and it will all change like magic!

Thank you Mayor Dave Bing for reminding Californians about the role Meg Whitman played in the Wall St meltdown and sorry for the harm she and others played in your City,s financial woes.
No wonder the founder of E-Bay "cannot bring himself to support Meg Whitman" and neither can the customers and employees who have sued Meg for things OTHER than violence

I love concerned damage control.  The concern comes from someone who probably can't even believe she has to actually RUN.  The fact that $120,000,000+ later, she's basically even with a man who only started running 2 weeks ago has GOT to be infuriating on her part.  Jerry's crossed, what, MAYBE $4-5M by now, and most of that was since Labor Day.

It doesn't take an MBA to see who the true fiscal conservative really is.  He'll be glad to have his old office back.

Furthermore, I won't stop criticizing MW until she's not elected. We've got a long way to go in this election cycle. Much can happen. She's very close to having this job. Nothing good can come of her in this position.

A report on Yahoo this morning that NJ governor confronted a "heckler" at a "townhall" meeting yesterday when the heckler demanded that Whitman address questions from the audience. The "heckler" was called out by the governor of NJ as part of the problem in America for raising his voice. Afterward, Meg is heard to thank the governor.
Now she's comparing Detroit and Fresno. Why not just infer that the good people of both places are really losers?
I won't be voting for Meg. I don't like her ideas about moving the state "forward", and given these couple of incidents, she's a crappy politican.

The heckler was Ed Buck, a gay Republican from Arizona who led the recall of Ed Meacham. Oops.

What! did her chauffeur drive through the Central Valley for a show and tell session? Cause she sure hasn’t spent time there. Sorry, Ms. Whitman, that California’s working class doesn’t live up to your expectations.

Well maybe Fresno is awful. Maybe the city needs to wake up and clean up their act!

AH-HA! See Meg, ol'gal, not everyone in California can afford a mansion in Atherton. Fresno has its problems with crime and unemployment, just like Oakland, L.A., San Francisco, San Jose, Hayward, Richmond, Pittsburgh, Redding, Yuba City, Sacramento, Concord, San Diego, National City, etc.....Get the point, Meg? No, not the one on your head. Every city and town in CA is afftected by crime and unemployment. Your views on Fresno can be seen on your views on California as a whole. So please, just......go away.
