Shelley Berkley: Help For The 99ers After Current Benefits Reauthorized

First Posted: 09/23/10 02:44 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:50 PM ET

Rep Shelley Berkley Speaks At The Nnss Ceremony

Rep. Shelley Berkley has introduced legislation to help the "99ers" -- people who haven't found work after exhausting all 99 weeks of unemployment benefits available in some states -- but her first priority is preserving those 99 weeks.

"For people that have not exhausted their 99 weeks, the latest extension of unemployment bennies will come due at the end of November. That to me is first and foremost," said the Nevada Democrat in an interview with HuffPost. "Then I would like to see another tier created, which is what my bill does."

Berkley's bill would give the unemployed an additional 20 weeks of benefits in states where the unemployment rate is above 10 percent. Nevada's unemployment rate is 14.4 percent -- highest in the nation.

Over the summer, Congress spent 50 days fighting over a reauthorization of the current four tiers of federally-funded jobless aid as Republicans and some Democrats objected to the deficit cost of the benefits. The reauthorization was ultimately approved, but only though November, at which time the fight will probably happen again. It won't be easy for Berkley and Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), who introduced a similar bill in the upper chamber, to win much support.

"It's very tough, but it's a whole lot tougher to be unemployed and to have rent to pay and food to put on the table for your kids to eat," said Berkley. "There's some sort of misconception here that if somehow you don't extend unemployment benefits, that poor people are going to disappear. They don't. They end up on welfare, they end up on food stamps, they end up homeless and they end up desperate, so the idea that they'll just go away is ludicrous. It doesn't happen."

Many Republicans (and some Democrats) have suggested that the extraordinary amount of aid has discouraged the unemployed from looking for work and worsened the unemployment situation, an idea that is very popular on the Wall Street Journal's editorial page even though it's not very true.

"I think that is the most insulting and absurd statement that they could possibly make and how insensitive for somebody to be bringing home a six-figure paycheck and begrudging those who have not enough money to keep their head above water," said Berkley. "I think maybe they ought to talk to some of these unemployed people before they pass judgment like that.

Which presidents had the longest unemployment benefits extension?

1 Ronald Reagan -REPUBLICAN 3.5 years of unemployment.
2 Gerald Ford -REPUBLICAN 3.2 years of unemployment.
3 George Bush2004-REPUBLICAN 3 years of unemployment.

Yet like the hypocrites they are they call it welfare when Obama wants it to be longer than 1.9 years! Even though they where not dealing with the worst collapse since WWII. They are doing this to sabotage the recovery, to get elected in
November.

Our country is demonstrating that global capitalism has failed. Yet, no one in politics seems to realize the situation, nor want to fix it. Quite a discouraging future. The 99ers know pain, but those feeding off them are next in the grinder.

It will be interesting to see how the wealthy east coast elite fares in the dead cold of winter this year without any safety net in place for the familys they have thrown out of work and out of home.

You want a TRUE sign of who has the power in the country? Christmas is coming, DON'T BUY A DAMN THING -- talk to your kids, tell them this is a show of American Solidarity for the average American (which they are). That we will stand firm against the Ruling Class and take back our country.

We need to Buy American and support Americans. The Small Business Bill was payed for by closing the tax incentives and deductions for Companies that ship jobs over seas. Another lovely gift from Do nothing Know nothing Bush. President Obama and the Democrats have passed 8 bills to help small business'.

Make Corporations Pay
12:59 AM on 09/24/2010
The Make It In America bill would give community banks 30 billion (corporate banks not involved) and would be expected to generate 300 billion in circulating revenue. Paid for by ending subsidies from big oil, it would force federal offices to only purchase products made in the USA. But the GOP said no, because that was unfair to the lobbyists they represent.

I did not know about that.Thank you. Ending subsidies to big oil is the key to why the Republicans wont stand behind it. Having the federal Govt. Buy American sounds like a no braine r and would be a huge boon. They said if the Govt. insisted on fuel efficent cars or hybrids the cost for them would be reduced dramatically and make them viable for so many more people. That would mean less gas and oil though.Sense a theme? I emailed some companies I buy from and told them I won't buy from them anymore unless they make more things here. I got some whinning emails back and some crickets....Ed Shultz website has some made in America companies on it. Also I called Susquahanna Glass the owner asked a respectful question of Pres.Obama on the CNBC news conference. They make etched glass in Penn for 100 years. I am going to purchase gifts from them if I need them. I also heard the tax cuts explaned on MSNBC. Did you know that eveyone will pay the same rate for the first 250,000 they make? Only money above and beyond that will be taxed at the higher rate. The Republicans also have fuzzy math when it comes what counts as a small business.I don't know all the details so I don't want to say anything yet.Keith Olbermann had a whole segment on it.Big business' count !!!!!

But you'd never know it from reading a newspaper or listening to the nightly news, would you/ Small businesses need to help lead the way this fall in sharpening the differences between them and the multinational and uber corporations who like to give lip service to being in the "same league". John Edwards was right about their being two Americas....even when it comes to defining the "economy'" . There's the one economy where the scoreboard is the stock exhange ticker and corporate bottom lines but there's the other one where small businesses and American families have a lot more in common and define a whole other kind of "bottom line".
Kind of seems we should start talking about that one a whole lot more....Thanks, by the way, for mentioning the other bills for small businesses.

I saw something the other day that sums up this whole thing for me. A few weeks ago Rachel Maddow showed a tape from 2008. It was John Boehner on the floor of the Congress choking up and BEGGING his fellow Republicans to vote for the Wall Street Bank Bailout Bill under Bush. He actually almost shed a tear!!! For BANKS and Wall Street . Billions and Billions of our hard earned money 99ers money included. To make sure the banks and bankers didn't loose everything. Billions added to the Deficit. But we can't help American Citizens that need a leg up?/?? Disgraceful. Call your Reps. and tell them to help the 99ers. I am not one.I'm just an American

Maybe the GOP would rather pay to ship us overseas, where they shipped our jobs?

Out of sight, out of mind. We're not voting for them anyway, so they could care less.

GOP strategy: The more people on the streets, the fewer registered to vote.

Low turnout favors GOP.

Ed Shultz brought the issues of The 99ers to light for me. It is heart breaking to me to think about people good people that have worked their entire lives living like this. It is equally heartbreaking to hear all the vitriol and scorn heaped on these Americans. Vote Democratic in November and we will have a better chance at helping the 99ers. We may all be 99ers sooner than we think if we don't. Look at the New Contract on America. Missiles for everyone....Bomb Iran... Privatize Social Security....Defund Healthcare ONE NATION MARCH OCT 2nd WASHINGTON DC
06:11 PM on 09/23/2010
I hope millions of people show up on Oct 2nd. Like those citizens in Bell California they got out enforce and they did not stop until Sacramento law makers got from behind their desk and starting investigating, and you can bet those Bell citizens are watching every move of the law makers to make sure that justice prevails!!! This shipping jobs over seas and throwing people off unemployment and then calling people lazy is criminal. We need the same kind of activism nation wide that the Bell citizens are doing in their small city!!!

I absolutly agree. They just said that one Republican voted for the Small Business Bill in the House. Tax cuts for small business to hire people and buy equipment fully paid for. One Republican !!! Yet they staged a photo op at a small business to roll out their contract. Full funding of Missle Defense in the contract but no help for 99ers !!!!! They are so full of themselves right now they can't help themselves. I think any arrogant Rep should be voted out. I called and made a huge stink when Charlie Rangel was making it about him instead of the unemployed. His office hung up on me. We need to call email and yell
