Eddie Long, Atlanta Bishop, Accused Of Sexual Abuse By 4th Male Parishioner

GREG BLUESTEIN   09/25/10 12:27 AM ET   AP

Eddie Long

ATLANTA — A fourth young male member of Bishop Eddie Long's megachurch is suing the prominent pastor, claiming Long coerced him into a sexual relationship.

The lawsuit was filed by Spencer LeGrande, a member of New Birth Charlotte. New Birth Charlotte is a satellite church run by Long in Charlotte, N.C. The lawsuit said Long told LeGrande "I will be your dad" and invited the 17-year-old to journey to Kenya with him in July 2005. LeGrande said that Long gave him a sleeping pill on that trip and that the two engaged in sexual acts.

The Associated Press does not typically identify alleged victims of impropriety, but attorney B.J. Bernstein has said all four of the men who filed lawsuits consented to being identified publicly.

The lawsuit claims Long convinced LeGrande that "engaging in a sexual relationship was a healthy component of his spiritual life," the complaint said.

LeGrande, now 22, said the two continued their relationship on a February 2006 trip to South Africa and after he moved to Atlanta at Long's encouragement. He said that Long also instructed him not to have girlfriends, but that he pulled away in the spring of 2009 after he became "disillusioned." He moved back to Charlotte in October, it said.

The complaint, filed in DeKalb State Court, comes after three other men filed lawsuits on Tuesday and Wednesday saying they were 17- and 18-year-old members of the church when they say Long abused his spiritual authority to seduce them with cars, money, clothes, jewelry, international trips and access to celebrities.

Long is expected on Sunday to deliver the first public message since the men accused him of having sexual relationships with them. He has vehemently denied any wrongdoing through his lawyer and a Twitter posting.

Bishop's attorney, Craig Gillen, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment Friday.

Well, this settles it. He denied it on Twitter so he must be innocent. Palin would give it a big thumbs up.

When these prosperity preachers get wealthy, they feel powerful and invincible. And sometimes they stop believing in the only reason they became believers in the first place: God's wrath. They stop believing in God but they remain in the pulpit because of the profiteering. And they maintain the facade, for they know nobody's gonna get them, least of all a god that is not there waiting to inflict punishment. So they cintinue with their orgy until they get caught which is when they deny the allegations and mumble something about their faith being strong (liars!) and able to sustain them through this difficult period. Their congregation either becomes woefully mute or defends his honor with their favorite bible verse that asks who can "cast the first stone."

Regardless if he steps down or not ...It seems highly appropriate to have independent, professional counselors on hand for a few weeks to help his congregants cope with this major betrayal of human trust and the ensuing feelings of confusion, lost and disappointment.

I believe the allegations are 100% true.

Also, I don't see why people attend a church with a pastor so flamboyant and materialistic.

He drives a Bentley? Who does this guy think he is? P. Diddy? Gross!

Even if the congregants are on their last dime, they're brainwashed enough to feel a sense of pride everytime the Bentley goes by. They are really mentally ill, and the bishop is as delusional as Abraham the herdsman was. Many of the evangelical fire-breathing pastors are actually mentally disturbed.

Wow this is devastating to many Atlantians. This minister is revered in that area. He has a mega church with many very prominent members. Four young men all with the same story is hard to disbelieve. I really feel for his family, he is a husband and the father of four. I will not form an opinion until I know more, out of respect for his ministry and his family. He has helped so many people in Atlanta. This is very sad.

His aura is the biggest problem. He probably took full advantage of that. I hope his ministry is supportive to the victims of his behavior.

If his "church" has any shame, it will begin to denounce its own horrible anti-gay sentiment, which is the cause of this tragedy. It boxed in the minister as much as those he touched, and will force him into prison before it's over. Four affidavits are devastating.

Four affidavits are, I suspect, just the tip of the iceberg. More will be filed in the days (hours?) to come. If true, I hope this event will force the black community to confront its
deep and irrational fear of homosexuality, and that yet another bright light will be unleashed on the hopelessly dysfunctional relationship between sex and religion.
