The 7 Funniest Lines From Colbert's Testimony To Congress (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 09/24/10 02:37 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:50 PM ET

Earlier this morning, Stephen Colbert testified before Congress during the "Protecting America's Harvest" hearing. Colbert, who recently worked on a corn and vegetable farm for a day, testified in character on the dependency of our food supply on farm workers, and to debunk the myth that undocumented farm workers take away jobs from Americans. Although the venue was serious, Colbert still got in some really hilarious lines, especially during his opening statement. We selected our 7 favorite quotes for you below with accompanying images from his testimony. Vote for your favorite!

They spent how long trying to keep steroids out of baseball? I think we can afford to have a comedian testify even if in character for most of it for ten minutes.

Because it is satire he can tell them what they are doing to their face and have them reach the conclusions he would want them to reach without preaching. His out of character stuff was worth all his character stuff and while it doesn't belong here, it is worth hearing.

I loved SC's testimony. It was painfully funny. He is smart enough to know that what he was doing was going to evoke strong reactions that were all over the map.

Bottom line....he made his point.

Folks who believe Colbert's shtick is 'genius' and 'brilliant' have not read enough Mencken.

And citizens who get so much buzz over a comic goofing for a congressional committee are part of the problem...

So, congress let a comedian in to testify and mock them for their own amusement? And this is news? I think Colbert is brilliant, but mocking congress to their face while he's in character is beyond absurd to me. I wonder if this whole thing was set up just for their own amusement?

What is absurd is that many in Congress, especially the Republicans in the Senate, are so intent on obstructing anything that Obama wants to accomplish that they won't even pass a bill to cover the health care costs of 9/11 responders who are dying of painful respiratory ailments brought on from their heroic work at Ground Zero.

I would bet that Stephen Colbert's one day as a farm worker gives him a much greater understanding of agricultural workplace issues than is possessed by any of those Representatives who decried his appearance.

He should keep to his day job, testify as a citizen not a comedian... next they'll have Lindsay Lohan testifying on behalf of responsible young adults

I really like Colbert, but this country doesn't need him to make idiots of Congress. They do that quite well on their own.

The "he killed a man back in Ireland" is the best line. Well, until i googled what a Brazilian was.

So let those of us who didn't google "Brazilian" in on the joke, ok?

Nah, trust us, you're better off googling it in the privacy of your own... google.
