CAUGHT: Stewart Shows GOP's 'New' Pledge Exactly The Same As The Old (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post

Last night on "The Daily Show," Jon Stewart lambasted the GOP for their new "Pledge to America," a promise of fresh, new ideas that sound identical to the Republican rhetoric of the last 20 years.

Stewart began by remembering two years ago when Republican senators previously pledged to make the GOP a "party of new ideas," trying things like forum website America Speaking Out, and other ideas that ultimately failed. Now, with midterms around the corner, Republicans have are trying to reinvent themselves once more, promising things like reduced spending, smaller government, permanent tax cuts, and other things that sound oddly familiar.

"Your fresh new ideas," Stewart said, "sound slightly - I'm sorry, did I say slightly? - sound EXACTLY like your old ones."

As he does best, Stewart worked the clips and showed side by side comparisons of 2010 Republicans pledging to do the same things as those of the last 20 years.

"This isn't even a sequel," Stewart said. "This is a shot-by-shot remake!"

Paul Krugman who, even if you don't agree with him, knows how to add says this about the "Pledge"

"In essence, what they say is, “Deficits are a terrible thing. Let’s make them much bigger.†The document repeatedly condemns federal debt — 16 times, by my count. But the main substantive policy proposal is to make the Bush tax cuts permanent, which independent estimates say would add about $3.7  Read More...

“Five surgeons are discussing who were the best patients to operate on.

The first surgeon says, 'I like to see Accountants on my operating table
because when you open them up, everything inside is numbered.'

The second responds, 'Yeah, but you should try Electricians! Everything
inside them is colour-coded.'

The third surgeon says, 'No, I really think Librarians are the best;
everything inside them is in alphabetical order...'

The fourth surgeon chimes in, 'You know I like Construction Workers. Those
guys always understand when you have a few parts left over at the end, and
when the job takes longer than you said it would.'

But the fifth surgeon shut them all up when he observed, 'You're all wrong.
Republicans are the easiest to operate on. They have no guts, no
heart, no b alls, pre-programmed brains and there are only two moving
parts - the mouth and the waste management hole - and they are interchangeable'.â€

Really? And there are Americans who are buying the fluff? How easy it is to spew out a list of never-ending promises but have they yet to say HOW? How to cut spending and balance the budget and get rid of the deficit (thank you GWB for the Iraq War and Wall Street/banking deregulation)? How? And not only are Americans buying the fluff and admiring the Emperor's clothing but they can't even remember the horror of 8 years of Bush policies! Incredible!

"We pledge to honor our families, traditional marriage and life" = We can't believe a judge appointed by Regan ruled proposition 8 unconstitutional! Give us the power and we'll do our best to provide you with the selective constitution you want, you know the one that does not apply to minorities... And you just as well put the prefix pro in front of life, because that's exactly what we mean. We vow to hold a cell that's divided twice in higher regard than sick children.

"Real tort reform" = You know, tort reform. Remember when America wanted better health care? The lobbyists told us to say tort reform was the answer so much we actually started to believe it! We are sorry about you going bankrupt when insurance providers drop you but the insurance lobbyists are really helping us out this election cycle. We hope you understand.

"Don't spend more than you take in. Stop out of control spending." = We have no problems giving billions to defense industries but the government is stepping over the line when they try to spend any amount to improve the quality of life for the average American.

I understand there are many Americans right now in dire straits but hope that we can remember how we got here. People should be angry about what has been done to this country but if you expect it to be fixed in 2 years you are not angry, you are simply mad...

Well now, It appears that John Stewart is OK with the failed programs and policies emanating out of the Obama administration. If we return to what we know works how can this be bad. The congress has been in democratic hands since January 2007 at a time when the Dow was hovering around 14000. It hasn't taken them long to turn that to a little more than half what it was. Even though it has been rising unemployment has remained high and is likely to stay high for the foreseeable future. The spending under the democratic congress has been so inflationary that should we recover from this all prices will be higher. With wages stuck and increasing only for minimum wage employees in places like Nevada where it is mandated by law keeping up will be impossible.

so you attribute no cause to the current situation to say, GW taking office, turning a surplus into a deficit, going to war, twice, not paying for those wars, and enacting tax cuts to further deplete and turn the Federal Governments balance sheet into the red and cutting reducing regulation to create a bubble. Dem congress comes into power in 2007, gets filibustered more than in any other time in the history of the country. Wow, just wow.

The national debt has risen every year since you have been alive, obviously. It is proven that tax cuts have always been responsible for more revenue. When GW took office the dot com boom was failing and add to the the 9/11 attacks that drove the market way down. Bush did what was necessary to respond to the terrorists and had public approval ratings hovering around 90%. It resulted in the market eclipsing 14,000 until just after the democrats resumed control of congress.

I understand your fervor, but those ideas are the same ideas that banrupted us under Reagan and Bush 2. Someday I might vote R. again, but this has been their failed plan for 30 yrs. now. I am guessing you are not a mathmetician, but the GOP numbers are impossible. Somehow you think they can extend billionaire tax cuts and balance the budget Well Im here to tell you that anybody with 8th grade math skills will tell you it is impossible and disingenuous to lead the less educated down this path AGAIN. It's simple math. P.S John Beoner> refuses to eliminate earmarks, the biggest promise Teabaggers latched onto. Our parties are using us and the difference is you don't know it.

The media is very scared of Stewert and Colbert. I watch them attack these 2 everyday, not realizing that most Americans know when a pol comes on a show, lies, and the hosts just don't call them on it. Jon Stewart ruined Cramer on cnbc, for that fact he ruined cnbc itself. A second look at the CNBC flap jaws clearly shows a network in bed with industry. The biggest frauds are Maria Barteroma, Dylan Ratigan, and Rick Santelli. The last 2 are fake populists and Maria prostitutes her morals for ceo interviews and tax cuts for her billionaire husband. People need to factcheck everything they hear on cable news, Im not just talking Fox, but all 3 networks. Even MTP has become factless. I remember when a pol lied, a real journalist would say "no no" that's not true and here's why. Now I watch Mournig Joe (comedic value) and I swear I have more facts than the hosts and most of the guests. Dylan Ratigan is the biggest fake of all, just watch him for a week and watch him contradict himself on a daily basis. My latest favorite example was a segment on Chinese workers being worked to death, his outrage was astonishing, 2 days later he was wondering why our regulations were not as free as Chinas..... Then he spends the rest of the week screaming how we don't have enough regulation on industry. These people work for corporate interests & r rich

We all know what the definition of insanity is, don't we? I have many conservative friends; good people all. But I cannot fathom the steadfast faith in the myths and unworkable neo-Libertarian idealism. Then again, most of them have an unshakable religious faith that I cannot fathom either.

I can not fathom the faith in government that liberals have

King of the oneliners. To say "liberals" have faith in Govt. is a falsehood perpetuated for the non thinkers i.e. You... You seem to only parrot what you have heard with such great faith( yes your faith in Republican government) is as mindless as you accuse liberals of being. I laugh when I hear this spoonfed line of attack because the Republican base and the Tea Party eat up Fox News, Drudge, Forbes, and most sadly your politicians. You have just as much faith or more in Govt. than any "liberal".

It's not that we Republican's don't have a conscience or long term memory, sweetheart...now if you'll just sign the divorce papers where I highlighted, yeah, right there. And here. Just a couple more. We really need to speed things along dear. Okay, I'll move the intraveneous chemo drugs over there...right, now you can move your arm better. Fantastic. You need to date this. Sorry, hun, but I've got dinner reservations for 8:00 pm and the fiance is in the Bentley. You know, we don't want her picking at the custom leather with those long nails. Those 20 year olds are a little impatient, don't you think? Last page. Okay, here. Initial here. Okay. Okay. You're no longer Mrs. Gingrich...alright. Okay. See ya when I see ya! Bye.

The Republican party thinks the citizenry of America are a bunch of idiots who don't remember all of the awful things they have put us through in the recent past and want to do it to us all over again.

The answer to this is for everyone to go vote, but NOT vote for them in November. This might send them a message. Or maybe they really just don't care what we think (more likely).

The problem is that Americans have the attention span of a nat. We DON’T remember what happened the last time the Republicans were in charge, much less what happened when W. was appointed to relieve us of our twin vices of peace and prosperity.

The word is spelled Gnat. Some of us DO remember but that number is dwarfed by people who have given up caring or trying. Also there are the brainwashed Republican voters to contend with as well. Its an uphill battle.

Not a bunch of Idiots but a carefully calculated number of idiot (and fewer than you might think) will have us do it all over again.
