Eddie Long, Georgia Megachurch Pastor, Vows To Fight Sex Scandal Allegations

ERRIN HAINES   09/26/10 10:14 PM ET   AP

Eddie Long

LITHONIA, Ga. — Casting himself as the Bible's ultimate underdog, Bishop Eddie Long went before thousands of faithful supporters at his megachurch Sunday and promised to fight accusations that he lured four young men into sexual relationships.

"I feel like David against Goliath. But I got five rocks, and I haven't thrown one yet," Long said in his first public remarks since his accusers filed lawsuits last week claiming he abused his "spiritual authority." He stopped short of denying the allegations but implied he was wronged by them.

"I have never in my life portrayed myself as a perfect man. But I am not the man that's being portrayed on the television. That's not me. That is not me," he said.

Long's brief addresses to the congregation at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church were met with thunderous applause and an outpouring of support during services that were equal parts part rock concert and pep rally. The sanctuary was nearly filled to its 10,000-seat capacity for both the 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. services. Many lined up two hours before the doors of the church opened.

Long became one of the country's most powerful independent church leaders over the last 20 years, turning a suburban Atlanta congregation of 150 to a 25,000-member powerhouse with a $50 million cathedral and a roster of parishioners that includes athletes, entertainers and politicians. And there was almost no sign Sunday that his flock wanted to turn him away.

Followers prayed, sang and embraced one another as they rallied around their senior pastor. Wearing a cream-colored suit as he strode into the church sanctuary hand-in-hand with his wife, Vanessa, Long paused to soak in the adoration.

During the second service, however, one young man in a blue shirt stood up and shouted: "We want to know the truth, man!" He was quickly escorted out and did not return.

After the service, many expressed unwavering support for their leader.

"We know and we love Bishop," said Annie Cannon, a seven-year member of New Birth. "We love our place of worship. My son goes to school here. We do everything here."

It is unclear whether Long faces any risk of being removed by his church's board, but the allegations at the very least guarantee months of scrutiny as the lawsuits move forward.

Long is a father of four who has been an outspoken opponent of gay marriage and whose church has counseled gay members to become straight. Two young men say he groomed them for sexual relationships when they were enrolled in the church's LongFellows Youth Academy, a program that taught teens about sexual and financial discipline. Two other young men – one of whom attended a satellite church in Charlotte, N.C. – have made similar claims.

The men say they were 17 or 18 when the relationships began. Federal and state authorities have declined to investigate because Georgia's age of consent is 16.

"I've been accused. I'm under attack. I want you to know, as I said earlier, I am not a perfect man," Long said. "But this thing, I'm going to fight."

Long did not address the allegations directly but spoke at length about enduring painful times. He used the word "painful" nearly 20 times. The term "difficult" came up seven times.

"We are all subject to face distasteful and painful situations. Bishop Long, Eddie Long – you can put your name in that blank – will have some bad situations," he said. "The righteous face painful situations with a determined expectancy. We are not exempt from pain, but (God) promises to deliver us out of our pain."

Cheryl Barnett, who has attended New Birth since Long became senior pastor more than 20 years ago, said she was "very much fulfilled with what he had to say."

"It was simple. It was direct. He's standing in the scriptures. That's what we would expect from our minister," she said.

Long addressed the media briefly during a press conference between services, but media access to the services themselves was tightly controlled. Reporters were required to check in with church officials and were led to a separate part of the church to view the service. The media was also told not to interview church members inside the sanctuary or on church property.

After Long's remarks during the 8 a.m. service, an Associated Press reporter was escorted out of the sanctuary by church officials who said the press were not allowed in the sanctuary during worship.

Members clapped and swayed in their seats as the first service began, with several people with microphones singing on stage. Later in the service, hundreds began dancing and chanting, "Jesus, Jesus." A small group of young people held Apple iPads high over their heads, with the screens scrolling white letters against a black background reading, "It's time to praise him."

As Long entered the cathedral, a group of people shouted, "We love you bishop!"

"I love you, New Birth," Long replied.

"I'm not leaving you if you don't leave me."

This man is no "David". How dare he give himself that name, shame on him. He should step down until this whole thing is done. However, I think his EGO is to big and will not allow him to do so. Let me make this clear, I do not care if you are blue, white, black, or brown, if you are being infestigated for something like this, you should NOT be able to maintain your position until everything is cleared up.
I have not heard much about them checking into ALL of the Churches financial affairs. If it is true that he paid for one of his victims homes, OTHERS had to know about it. How many others were aware of it??(This whole thing reminds me of James Baker they investigated him and put him in prison for misuse of Church funds. How will eddie handle the prison stripes?)
I bet if he were white he would have been hung out to dry, and put in prison already... Since he is black he will be treated with kid gloves,as expected, otherwise the race card will be bantered around.
My heart goes out to all those who didn't have much, but they gave what they had , they didn't know they were supporting eddies habit.
In the end we can say all we want about him, one day him, and I, and you will stand before a Holy God for an account of our lives.

Dude you have five rocks and we know you have already thrown four of those to some place you should not have thrown them. I have a feeling you have thrown more rocks than you have and very soon you will have rocks thrown at you.!!!!!!!!

The pastor compares himself to David, of the bible, who is believed to have been bisexual. A clue to his next move; or an unfortunate, irony?
11:56 PM on 09/29/2010
You make that assumption because he was a close friend of Stephen (Kind Saul's son.)

There is no indication that the relationship was sexual in any way, but a brotherly type of love.
Anyone who takes this as some kind of sexual thing is simply mistaken.

When the Bible references homosexuality, it clearly states so.

Say what you will about Bishop Long, but don't misrepresent what the Bible says.

Classic rush to judgement.

Remember not just him being sued, the Church, and the Academy is also. He has to defend different entities in the suits.

Bishop Long has listenening to his attourney, and refrained from speaking about his response to the accusations
I'm not surprised he's not running to the magazines right now.

Neither Bishop Long - or the church, is willing to settle out of court.
What Bishop Long is doing is controlling his responses with the knowledge that ANY statement can be used against him. He still has to deal with these charges in a court of law.

Here is what I suspect is starting to happen.

1. Some (usually non church-members) will believe the accusers. These days it's quite easy to say you were a victim of a Minister.

2. The church-members will feel that their minister (and their church) is being unfairly attacked, and will rally to his side to defend him. They KNOW him - others don't.

I know Black Churchgoers (which I am), we have an attachment to our church. You want to start an argument - talk bad their Pastor - the sparks will fly.

3.The public (knowing Bishop Long won't respond) will stop attacking him, and start speaking against Black Preachers in general.

Notice the mentioning of T.D. Jakes on this message board....nothing to do with anything, but now Bishop Jakes is being criticised.
Huh ?

ALL mega-church pastors are suspect and have been for years - by many - because they use scripture to promote themselves...there is NOTHING Christ-like about them...Christ was not into bling and didn't ask his followers for money to support his lavish lifestyle

Jesus didn't have a place to live, and often slept outside, but I doubt you are willing to become homeless.

The Apostle Paul (whom is a greater authority) never said a person has to be poor, and expressly stated that it's ok to have things, as long as they don't have you.

We all work for a better place to live, better clothes , and a better life for our families - but when it come to the Man of God, we don't want him to have anything.
As an author, and recod producer, he is independantly weathly and has a right to spend it on anything he wishes.
If he wants to buy a nice house for his family (as any person would) then good for him.

Perhaps if we dropped our jealousy ( criticising another person's success without cause) mybe we would all do a little better.

BLACK FOLKS: regardless of who you believe to be credible in this situation (and from my previous posts it is clear I believe the plaintiffs), please don't let this story consume you so much that you forget to vote in the November elections. Don't get mad at me for calling you out. You know we have a lax record when it comes to mid-term elections and our attention can be easily diverted from important political matters when the media focuses our attention on celebrity scandal in our community.

All of these comments from Black folks about Eddie Long and the plaintiffs are indicative of the fact that we truly care about issues impacting our community. Just remember that our participation in the mid-term elections is also something that impacts our community and requires our attention and action.

!. How did the young men get those pictures?

2. Did Rev. Eddie Long send them directly to them, or did they get them from someone else?

3. If he was sending anyone from his congregation pictures of himself in tight exercise attire, I can't think of a plausible explanation from a pastor, can you? Did he address that issue yet?

This is such a betrayal to a wife that you asked to place her trust in you.

Eddie: "In the natural, physical, and material world in which a wife lives with her husband, she must acknowledge her husband as the king of the house and the lord of the manor. She must respect his position of headship in the home. This yielding to headship is the basis on which a woman leaves her father's house and name and takes the name of her husband. Before my wife married, she was Vanessa Griffin because her father's name was Griffin. She's now Vanessa Long. She has come under my headship, my covering ... When a woman marries, she needs to take her husband's name and place her identification under his covering. If she isn't willing to accept the name of the one who is assuming the responsibility and authority for protecting her and providing for her, she shouldn't marry."

After reading the following, I am a little more enlightened as to why Long's buddy T.D. Jakes has not stepped forward to say anything in Long's defense:

"The 29-year-old son of popular TV evangelist T.D. Jakes was arrested after allegedly whipping out his private in front of two undercover vice detectives in a Dallas park last month, CBS 11 News reports." (January 3, 2009)

Ain't nobody gonna hone in on any camera time at this point in the mess. They do not even want you to call their name. But was it necessary for you to drag Jake's son's arrest into this mess? Or did your empathy for the four alleged victims use up your storehouse of empathy and sensitivity? Is it available solely to the fatherless and the father's you approve of?

I brought up the subject of Jake's son because a couple of days ago I asked - here - why Long's prominent and self-proclaimed friends such as T. D. Jakes, Tony Blair, Winnie Mandela, etc. were not stepping forward to defend him. It was a valid question. After reading about Jake's son, it was easy to understand why Jakes doesn't want any spotlight to shine on his affiliation with Long, homosexuality and/or homosexuality-related scandals involving members of his own family.

For the record, T. D. Jake's son's arrest was a well publicized matter - in the Dallas area and nationally - as opposed to something I dug out of hidden closet.

I have absolutely no empathy for those who stand at the pulpit telling others how to raise their children and who profit from telling others that their daughters are loose and immoral when they know damn well that they themselves and their own sons and daughters are the antithesis of what they preach.

I was raised by a father who did not attend church and who considered organized religion and many of its leaders were a bunch of malarkey. He called them "prayer pimps who prey on the weak for money and status." Nevertheless, he didn't lie, cheat, steal and was more Christ-like than most Christians I've known in life. So yes, you're right, my empathy and sensitivity is reserved for the fatherless and is for available solely to the fathers of whom I approve.

From Towleroad...

Jamal Parris, one of the four men who have accused anti-gay Pastor Eddie Long of sexual abuse, spoke out about the trauma yesterday.

Here's the report of what the 24-year old told Atlanta's Fox affiliate about the alleged violations, and how Long "seduced" him into a place of submission...

First victim calls Eddie Long a Monster. He prays on young boys with no father figure, has them call him Daddy, they believe he's the best thing that ever happened to them in their troubled lives and he uses them for sex and tosses them out for the next pretty boy that comes along.
Where are these boys advocates in the black community while their families are being threatened by followers of Eddie Long?

This is not a Black community issue. This issue affects the community at large.

I have neither seen nor heard any threats to these people or their families. The media in Atlanta are rabid and would put the slightest hint of that on full blast.

The complainants did not seek Black community advocates to redress their concerns. They chose a white female attorney with expertise in child advocacy. There has been no mention made that I am aware of of any complaints filed with the institutions involved by the complainants. They continued to participate, have not reported turning down or returning any gifts, and no one has said that a complaint was lodged by the relevant community authorities. No one has cited a family and children services case was opened or a grievance filed at the church or youth institute.

The young man yesterday stated that he was at a loss and upset when it became apparent the monster's attentions were being applied elsewhere. He did not report on how he continued to accept gifts and indulgences while engaging in this behavior that made his skin crawl, or elaborate on being upset when the attentions and the gifting stopped.

He did make it clear that he wished for no one else to experience the things he has.

Thanks for the explanation.
So you're saying these boys are only victims of their own greed and the thought of the only man they'd come to know as daddy taking his money, gifts and penis away made them so distraught they decided to gang up and exploit poor Eddie Long so all will know and other boys and their Mama's will be more cautious when Eddie comes knocking?

I'm trying to figure you out... Did this happen to you and you live in a world of denial that you can't break free from yet or do you also consider yourself above reproach?
Are you a leader or a follower...

Parents are happy to send their children to churches where they are supposed to be nurtured and taught to "love thy neighbor", etc. Parents don't fear the safety of their children being in the house of God. Also, I'm sure that the parents of these young plaintiffs were happy that their sons were being nurtured and loved at New Birth Baptist Church. However, it appears that their sons would have been safer hanging out on the street corners with crack heads and sinners. It's apparent that the good Christian folks at New Birth are bigger sinners because they kept silent and only protect their beloved Bishop. What a shame and a pity!

Your contentions, while understandable as fantasies, are factually inaccurate. Even in the midst of this anguish and turmoil, the complainant interviewed yesterday spoke of the benefit he received from the New Birth program. The church's involvement arose to address the problems and ills youth in the community encounter. Whatever happened, the youth were safer in the confines of the program than they were on the streets and with crack heads. That does not make any dirty deeds right. However, it should not be lost that this church stepped up and provided many programs and services to address these community needs. The shame is that this mess undermines what has been stellar work. The programs are probably still good, and should not be discredited by Bishop Long's alleged errant activities. What should happen is that policies be reviewed to make sure there are reporting mechanisms and policies that all understand and are aware of, and safe sanctuary and program practices employed. I do not think (and my conjecture is as valid as yours) that most people knew anything. The mere thought is sickening, and the people of New Birth have the same functioning sensitivities that you do. What it seems nobody really had was a substantive allegation and proof of hanky panky.

"Whatever happened, the youth were safer in the confines of the program than they were on the streets and with crack heads."

IF the allegations against Long are proven to be true, then the victimized youth were definitely not safer in the confines of the Church's programs than they were on the streets with the pimps, dope dealers, crack heads and others who prey on children; AND, I sincerely hope you make the time and effort to retract the above statement.
