Carl Paladino Says If He Becomes New York's Next Governor, 'It's Not Going To Be Pretty'

DEEPTI HAJELA   09/27/10 06:48 PM ET   AP

Carl Paladino Interview

NEW YORK — If politics is the art of compromise, no one told Carl Paladino.

The Republican gubernatorial candidate, who tapped into a wellspring of voter anger to grab an unexpected primary win two weeks ago, was very clear on what the next four years would look like if he wins.

In an interview Monday with The Associated Press, the real estate developer insisted he would limit himself to one four-year term and suggested that a little scorched earth probably wouldn't be so bad. When asked how he could work with politicians he's currently speaking out against, the 64-year-old made it clear he had no intention of doing so.

"It's not going to be pretty," Paladino said of his time in office. "It's going to be very confrontational."

Paladino, a millionaire developer in Buffalo, gained notoriety early on in his campaign when it was reported he had forwarded racist and sexist e-mails, for which he has apologized. In recent months, he won the support of tea party voters angry with high taxes and politics as usual, and he rode that support to his primary victory.

His mince-no-words, take-no-prisoners style is focused on bringing what he says is needed change to the way Albany works.

In policy terms, that's meant taking stances in favor of cutting benefits like Medicaid because, he says, the state's generous policies attract people who come to New York solely to take advantage of them at the expense of taxpayers.

The policies "are inviting every Tom, Dick and Harry poor and disenfranchised person to come to New York state," he said. "We don't want them, they're the responsibility of the federal government or the place they came from."

When asked if that meant immigrants, he replied he was talking about "immigrants and other people."

In political terms, that's meant lambasting Cuomo and others like powerful Democratic Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, whom he accuses of running the government like a dictatorship.

When asked how it would be possible to work with Silver should he be elected, Paladino questioned the assumption that he would at all.

"Why would I work with Sheldon Silver? He's wrong," Paladino said.

He said he would work only with people of his choosing, which would not include anyone he thought was trying to uphold the dysfunctional status quo in Albany.

Silver spokesman Bill Wise declined to comment on Paladino's remarks, saying the speaker would rather New Yorkers focus on Paladino's character and position on the issues.

Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac Polling Institute, said Silver's years in Albany would make him a difficult person to ignore.

"Shelly Silver has been the power in Albany for a long time now," he said.

Paladino said he expected legislators with whom he could work would be elected to state government in November.

Marist College pollster Lee Miringoff said that remained to be seen. He said voters see a need for change in Albany, but also are upset that elected officials aren't working together to solve problems. Paladino, he said, was tapping into the first concern while ignoring the second.

Paladino had even harsher words for his opponent in the governor's race.

Cuomo "doesn't have one quality to be the representative of the government of the state of New York, to be a representative of the people," he said.

When asked about the tone of the general election campaign, already noted for its negativity, he said it would continue to be "a hell of a ride. Andrew's political career will be over when we get done with him."

Cuomo campaign spokesman Josh Vlasto denounced Paladino's rhetoric.

"Spite is not a rationale for running for governor," he said. "Paladino's extremist rants won't create jobs or reduce property taxes. His brand of extremism wants to destroy a lot of things, like a woman's right to choose. Voters are now faced with a stark choice and we will keep talking about the issues that New Yorkers care about."

Paladino said he is willing to do something he hates – campaigning – because he says the work of governing is that important.

"Doing this, this campaigning, is the most disgusting thing I've ever got myself involved with, but it's a necessary evil so that I can do the real job," Paladino said.

Republicans are really good at getting people to vote against their own interests.  Like a poster said below, they only care about richest 2% of the population, yet find means to attract the people in the 98% that they don't give a darn about.  They do so by finding wedge issues that also matter to a whole lot of people and then scaring the heck out of them.

I find these comments almost as amusing as good old Carl. I never thought he would get this far. At the very least it is entertaining. For all of you out there that say he is an embarrassment or classless or whatever, have you taken a look at New State government lately? A former governor who stepped down in disgrace for seeing prostitutes. At its best Albany is dysfunctional. How late was the budget this year? The state govt almost shutdown because of the budget bs. You have representatives in Albany that are criminals, and that isn't a euphemism, I'm talking real charges and arrests. You have the 3 men in a room politics where no one else in the state government really matters, its just those 3 guys making the decisions and everyone else has to follow it or else. And Silver is a piece of work. He has done more to screw up the state than anyone. NYS has been dying for years but the politicians just keep chugging along like the good old days of raping the state are still here. NYS can't handle that anymore. Then there was the whole fiasco a while back with some dems siding with the reps and everything was thrown into a frenzy. Both side acted like spoiled 3 yr olds. Hell I would almost like to see crazy Carl get in just to see what would happen. God knows he couldn't make the circus that is Albany any worse.

Paladino's right that it won't be pretty if he's elected governor. But, as a New Yorker, I hope that their aren't enough crazies here to make him governor.
08:52 AM on 09/30/2010
And you think things are pretty now in Albany? Really?
10:46 AM on 09/30/2010
I didn't say they were pretty now. But they will get worse if he gets elected.

well, I guess he would know
he strikes me as very low class
I have heard about the racist emails he sent
I take issue with his using the word "cojones" in his political attacks on Cuomo
(when did it become ok to talk about genitalia? huh, Sarah Palin?? how tacky)
04:27 AM on 09/30/2010
The racists emails were bad enough, but he also sent out emails showing a woman having sex with a horse. But hey, he says he only sent them to a select group of friends he knew would enjoy them. Stay classy Carl.

Oh please... like Albany is a very classy bunch. Go back a few months to where both sides acted like spoiled 3 yr olds trying to get their own way. Locking one side or the other out of the room, or having to gavels going. Or how about a governor who steps down in disgrace. And the Cuomo name doesn't really bring back a warm and fuzzy feeling. Dear old dad wasn't the best governor in the work. When the son gets in, it's going to be the same o same o in state government. Some day people will wake up and get rid of the anchor around the neck of NYS by tossing the likes if Silver out of government finally, at least that I would hope people will wake up. Though there are to many that don't think for themselves and follow along like sheep. Really old Crazy Carl may fit in just fine in the asylum of Albany. NYS government is a joke to begin with.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Who is a dictator? Who is dysfuctional? King Paladino would alienate those who's support he woud need to accomplish anything. He is a wasted vote.

His campaign manager failed to pay nearly $53,000 in federal taxes over the last few years, prompting the Internal Revenue Service to take action against him. An aide who frequently drives Mr. Paladino on the campaign trail served jail time in Arizona on charges of drunken driving.

Another adviser has been indicted on charges of stealing more than $1 million from Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s re-election bid last year. And Mr. Paladino’s campaign chairwoman left a local government position amid claims that she had steered $1 billion in public money to a politically connected investment manager.

Their backgrounds could raise questions about the kind of cabinet Mr. Paladino, a Republican, would assemble if elected in November and cast doubt on his ability to radically remake the dysfunctional culture of Albany, government watchdogs said.

Born and raised in New York lived there for most of my adult life. New York has never been the melting pot people always say it is. The most ignorant and racist people I have ever seen live in New York. It's no wonder that a clown like this might become the Governor. If New York really want's to be called the greatest city on earth it has a lot of cleaning up to do. Better get your act together N.Y. and vote big for the other guy.
09:26 AM on 09/30/2010
Neither one of them are worth the vote. The Cuomo name doesn't bring back warm feelings for me. Though most people tend to have a short memory. And since when had NYS ever been able to get their act together? The state government is a joke and always has been one.

I've have a friend who supports Paladino, and she can't really explain why, other than it's time for a change. You can't even explain to her that all change isn't good. I'm trying to avoid her until after the election.

Why would anyone even vote for this individual who sends porn vids and vids of bestiality through the internet?: this man wanted to venture into politics so now he's is a free target for his debauchery. Just the thought of Paladrino running for governor invokes Montezuma's Revenge. I wouldn't let my children near this man.

Check out NY Times article on Paladino's staff -- campaign mgr is a tax cheat; driver was convicted of DUI / hit-and-run / driving w/ suspended license in AZ; campaign strategist in under indictment for stealing over $1M from Bloomberg's mayoral campaign; campaign chairwoman was driven out of Erie County office by questionable funneling of 80% of county's bond business to one of her campaign contributors.
