Colton Tooley Named As University Of Texas Shooting Suspect

First Posted: 09/28/10 05:01 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:50 PM ET

The Austin American-Statesman reports that the suspected gunman in today's shooting at the University of Texas was mathematics sophomore Colton Tooley. Police say Tooley, 19, acted alone.

According to the Daily Texan, Tooley did not seek mental health services at UT. Police today removed a computer from the South Austin home in which he apparently lived and are continuing their investigation there.

KVUE reports that Tooley was an alumnus of Crockett High School in Austin.

The media may have killed off the story (or lost interest), but the gun-control activists will use this to scream for tighter gun controls.

The media has already killed off this story. The guy was not a Muslim so they don't care. No ratings involved.

How the hell does a 19 year get a an AK-47???
04:41 PM on 09/29/2010
You can buy one at most gun stores.

You can't buy a full auto version, but the semi-auto is just like most hunting rifles.

It was the semi-auto civilian version of an AK, not the military full-auto assault rifle version. The semi-autos are perfectly legal to own.

Seriously, our legalisation of guns policy needs to go.

In light of the VA Tech tragedy, UT did about a good a job as anybody could have hoped in containing this incident. Within minutes the entire school was on lockdown and students had all been ordered to stay home. They had great response to what could be an ugly incident, so kudos to them.

Another fact being ignored is that Tooley was legally carrying the AK on campus - long arms (rifles) can legally be open carried on public property in TX - and he only broke the law once he began firing.

Secondly, from what has been released, Tooley legally owned the AK, and anything that would have stopped him from buying it would also infringe upon the 2nd Amendment rights of law abiding Americans.

Remember - it's the 2nd Amendment that guarantees that the we are free to exercise the rest of our Constitutional rights.
09:52 AM on 09/29/2010
There is a seperate policy that firearms cannot be carried on any campus in the state of Texas. (found this quickly but UT's policy is the same)

Texas state law prohibits weapons on all state property including Texas Tech University. In the residence halls and dining rooms, weapons are defined as, but not limited to, handguns, stun guns, paint guns, pellet guns, darts, switchblades, knives with blades two or more inches in length (excluding standard pocket knives) and all hunting equipment including shotguns, bows and arrows and designated martial arts equipment. Ammunition for any type of firearm is also prohibited. Texas Tech University Police Department does not offer storage of these items. .

Sul Ross has an arms rooms for securing firearms owned by students who live on campus.

Do you think repealing the Second Amendment would have prevented this tragedy?

Some posters have described Crockett High School as a "redneck" white high school. However, in 2008, the Crockett High School student body was 63 percent Hispanic, 26 percent non-Hispanic white, and 10 percent black. Although the name Tooley is Anglo, the student appears to be Hispanic. He might have an Anglo father and Hispanic mother. Of course, there's no apparent reason to think race or ethnic grouping had anything to do with the suicide.

oh sure, let's blame it on the dark guy! No way that guy coulda been white!!! Even though he had a white last name!! Does Timothy McVeigh ring a bell??? How bout those two white dudes in Columbine? Are you suggesting only white people can be rednecks? WHAT IS YOUR POINT?

I think his point was:

My point was that posters who describe Crockett as a "redneck" white high school appear to be unaware of its demographics.
10:30 AM on 09/29/2010
The diverse racial make-up of the school doesn't change the fact that it's in the heart of a hyper-conservative, hyper-Christian, dry East Texas area. One might even consider the impact to minorities of having to grow up in such a place... probably frustrating.

It is in Austin.

I've seen a few comments along the lines of "How could this kid get an AK-47?" and comments suggesting that the gun was fully automatic.
First of all, in Texas, as long as you are 18 years old and have no felony convictions or pending indictments, you are legally allowed to purchase a rifle - the process and paperwork takes about 15 minutes - as does the automated background check. Pistols are much the same, with the age being raised to 21. Cabela's in Austin was selling AK's earlier in the month for under $450.
Secondly, just because shots were fired in rapid succession, that doesn't mean the gun was fully automatic - I can make my AK sound like a full auto simply by bump-firing it. If you don't know what I mean, there are lots of videos of it on YouTube.
10:08 AM on 09/29/2010
Why get all excited about gun control then? Excepting a couple of minor details, it sounds like the guy was fully in compliance with the law of the land.

Your age limits are for purchase from a dealer. Possession or private purchase age limits are lower.

We need to make assaulting people with an AK-47 illegal.

Oh...wait...
10:21 AM on 09/29/2010
Rather than trusting criminals and nutjobs to comply with that law, we should make AK47s illegal.

Sure, so long as the following countries are aware of the ban and promise to positively, absolutely enforce any law we demand in order to ensure compliance to our laws:

Countries that manufacture the AK-47

Would that have made a difference? 18 U.S.C. 922 makes possession of firearms by all kinds of prohibited persons (Illegal aliens, felons, etc.) illegal. Yet they still get their hands on them and use them. If we made all firearms illegal to all people, would that stop a guy like this from doing what he did?

In my experience, and in the experience of MANY others here, the rules exist only on paper. The Mods are all-powerful, and they enjoy wielding their power. I don't think it's the community-mods. It's the hacks that AH hires.

Censorship is censorship and it's happening to people on both sides of the aisle.
