National Coffee Day: Where To Go For Your Morning Joe

Huffington Post     First Posted: 09/29/10 06:58 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:50 PM ET

For coffee day, we've rounded up our picks of the best cup of joe in Los Angeles. We're spoiled here - there are three cafes on the list that roast their own beans, and one that sources from their own farm in Guatemala. More than half on the list pride themselves on their "latte art." And for caffeine fiends who are also looking for a scene, Los Angeles delivers. Go people watching at Urth Caffe (a frequent Entourage guest star) and the hipster headquarters at Intelligentsia and Funnel Mill.

Tableside servers brew a deluxe list of limited premium blends with a sliding scale of complexity for varying levels of coffee snobs. There's the ubiquitous plunging French press; the scientific drip brew of Chemex; the hi-tech, vacuum-brewed Japanese siphon; and the insulated, filter-funneled Eva Solo. An upscale cafe menu by Michael Cimarusti (Providence) includes Dungeness crab cocottes, an Asian-style BLT with pork belly, clam cakes with yuzu aioli, crispy-skinned New Zealand char and liquid tiramisu. - Martha Burr at Citysearch

Jones in Pasadena also grows their own coffee in Guatemala, and is very good.

Funnel Mill!! Go there--you will not be disappointed. They are very, very serious about their coffee and tea, but not the least bit pretentious.

I AM BLOWN AWAY THAT KINGS ROAD COFFEE IS NOT IN THIS LINE UP...I have tried all of these places and KINGS ROAD IS HANDS DOWN THE BEST!!!

I'm with the King's Road Cafe (King's and Beverly east of La Cienega) - Seriously the best (if you like intense coffee). I had a cup with me this past weekend at the GLOW fest in Santa Monica, at night, in a crowd of thousands, in the dark - and a guy stepped out of the crowd recognizing the cup to ask if they had Kings Rd here - he was so disappointed that I'd brought it with me.

They roast their own beans - make one coffee, one size. Simple, perfect.

Oh, I just remembered, there are two other locations besides Pasadena: Culver City and Santa Monica. I've been to the one in Pasadena but not the others. Here's the page: http://birdpick.com/store/all Enjoy!

Check out Caffe Latte on Wilshire and Crescent Heights. After a few bad years, they're back in fine form, roasting their own.

Coffee plantations have been one of the largest sources of tropical deforestation in the last 20 years.

If you don't want to contribute to this deforestation and can't give up drinking coffee buy "Shade Grown" coffee when you can.

Shade Grown coffee plants grow well in shade and do not require the large scale clearing of trees/forest to grow as "sun grown" coffee does. (they sell Mexican "Shade Grown" Coffee at Starbucks by the bag but not by the cup).

Also buying "Fair Trade" coffee which makes sure coffee plantation workers, owners, co-op. farms etc. make a fair wage and are paid fair market prices for their coffee. (don't try to find or buy CHEAP coffee, it's usually sun grown coffee which requires large scale deforestation and likely pays workers low/poverty wages).

Another type of coffee to buy is "Organic" which is raised without synthetic fertilizers and farm chemicals which can pollute river and ground water in tropical coffee growing countries.

Many local food co-ops, cafes as well as various grocery chain outlets now sell "Fair Trade/Organic/Shade Grown" coffee. (try to find USDA certified, the USDA has high organic standards).

If your local grocery chain does not sell it you can request it.

I wrote in and requested it at our local Kroger Chain and they began stocking it.

So remember these terms: Fair Trade, Organic and Shade Grown.

Coffee is a luxury item so we shoud pay more and not exploit nature/people.

Two more little gems for the list:

Espresso Profetta on Glendon in Westwood -- great coffee, great, quiet atmosphere.

And if Urth cafe is too loud for you, walk two blocks west and check out Kafe Wien.... so delightful

Yes, I am a shallow LA coffee drinker and I love this post!

This LA section keeps on posting shallow things like Real Estate and Coffee bars on the front page. You're perpetuating the common shallow stereotype of LA. Isn't there any real news you can post?

How can you not mention Cafe de Leche. Besides having great regular coffee, they do horchata con espresso, which is killer! And the owner is very pro-Highland Park local business-- they do periodic small business workshops. Righteous all-around!

I used to go to Kings Road every day. I shipped it to friends in NYC who loved it. I miss it now that I am no longer there. Strong but great coffee!!!
