Google Instant Censorship: The Strangest Terms Blacklisted By Google

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 09/29/10 11:15 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:50 PM ET

As Google CEO Eric Schmidt reminded audiences at Tuesday's TechCrunch Disrupt conference, the search engine's new feature, Google Instant, will shave seconds off your search. "We want to give you your time back," he said.

But Google Instant, which suggests query terms and search results as you type them, also wants to be sure you won't be shown any "pornography, violence, [or] hate speech," according to a Google spokesperson. Google's Johanna Wright told CNN that the restrictions are intended to safeguard children.

In order to shield users from such content, Google has "blacklisted" numerous terms, often very inconsistently: type in "lesbian" (one word blocked by Google Instant), and Instant shuts off, presenting no suggested search terms or results. On the other hand, if you type in "gay," you'll be offered a dropdown menu with a handful of possible terms. "Cocaine" is blocked, but "marijuana" and "heroin" are not. The site 2600.com has compiled a thorough, ever-expanding list of Google's "blacklist words." You can, of course, still search for the blacklisted terms, but you'll only be shown the results by clicking enter, and not via Google Instant.

"When results fail to appear after you've typed "lesbian" or "butt," it's not because the results are being censored," CNN explains. "Google is struggling to prevent the text of offensive searches users have made in the past (there have been other controversies on this subject before) from jumping up in front of you when you're looking for something innocuous."

In the slideshow below, we've selected some of the most surprising terms blocked by Google Instant, as well as those that have been inconsistently censored. Have you found others that seemed strange to be on Google's blacklist? Take a screenshot and send us the picture by clicking the "Add a slide" button. Find out more about Google Instant, as well as how to turn it off.

Why does google hate the penis? Don't most men have one? Is their any better friend in a man's life than his penis? no woman will love you as much as your penis will.. a dog might which is why a dog is a man's best friend..

Well heroin is in many ways a less dangerous drug than cocaine. It is addictive whereas coke is not but cocaine causes more internal bodily harm for the user than opiates like heroin do. So maybe they are making a judgment call on the relative health of the two drugs?

Or maybe its that cocaine is, depending on the year, the second or third most common drug and heroin is far less frequently used.

This "censorship" seems very reasonable. What are censored are merely the words google might suggest when you start to type in a search argument. I would prefer -- especially if
someone else is using my home computer, which can happen when my young grandchildren
come to visit -- not to have potentially inappropriate search arguments suggested.Very young children (say, age 6-9) often misspell or mis-enter their search arguments, which might open the door to a flood of inappropriate suggestions.

I mean, it's not as if they were censoring the contents of answer sets. Like, you can always
enter your full search argument yourself and Google will find it for you.

Yea, i don't understand the problem with just hitting enter after you make a search query that doesn't appear on instant. As usual people complain about things that have been gifted to them.

What's the story behind blacklisting boob, Paris Hilton, latina, amateur, scat and women rapping? What the heck is going on?

People are so hyped over google instant. Sure it is a fresh take on searching but I don't really care enough to use it, I just google everything using Firefox's search bar. I don't bother with typing in google's url just to use instant.

I bet many people do the same on different browsers.

Well I'm screwed then - I was just about to search for two women doing an amateur rap version of a Philip K. Dick novel.

I love that many people want to continue seeing Paris Hilton blocked. But clearly not many people surveyed know who Philip K. Dick is.

Why would they block "amateur"?
