88-Year-Old Pierre Cardin Returns To Paris Runway After 10 Years (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

First Posted: 09/29/10 04:18 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:50 PM ET

French designer Pierre Cardin feted the 60th anniversary of his brand with his first Parisian runway show in ten years. WWD caught up with Cardin beforehand who explained his inspiration: "Showing that the brand still exists as a creative force--that's what drives me. And I notice that what I do early on becomes commercial some 15 or 20 years later. I'm always ahead of the curve."

The 88-year-old Cardin told the fashion newspaper that he would never hand over his label to a younger designer, explaining, "No, because I have five people sketching for me who are very young. And I think the young designers of today are less avant-garde than I am. I'm still in good shape, I work every day."

Here are some of Cardin's duds from 1969.

He should have just brought back 1969.

I appreciate that Cardin hasn't put his models in 6 inch stilettos that many runway models have trouble walking in. The models from 1969 really rocked the pilgrim shoes!

I thought he'd passed years ago.

Pierre Cardin was an undisputed genius of fashion.

it is, however; rather sad to see these derivative re-inventions from the 60s. Particularly from a person that was previously considered such a luminary.

At the time, those fashions were pretty cool. I enjoyed looking at them and the memories.

This was a bizarre collection over 200 looks and it had me wondering if he Pierre Cardin was on dementia meds or maybe I was watching Zoolander. It was the David Lynch of collections for Spring Summer 11

I just think about that Seinfeld episode where George's parents start spending their savings and Frank Costanza comes into a restaurant where George and Jerry's parents are dining with a nice suit on, pulls out his tie and exclaims..'it's a Pierre Cardin'! Way too funny.

I think it's amazing that he is still going strong....
In 2001 Vanity Fair did a story (Cover) Photographers (still working) over 80! Creativity/art/fashion are a passion that keep our hearts moving and our souls giving...

Hmm. It sort of looks like future wear and some fashions we'd like to forget from the past.

It really is cool to see people over 80 getting out there and doing things. It really inspires me. I intend to die at 90 by getting hit by a truck while I'm training for a triathlon, not slipping away in my sleep rocking on my front porch.

I'm hoping that the newspaper headline reads, "Octogerian found shot to death in a seedy roadside motel. Teenage boyfriend claims he found his lover cheating on him with a younger boy." It's totally false but, it's what I'd like to see in the obituary column!
