I fear to think how influential NL was on me as a teenager, and am pretty proud of it as well. At its height it was smart, sharp-tongued and filled with existential dread, the perfect vehicle for the times and for us!

There were four big influences on my sense of humor in my formative years. First was Bill Cosby's stand-up routines when I was, like, 8. Then the Smothers Brothers around age twelve. I'm thankful that my parents were not Bonanza fans. Then in high-school it was NL. Parents and teachers hated it, it had to be cool (my parents thought it raunchy, but tolerable). And last, but not least and just in time for my first year of college, SNL. These four comedic entities are the foundation, the four pillars if you will, of my sense of humor.

Wow - we were experiencing exactly the same stuff at the same time. I was a huge Smothers Brothers fan. I'd add Monty Python, which appeared on PBS about the same time as SNL. The sheer surrealism of the Pythons always made me laugh till my sides hurt.

The Pythons would certainly have been a fifth pillar, but I moved from LA to Chattanooga, TN while I was in high school and the PBS station didn't, maybe wouldn't carry the show. I didn't become a fan 'til late in the Python game.

I discovered NatLamp in my mid teens after years of being an avid MAD reader. At its peak in the mid-1970s the Lampoon was, at its best, untouchable for the combination of raunchiness, social satire and intelligence it offered. Too bad it couldn't last.

Loved the old NL mags - I miss intelligent low brow/high brow humor.
