Wisconsin Senate Race: Polls Show Feingold Trailing

First Posted: 10/01/10 09:48 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:55 PM ET

New polls released yesterday in Wisconsin, Kentucky and New Hampshire highlight three U.S. Senate contests that have been regarded as marginally competitive but are now leaning to the Republicans. The most consequential is Wisconsin, where a handful of new polls now show incumbent Senator Russ Feingold trailing Republican challenger Ron Johnson.

A new automated Rasmussen survey released yesterday shows Johnson leading Feingold by 12 points (54% to 42%). Two weeks ago, the CNN/Time poll, the only live interviewer survey conducted in the state since July, showed Johnson leading by 6 (51% to 45%), but an automated poll two weeks ago conducted by Daily Kos and the Democratic firm PPP had Johnson up 11 (52% to 41%).

The trend in Johnson's favor since the summer is hard to miss. Our trend line estimate now puts Johnson ahead by nearly 10 points (52.9% to 43.1%).

In a twist, the more recent live interviewer polls in New Hampshire show the Democrat doing worse than the automated surveys. A new WMUR/University of New Hampshire survey now shows Republican Kelly Ayotte leading Democrat Paul Hodes by 15 (50% to 35%), one point narrower than an American Research Group (ARG) survey completed on Sunday (46% to 32%). Most of the previous automated polling showed slightly narrower margins, but our trend lines look flat, and show Ayotte holding a nearly 10 point lead (48.3 to 38.7%).

Surveys paint a less consistent picture in Kentucky, where yesterday's new Rasmussen poll shows Tea Party Republican Rand Paul leading Democrat Jack Conway by 11 points (49% to 38%). However, two surveys last week, one from SurveyUSA and another sponsored by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) both showed Paul leading by just 2 and 3 points respectively. Our trend estimate splits the difference and puts Paul ahead by nearly eight (48.2% to 40.5%)

Also just out this morning, results from the latest Quinnipiac University poll on the Florida Governor's race, which shows Republican Rick Scott leading Democrat Alex Sink by six points (49% to 43%). Recent surveys by other pollsters have shown margins ranging between the Quinnipiac result and a 7-point Sink lead (47% to 40%) measured a week ago by Mason-Dixon. Our trend estimate gives Scott a two-point margin (48.7% to 46.7%), so despite the Quinnipiac result we still rate Florida a toss-up -- one of the closest Governor races in the nation.

Finally, yesterday in the new Pollster section of the Huffington Post, I took a closer look at yet another Alaska poll obtained after yesterday's update that shows the wide range of support for Senator Lisa Murkowski depending on how pollsters ask the vote question.

Also new and noteworthy in the Pollster section:

Kristen Soltis ponders whether pollsters have been surveying too many conservatives lately.

David Wilson suggests a different context for recent Obama job approval numbers.

Michael McDonald finds some good news for New Yorkers and bad news for Texans in recent data on the coming congressional reapportionment.

Brian Schaffner shares data on risk-averse voters and considers a potential silver lining for endangered incumbents.

And Brendan Nyhan ponders whether Democrats can sustain their enthusiasm for Democratic presidents.

Feingold in 2012 -- take a last stand against Citizens United and a GOP Supreme Court majority gone awry with treason.

If Feingold loses, then I will be sad. As a Californian, I cannot help him win reelection, but I can laud his service to the American people.

He is the biggest threat to the MIC and to the Wall Street juggernaut. He is being squashed. I cannot think of another politician besides Dennis K that I admire as much.

The GOP/Tea Potty are already bragging and licking their chops, but I would remind the GOP that they have been in control for most of the last 30 years and the economic crisis has their prints all over it. So they are fortunate that most Americans are followers with short attention spans and a terrible sense of history.

Feingold is one of the finest senators ever. Please Wisconsin remember you send quality not crazy to congress "PLEASE DON'T CHANGE".

It's funny some on the left is so far out of touch with the average American/reality that they think Ron Jonson is a crazy for not towing the global warming line that has been exposed as the big bag of lies it is. Some on the left still have their heads in the sand on this one, they have been so bombarded with this crap it's all they know. I knew it was crap from the start because it came from the left. With the left mostly having no sense of morality or faith how could we expect anything less. Feingold is a tool for Obama and he is also a millionaire, You want to make this about class then here we go there are more millionaires on the left then there are on the right. Some of their ill gotten earnings are made through government largess and pay backs, but I am not jealous, bit it is you who think the honesty and upright people are on the left you are going to have a rude awakening one day like I had. I am like Saul, but you probably prefer the Koran so you wouldn't understand....

Ok, I just got an e-mail from Donna Brazil saying Feingold gained double digits in the polls and is now neck and neck one point behind. Why isn't this on HP????
11:18 PM on 10/08/2010
Because no one really cares for Feingold, but loony left wing nut bags.

Russ Feingfold is a great senator, fighting for what is right for democracy and against the status quo. Its truly a shame that this seat is in danger of being taken by a millionare. Feingold has remained true to his principles unlike the other maverick of the senate.

I am far from Wisconsin, but remember seeing him many times during the last election and I thought he came across as just that; fighting for democracy AND the status quo. I hope he can still pull out a win.

Wisconsin is in a mood not to be strong-armed into gov't-owned healthcare. So, we may lose the only Senator with courage to vote against the Patriot Act and gain a loon that doesn't believe in global warming. Even Russ has to listen to his constituents sometimes. Go Obama. No, really, just go. You guys have seriously, seriously screwed up.

Automated polling.. I can tell you nobody I know answers an 800 or an unknown number. And then there is the millions of people with nothing but cell service. Makes me wonder how far off they really are on the polling.

Old numbers. CNN posted it's most recent poll last Friday that had Feingold ahead of Johnson 48-46% with a margin of error at +/- 2.5%. Wisconsin is waking up after the long summer and taking a serious look at the midterms....and Johnson is going to be another Mark Neumann in November.

Close, but no cigar.
