Tens of thousands of civil rights, labor, and other progressive activists gathered on the National Mall today for the One Nation Working Together rally, meant to bring attention to the fight for jobs, justice and education and energize the left one month before the midterm elections.

"October 2nd is about November 2nd," SEIU President Mary Kay Henry recently told MSNBC host Ed Schultz, who heavily promoted the event on his show and gave opening remarks today. "And it's about what we do after November 2nd to hold elected officials and corporate America accountable to getting us back to work."

More than 400 organizations representing tens of thousands of individuals sponsored the rally, bringing together groups like the Sierra Club, United Mine Workers of America, and the NAACP. Backers were touting it as the most diverse march in history.

Organizers insisted that One Nation was not a response to Fox News host Glenn Beck's Aug. 28 "Restoring Honor" rally, although some attendees held signs referencing the personality and his network, such as "I want my country back from Glenn Beck" and "Fox News: The more you watch, the less u know." "I didn't really appreciate that he took away from Martin Luther King," said Sheila Robinson, a member of AFSCME's District Council 37, noting that Beck's rally was on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on the anniversary of the civil rights icon's "I Have a Dream" speech.

"His [Beck's] rally was in response to what the civil rights movement has always been about, which is a multiethnic movement," National Urban League President Marc Morial, who spoke at the rally, told The Huffington Post in an interview on Friday. "But I do invite people to consider the contrast they'll see, in terms of the diversity. This is named One Nation because this rally will look like the way the nation looks. It's going to be yellow, it's going to be black, white, Hispanic and Asian. It's going to be men and women. It's going to be people from various walks, areas and religions. That's what it's about, and that's what the future of America is about. So this is really also a demonstration that that is a future that we should be proud of, and that's a future we should embrace as a nation."

The National Mall looked like a patchwork quilt, with thousands of union workers grouped in clusters wearing t-shirts in their respective colors. Unions such as the AFL-CIO and SEIU bused in workers from all over the country, and many attendees at the event said that they learned about it from their local chapters and were hoping it would mobilize people to get out the vote for November. The Rev. Al Sharpton called the upcoming elections the country's "midterm exams" and said the left needed to get ready. "We've got to go home and got to hit the pavement," he urged attendees. "We've got to knock on doors... We've got to get ready for the midterm."

"I hope that people will go home, be energized to get their neighbors and their neighbors' neighbors out to vote so that we can out-vote those who don't know how to vote," said Lula Stewart, a member of the Office and Professional Employees International Union. "I will be calling, I will be visiting, going door to door, telling them how important this midterm vote is."

There didn't appear to be many conservatives at the rally; all the attendees with whom The Huffington Post spoke wanted to vote Republicans out of office in November, saying the GOP was more interested in defending corporations and the wealthy. There were some people waving signs and wearing clothing supporting President Obama, and most people gave him credit for trying but said he needed a Congress that was more willing to back him up -- both on the Republican and Democratic side.

Only one elected representative, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), spoke today, although Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) was also in attenance. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) was invited but was unable to participate. "On TV news, we don't see many pictures of the immigrant sweeping the floor in the hospital or caring for a sick child," said Gutierrez's prepared remarks. "But we see lots of pictures of scary invaders jumping over fences. Of prisoners in handcuffs. For too many people, the two words that come to mind when they think of immigrants are: Go Home. It's our job to replace them with two words that tell the real story: Hard Work."

Most attendees seemed to have received the message about focusing on jobs, justice and education, although there were a smattering of off-topic signs about war, not eating meat, and child abduction.

"I'm hoping this helps to be a counter-balance to all of the press that says there's this right-wing wave that everybody is more concerned about taxes than they are about justice," George Sheridan, a first- and second-grade teacher from California and member of the National Education Association told The Huffington Post. "We want to show that in fact, what we need is good jobs; that's where we'll get taxes from. What we need is social investment. If we educate the children, then we don't have as many people in welfare, we don't have as many people in prison. So we're looking for a just society. This is one step. That doesn't come from today, but this is one piece of a movement we have to build for years."

"If it weren't for businesses hiring the working class, there would be no working class. When government put their foot on the throats of businesses, they hurt the working class the most.

Government distribution of wealth guarantees no wealth will be created."

That is how you would like things to be, after you've eliminated the craftsmen and tradesmen. After you've taken the work from their hands, all you have are low-skilled service workers who can't afford to buy the products you sell. So you would like to build your businesses on cheap foreign goods and feed them to an increasingly poor nation of consumers. The American corporate structure eschews the products of unique talent in favor of the mediocre goods that consumers are convinced they should want.

When we made our own, good-quality stuff, meant to last more than a year, we made a living wage and could afford to buy good-quality stuff meant to last more than a year. As it is now, we are bred for service and consumption and wastefulness. That is your America. Enjoy!

So you think the government can solve this? Tariffs and protectionism, worst move we could make. Do you think, maybe, just maybe, that union demands helped push jobs overseas?
I live in Washington State, and have watched Boeing my whole life, unions think they have some kind of right to keep their jobs. If the contract is up, the contract is up, if they want to strike they have to realize they are taking a risk, I think many people forget this. If you strike, you do it based on the thought that you have the power to get what you want, but you could be wrong. The business has every right to hire replacements, move jobs out of state or out of country, if you think it may happen, then DON'T strike.
Once companies make their move they are not likely to move back. Not saying unions are totally to blame, but they do not help. The best thing that can happen is rapid prosperity in the rest of the world, as they gain more their wages go up, some things can slowly move back to richer countries. There is no magic bullet at this point.

I'm saying that an economy driven by low-skilled workers, that is dependent on consumer spending, is a very poor model and a recipe for disaster.

I don't see where I mentioned the government and I don't even see where I mentioned unions. I only described the flawed corporate model and it's impact on our economy and society in general.

Democrats do not argue with the regressives about whether the socialist party or the communist party were part of the rally. Democrats are not an exclusive organization like the republican party has become. As I told Candide33:

Candide33 it does not matter. The Democratic Party can handle the socialist and communist organizations they do not define the Party like the tea party has defined the republican party. Remember we are inclusive not exclusive. They embrace the likes of David Duke with his racism and bigotry and the racist signs Glenn Beck told them to leave home. We do shun those types but even if they were a part of the Party they would not be in the driver's seat...

In my state and all other states I do business in we already have to send 1099's to independent contractor's we pay over $600. It is not a huge cost at all. Basic business accounting and Management software have the tracking of income to be reported and the generation of 1099's ALREADY IN IT!

Where did you read that piece of fiction? Generating a 1099 and reporting is like printing a letter and sending an email these days. If you're running a business without proper accounting methods and software you are living in the stone age and the basic stuff that you can do yourself or have an assistant do is pretty cheap, easy to use and part of doing business effectively.

Now name a specific bill passed this year that is killing business?

Here are two - Obamacare - not knowing what costs of HC will be - is stifling business and failure to extend the Bus Tax cuts is doing the same.

Not to mention the general animosity the current admin has toward private enterprise writ large - which is why over TWO TRILLION DOLLARS is sitting on the sidelines currently...waiting for certainty.

Many major businesses and financial institutions are in the black. We are officially out of a recession but the GOP on the behalf of Big Business is faking an injury like so they can get their tax breaks. My question is who are these companies and businesses that need a crystal ball before they can DO BUSINESS?

They are not hiring because they don't want our POTUS to succeed! period! Many are finding it hard to admit that things are improving and Warren Buffet, Bill Gates and many very, very, wealthy people are telling us that they don't need the tax cut. Who in the hell are you defending?

1099 reporting will not kill business, but it will be a pain, and kill trees for sure.
Personal services always have required a 1099, except of C corp or S corp, then not required. That is a drop in the bucket compared to what the new law is.
If you are a small business who only deals with a few vendors, and only buys basic supplies from a few stores this is all no big deal. Of course any business can easily generate these forms with their software, this is not the issue. The issue is the overall extra work to all businesses as a whole, can you imagine how many reports Wallmart is going to get, or Costco, etc etc. Efile will cut down the trees killed probably, but large company's will need a whole new department, again costing us all as a whole. At the same time IRS is hiring a ton of people to help enforce this as well as regular tax items,.... Many IRS Auditors don't know much more than the local H&R block, and now they have hired more rookies.... Great plan...
And the biggest farce of all is that this extra compliance and tax revenue that is supposed to come be reducing tax cheats, nothing to do with Healthcare, zero connection, but this is somehow touted at part of the Healthcare bill savings... scam

No matter how you spin it there is no extra cost because large and small companies give w2's or 1099 to everyone who WORKS for them. Even if you only work one day! WITHOUT LEGISLATION The bill only solidifies what MOST businesses do ALREADY, Send a 1099 or W2 to any body who works for you and it gets reported and generated with EVERY F---Ing BODY ELSES. There is no extra compliance necessary no extra department because any salary is expense and is accounted with all other salary and expenses there is no extra trees killed. I swear!

STOP CREATING ISSUES THAT DON'T EXIST BECAUSE AN IDEOLOGUE PICKING APART THE BILL SAYS IT IS AN ISSUE! OMG DO I HAVE TO GO OVER ALL THE LIES AND MISCONCEPTIONS I HAVE HEARD ABOUT THIS BILL! Me and a few trusted independent professionals have already debunked this and about ten other issues with people I know who had SERIOUS concerns with the bill and now those people who swore those things were issues are seeing how well-crafted misinformation has affected logic and common sense. I'm a business owner who is working hard to grow a business and its VERY important to ME be aware of these issues if they existed.

When you hear from people you trust about an issue, you believe it.. but should you? You have to look at the motivation of your source and be big enough to admit when you may be wrong Darling!

Sounds like "sayanything" describes it right.

I don't believe it for a second, but even if true, Obama would have to take it from the wealthy because the wealthy have already taken it from the middle class and lower class through 30 years of failed trickle down. Wealth accumulation at the top is now greater than it was in the gilded age of robber barons.

Really? Then why is Biden complaining about liberals whining and how dull they are at his glorified pep rallies.

With 10% unemployment, what exactly do you have to fire up your base? Not to mention, the hikes in healthcare premiums and impending tax increases, caused by the buffoonery of the Dems and their policies.

Who's going to get excited about that?

As you can tell by my handle I am a BUSINESS OWNER! Big business is a problem my dear. They are hoarding profits and not investing in their workers. So is the attitude of many small business owners that I personally know. Some intentionally misrepresent the reasons why they employ certain practices or won't give a raise to their employees.

They sit around and ask each other "What do we tell our employees? And a conservative voice will come out with one of those famous anti-liberal talking points. Many meetings are liberal bash-fests instead of discussions of REAL issues and solutions. Any mention of an issue or situation is followed with a diatribe of complaints about Democrats and it comes from the same obstructionist jerks.

There comes a time when you have to stop complaining about people who are not your enemy and coming up with solid viable solutions that you can send up to be vetted by the experts.

I don't have a tax problem or regulatory issue. I have clients that are cutting costs because we they have a customer with less money to spend because of housing, medical and food costs which rise every year and their salaries stay flat.

I have the numbers [courtesy of CBS News] & the time the aerial shot was taken, thanks to a Beck zealot that managed to [yet again]outsmart himself.
How?
The Exif Data he provided proves that the pic was taken exactly 4minutes after the event started:
Tayeb--"Found original source of One Nation photo. Photo was taken just after noon."
Date: Taken on October 2, 2010 at 12.04pm EDT

Exif data:
Date and Time (Original) 2010:10:02 12:04:51
Date and Time (Digitized)2010:10:02 12:04:51

The picture shown here on HP was taken at 12:04PM.
The OneNation rally started at 12:00PM
I'd say that was a substantial amount of attendees for the first four minutes!

Here are the estimates along w/ comparison to beck rally attendees:

OneNation Rally: Approx. 187,000

Restoring Honor,DC Approx. 70,000 - 87,000

Restoring Honor,10.2.10:Approx. 700(out of exp.8000)

That last one was a real success,if Beck had no intention of breaking even for the overhead/rented space. Also successful if you market 'Hoverounds' & oxygen tanks.

Those that doubt the numbers presented take it up w/ CBSNews.
In the meantime, aerial shots taken at the beginning of a rally aren't credible sources as evidence of it's failure. It was pretty much an all day event.
