Eddie Long, Atlanta Bishop Accused Of Sexually Abusing Young Men, Says He's Not Going Anywhere

GREG BLUESTEIN   10/ 3/10 12:48 PM ET   AP

Eddie Long

LITHONIA, Ga. — A megachurch pastor accused of luring four young men into sexual relationships said Sunday that he won't be pulled into a street fight over the allegations and vowed that his faith has been strengthened.

Bishop Eddie Long did not directly mention the accusations to thousands of cheering supporters during services at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in suburban Lithonia. But his remarks seemed directly addressed to his accusers.

"In times of challenge, there are several things that come out. Your faith will be strengthened or weakened," he said, to growing applause. "My faith is being strengthened."

Long told supporters at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church that he is "not going to be pulled into a street fight" and that he doesn't hate anyone. But he directed his listeners to turn to a passage in the Book of Job that read: "Those who hate you will be clothed with shame, and the tent of the wicked will be no more."

As his devoted flock cheered, Long joked that he accidentally led them to the wrong page. "That was the Holy Ghost," he said, flashing a smile as the sanctuary echoed with laughter.

Long's more than hour-long sermon was greeted with thunderous applause and adoration. Several thousand parishioners flocked to the suburban Atlanta complex for the 8 a.m. service, and cars snaked in traffic for miles after it was over.

Long became one of the nation's most powerful church leaders over the past two decades, transforming a suburban Atlanta congregation of 150 into a powerhouse of 25,000 members that includes high-profile athletes, entertainers and politicians.

The bishop is a father of four who has been an outspoken opponent of gay marriage and whose church has counseled gay members to become straight. But the TV preacher's empire was threatened last month when the four men filed a civil lawsuit claiming Long abused his spiritual authority to lure them into a sexual relationship.

Two of the young men say he targeted them after they enrolled in the church's LongFellows Youth Academy, a program that taught teens about sexual, physical and financial discipline. The other two – one of whom attended a satellite church in Charlotte, N.C. – have made similar claims.

The men say they were 17 or 18 when the relationships began. Local and state authorities have declined to investigate because Georgia's age of consent is 16.

Long has not addressed the accusations directly, but promised Sunday that he would not let his legal troubles prevent him or his church from doing its work.

"I ain't going to stop living," he said amid more applause.

It saddens me to think that some BLACK people, really think GAY people go after people who don't like our way of life. The church is full of hateful mis-informed ignorant people, and in some case even the pastor. We have better things to do, than sit around plotting on how to bring a FAKE BISHOP down, EL ON the DL, big deal! BUT! when you preach against GAYS and have sex with gay boys- GOD will bring you down- it's called being EXPOSED.

Some of you guys are just drawing conclusion without knowing the fact behind the issue. Just for your information, the gay community will go to any length to blackmail the Christian faith, knowing that the major challenge to enacting their so call 'freedom' is Christianity.

Have you ever imagine how the world would look like if same sex marriage was the in thing from ancient time? If the procreation order was alter from ancient time, then may not have exist. We must not continue with this abnormality that is gaining ground by the day.

This gay community are so favoured, even at the expense of the dignity at respect due to other communities. Something must be done against this madness.

Jamal Parris must provide an adequate warrant for his claim.

To to those blowing this issue out of proportionality (journalist in particular), be careful on the information you are passing on to the public regarding this issue.

This is the first step to take place before Bishop Long goes to court.
civil law
In civil litigation, the burden of proof is initially on the plaintiff. However, there are a number of technical situations in which the burden shifts to the defendant. For example, when the plaintiff has made a prima facie case, the burden shifts to the defendant to refute or rebut the plaintiff's evidence.

A defendant who is found "not guilty" of a more serious charge can not have a second trial on a lesser included offense. For example, if D is found "not guilty" on a charge of felony murder (e.g., incidental killing of someone during the commission of a felony, such as robbery), then D can not be tried for the underlying felony (e.g., robbery).

The prosecution can not appeal a "not guilty" verdict. Of course, the criminal defendant can appeal a "guilty" verdict and an incarcerated criminal can file a "habeas corpus" writ.

These are only examples. One only need to lookup the laws to understand the out come.

We still do not know all the facts. How do we know these boys didn't lure him? These days, teenage boys and girls are involved in a lot of sexual activities. I'm just saying......
Perhaps we should keep an open mind. Everyone is crucifying Mr. Long but these boys do not have clean hands. One of them broke into the church - that's criminal minded.

Lure him to do what? Bishop Long is old enough to be responsible for his own actions. The same might not be said of all teenagers.

As I have previously asked, who inferred the title of "bishop" on him? Did he attend theology school or seminary? Is he a legimate minister or a mail order preacher? Remember what the Lord said, "It will be harder for a rich man to enter heaven than for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle." Maybe that's why he's creating a "heaven on earth" for himself. He couldn't pass muster to get through those pearly gates. Part of the blame is his flock of supporters, who gladly provide his lifestyle. Poor, misguided souls trusting this charleton. "And the meek shal inherit the earth." Let's hope so.

His masters of divinity is from an accredited institution, his PhD is from a non-accredited institution.

He named himself "Bishop" and that alone makes him suspect in my book.

The Greek word translated as “bishop” merely mean “overseer.” I don’t understand why his use of bishop should be more suspect than any other organizations use of the term.

The term bishop is for a specific office. It is an office that is traditional within the Catholic, Anglican, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Orthodox, and Mormon faiths. It is not a tradition of the Baptist faith. A bishop is an appointed position. Generally a bishop has a responsibility for priests. He oversees the priests. A bishop is answerable to a higher authority. In the Catholic faith, the bishop is answerable to the Arch-bishop. In the Mormon faith, a bishop is answerable to the stake president. Bishops in the Roman Catholic, Anglican, and Orthodox churches trace their lineage back to Christ's apostles through the process of Apostolic Succession. Because the Mormon Faith makes a claim of restoration of the church, they may also claim Apostolic Succession.

None of these faiths have bishops as self appointed loose cannons. The office of bishop is woven into the fabric of their faiths. Baptist Churches are not organized in the same manner as Catholic Churches or these other churches. The term bishop should not be plucked up anymore than the term pope should. Anyone may start a Baptist Church and given this anyone can call himself anything. That makes about as much sense as mail order theology degrees. I suppose if Eddie Long decides to call his church a cathedral, that makes sense to some people. The protestant reformation was about putting distance between Catholic tradition and the new movement. To now say "Bishop" turns that movement on its head.

Now, I'm not backing Eddie Long whatsoever, however, he doesn't need to go to a school or seminary to be able to preach. Jesus didn't require this of his followers. Also, the scriptures aren't suggesting that we can't be wealthy. Jesus is stating that a person that puts so much emphasis on material possessions and loves money/wealth more than him, will no enter into the Kingdom of the heavens.

His followers should not be supporting his lifestyle. Actually, he shouldn't be charging for anything. Jesus told his disciples to not ask for money, nor charge for healing or speaking. "You receive free, you give free.

This Pastor is wrong on so many levels. His followers are so enamored by his wealth that they can't see through his act.
11:43 AM on 10/04/2010
His 'act' is what they pay to see.

Why is he referring to the Holy Spirit as the Holy Ghost?? Does he not know the difference? The bible states that God's Holy Spirit his his active force. When we are told to pray for Holy Spirit, we are asking for God's help or a portion of his power to aid us. Even the Universe was created by this Spirit or "force" from God.

A ghost is defined as: "The spirit of a dead person, especially one believed to appear in bodily likeness to living persons or to haunt former habitats." Nor is it a angel or demon. It comes from God and it's his power.

One would think a Bishop would know that.

Actually, the New Testament was written in Greek. Some translations use the term "Ghost" where others use "Spirit" for the exact same Greek term. Even in English, the terms "ghost" and "spirit" are often used interchangeably.

oh, yes that's right. The King James translators were consistent in their use of "Holy Ghost" to distinguish the the 3rd person of the Trinity.

(smile) the "Holy Ghost" is from the 1611 English of the King James translation of the Bible, the words "Holy Spirit" which are used in most newer more modern translations are not to be found in the text.

This might be why a surprising number of black folk continue to use this rather comforting sounding phrase...

Eddie Long will come out of this unscathered and stronger. Eddie Long will go from a successful pastor to almost Billy Graham status after this is all done. Here in Atlanta he has gained support. Another boy who got kicked out of the inner circle came on t.v and said the Bishop did it because he got caught doing wrong in the church, and said those other boys are just angry because the Bishop kicked them out for doing wrong. Its what I always thought. This is a shakedown, nothing less. Bishop Eddie Long will not only win, this may not even go to court. What I think will happen next, is one of the accusers will retract thei accusation, and the whole thing will fall apart. His accusers are losing credibility day by day, They will be clothed in shame when its all said and done. The Bishop will be just fine.

Why do you say this? He appears to have had a very impressive ministry, which make the current accusations even more tragic. Human being tend to be complex creatures, being loving and caring one minute, and cruel and uncaring the next minute. The line separating good from evil runs though the heart of everyone.

And stop believing anyone who tells you that God told them something that you can't read in 'the book' for yourself. Nobody is 'special'. Especially if they say things like "God told me He wants me to be rich". or "God's word is like sperm".

Agreed. I have always hated it when people said that. I love God and His Son...I believe that I have a great relationship with Him. If Christ Jesus dwells withing you, He knows you and the sound of your voice. If God needs to tell me or show me anything He will do all by himself
