Whitman, Brown Spar Over Maid Scandal In Heated Debate

Whitman Brown

FRESNO, Calif. — GOP gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman and Democratic rival Jerry Brown traded barbs over immigration policy and Whitman's illegal immigrant housekeeper during a heated debate that was aimed at California's growing Latino population.

Both candidates hoped to score points with the crucial voting bloc during Saturday's face-off, the first to air statewide on Spanish-language television. Whitman acknowledged early on that she cannot win the governor's race without Latino votes.

Whitman had planned to use the debate at California State University, Fresno to move on from a controversy that has dominated headlines this week after it was revealed she had an illegal immigrant housekeeper for nine years.

The billionaire former eBay chief executive, who has spent $119 million of her own money on the race, tried instead to focus on her campaign themes of creating jobs and improving the state's public school system.

But with so much attention on issues related to immigration policy, Whitman was forced to explain her conservative positions while Brown had many opportunities to bring up the housekeeper.

When the debate moderator asked Whitman about her treatment of the worker, she accused Brown's campaign of orchestrating the controversy and sacrificing the maid "on the altar of your political ambitions." Brown fired back that Whitman has not taken responsibility and is not fit to be governor.

"Don't run for governor if you can't stand up on your own two feet and say, 'Hey I made a mistake,'" Brown said in a moment fraught with tension as the two candidates, neck-and-neck in the polls, turned away from the audience and faced each other directly. "You have blamed her, blamed me, blamed the left, blamed the unions. But you don't take accountability."

Whitman's campaign has worked hard to win support among independents and Latinos, who are crucial to the campaign of any Republican running in a state in which Democrats hold a 13.4 percentage point edge among registered voters.

But Democrats hope to exploit the housekeeper controversy as a way to question Whitman's character. Whitman fired the woman in June 2009, immediately after she said she found out the housekeeper was in the country illegally.

She then refused to help when the woman asked for help pursuing legal residency. Whitman said the decision was the right one at the time.

She said she had no reason to believe the housekeeper, Nicky Diaz Santillan, was illegal, and had to act within the law.

"We hired Nicky because she had all the appropriate documents, we went through a hiring agency, and then in June of 2009 she came to me to tell me that she was here illegally and did not have the appropriate documents," she said. "I made the hardest decision I have almost made in my life, which was to let her go. ... So it broke my heart. It was incredibly difficult for me to do."

Brown said it was shabby for Whitman not to offer at least initial help to the housekeeper, whom Whitman has described as being like a member of her extended family.

"When someone works with you, you do have familial bonds and ties, and I think if that story is to be believed, I think Meg flunked the most fundamental test of all, and that is to treat people with respect and decency," he told reporters in a post-debate news conference.

Whitman also is addressing allegations from the housekeeper's attorney that she and her husband, a Stanford neurosurgeon, should have suspected the worker's status because of a Social Security Administration letter mailed to their home in 2003.

Gloria Allred, the housekeeper's attorney, is a longtime supporter of Democratic candidates. Whitman told reporters after the debate the controversy is a sideshow from the issues Californians want to focus on, such as jobs and education.

Brown and Whitman had several lengthy exchanges over high-profile immigration issues, including whether illegal immigrants already in the country should be able to seek citizenship and whether the government should crack down on employers who hire illegal workers. They also sparred over the DREAM Act, which would let U.S. high school graduates who were brought into the country illegally as children become legal residents after spending two years in college or the military.

"We need a better e-verify system, three strikes and you're out, you get fined, you lose your business license," Whitman said about her belief that employers need to be targeted. "If we do not hold employers accountable, we will never get our arms around this very challenging problem,"

Brown pounced.

"Ms. Whitman obviously didn't crack down on herself," he said. "This is a question of talking out of both sides of her mouth."

The candidates also faced a question about the DREAM Act from a woman who said she was a senior at the university and was an illegal immigrant. Without a pathway to citizenship, she won't be able to work legally after graduation, even though she was at the top of her class when she graduated from a California high school. Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a state DREAM Act bill just days ago.

Brown said he would sign the law if it came to him as governor. Whitman opposes it.

"She wants to kick you out of the school because you are not documented, and that is wrong – morally and humanly," he told the woman.

Whitman said California citizens should have first crack at California's overcrowded colleges, which are under financial strain because of budget cuts.

"This is a very tough situation, but I don't think it's fair to the people who are here in California legally," she said. "I don't think we can carve out a group of illegal immigrants and get them a path to citizenship when we haven't sorted out control of our borders and getting our arms around illegal immigration."

Whitman reiterated her opposition to a path to citizenship and tried to shift blame for immigration problems to the federal government, saying the first priority should be securing the border with Mexico. Brown said he would treat all Californians equally "as God's children."

"You don't just bring in semi-serfs and say do our dirty work, and then we're finished with you like an orange and just throw it away. That's after you've squeezed it. That's not right," he said.

Whitman said later that her messages of job creation and improving K-12 schools are resonating with Latino voters, and she'll continue to focus on that.

"Without jobs, there is no future. Without keeping California's businesses here, there is no future," she said. "Every Latino family that I have run into says if we do not fix our education system there is no way forward, and so I am deeply committed to education."

running a company is like a kingdom hire what one likes fire what one doesnt need

in a recession layoff workers millions to balance lower revenue with costs

running a state is not like that fire what one doesnt need ? send millions of people our of state or out of country ? hire what one likes , where from, china ?

maenwhile laid off workers are a cost to the gov. companies are saving money on less workers while the state on lower tax revenue from less employed has to pay for worker releif

unlikea company, the gov has a education department to pay for whose graduates are FREE for companies ; i would charge companies a graduation fee for graduates they hire

has any top CEO ever made a good governor or president
bush was CEO of the texas rangers
eevry problem america has now was caused or asacerbated by republicans

if a governor goes alittle left wing, the capitalist bosses in the state [ wall st today ] sit on their hands knowing that peopel will blame the gov rather than them for a slowdown

this was very effective when Bob Rae was premier of Ontario ; Bay street didnt do anything to improve the economy

before the recent recession canada's 5 big banks had $ 18 000 000 000 in profits previous year but asked for $ 25 000 000 000 bailout in 2008 ; what happened to the $18 000 000 000 in profits in

Well, according to research, Brown was responsible for nearly crippling California’s agricultural industry by refusing to spray for the med fly until it was nearly too late.( He is quite the environmentalist) Then because of this same stand he doubled our car tax and raised the gas tax and tried about 15 other attempts at raising taxes. He increased spending by 120% and had an 11% unemployment rate while in office. Lastly, he gave us “Rose Byrd” enufsaid….

raise taxes on billionaires like Meg and other multi-millionaires in Kaullifornia - if Meg can afford 119 million dollars on her campaign, surely she can cough up a few million for the state she wants to be governor of - raise the highest tax rate 5% on income over $250K and close all tax breaks, credits and loopholes on income over $250K

and make sure to severely punish employers who hire illegal workers - that might mean that grapes and tomatoes cost a bit more - if there is no work for illegals, they won't cross the border

Personally, at this point I don't care who Whitman is or what she has done. Anybody who runs against Brown is better a candidate. I would rather see Ms. Soandso's 3rd grade class running California than letting Brown anywhere near the Sacremento. Jerry Brown represents everything that is wrong with our governing bodies. He is nothing but a mouth-piece of the special insterests. He has the gall to complain about spending then proposes millions of new programming. Save CA, vote for anybody but Jerry Brown.

Exactly how I personally feel about Jerry Brown. As for Whitman (I think you may have a spelling issue), I don't believe I'm promoting anybody. Now to come down to your level, anybody with half a brain would understand the negative impact of Jerry Brown's politics and policies. Look for yourself, you can't claim ignorance because the information isn't out there. You can find information on just about every policy he promoted or attacked.

This state is going downhill fast. Since the dumocrats have had basic control for the last several years and had Arnold doing their bidding I would have to say that to re-elect Brown when he was such a dismal failure last time around would indeed be a "witless" move.
However, I know California will never be free of Dumocratic control. There are too many people here who demand and expect entitlements, even some who aren't here legally....

Immigration is an important issue here in California since a border state knows all sides of the situation.
For me, the fact that a smart, wealthy, well connected woman, who knew she wanted to run for governor of a border state- did not even TRY to help this woman get legal status after knowing her for 9 years, was telling and the most damning words were Meg's own- " I fired her as soon as she told me she was not legal"...Come on- at least show some savvy lady- pick up a phone and see if you can't help her get legal----no? wow.
That is a true CEO for you- the big screw you. If nothing is in it for them that is.
PLEASE! Keep her away from California!

There are very few choices for someone here illegally to suddenly change their status. The system simply doesn't work that way, nor should it. A person can't break our immigration laws, steal ID, commit tax evasion/fraud and suddenly be all forgiven. Whitman did the best she could in the situation by not turning this woman in - which is being used against her at every turn as she is labeled a hypocrite.

Do I like Whitman? No, but Brown doesn't float my wheaties either.

The one thing we know for sure. The maid knowingly broke many laws. Whitmans guilt is not proven or even at this point been shown with enough evidence to procede against her if we prosecuted every employer hiring an illegal - there is just NOTHING to show she knew the maid was illegal. It is likely her husband may have known but possibly not as the note shows he made an inquiry, possibly to the maid herself, to fix the problem. That seems very plausable since the maid had the letter in her possession. So if the husband didn't give the maid the letter (in order to correct a possible mistake by social security who we know NEVER make mistakes) do we add mail theft charges against the maid?

If it is a big deal that someone broke immigration laws than it should be a bigger deal that someone hired them- that is the whole reason we have people coming here, because Americans like cheap labor.
So before I blame the poor- I will take the people who knowingly exploit cheap labor to task. Which means everyone of us who eat food in this country- since cheap labor is picking fruit and vegetables and slaughtering our animals- all for below minimum wage in non-union shops. So you can pretend you don't know, like Whitman, but it is in all our houses.
And my comment on Whitman stands- she did nothing but fire her, when she could have easily invested some time and effort towards getting the maid legal status. That is her reaction, than she is just a CEO-type, not a real problem solver- which is the type of person we need in office.
How many millions has she spent on her campaign to win California?
For me, Brown is both environmental and progressive and that is more than enough to float my oats.

Democraks in California and throughout the nation are incapable of contemplating the level of irrelevance contained in these type of political media stunts. It doesn't matter as long as the lefty wins, right?

Boo hoo... Meg treated her housekeeper bad... didn't follow up with a private investigator to see if she was legal. Meanwhile the state slides further into the dumpster.

Al Qaeda just announced they are giving up. They believe Democrats and their liberal main screech media pals will do to America what they wanted to do. No need to fight.. just watch CNN all day.

And don't forget the 4 trillion dollar debt from Bush and Republicranks wasted and lost in Iraq- the biggest boondoggle of American history.
Were you thinking about your grandkids when you took all those tax cuts while our country was at war? Boo hoo yourself.
11:52 PM on 10/10/2010
No, boo hoo, that Meg hired an illegal worker and I think that's breaking the law, isn't it? Not only that, but Meg gave away job that an American could have had. So Meg breaks the law and is anti-American worker. She might as well be Lou Dobbs in drag.

Uh huh... Jerry IS good, then! I'd be thrilled to elect a time-traveling governor - since you obviously believe he went back 10 years and planted that illegal worker in her home, knowing that someday she'd run for governor against him. Seriously – NO ONE except the Whitman camp has accused Brown of having anything to do with it. She’s been trying to smear Jerry’s record for MONTHS now with her lying ads. Now it’s HIS fault that she’s caught in a huge mess, too? Wrong! Try again!

Whitman's Former Nanny Believes Nicky Diaz

Jill Armstrong says she has good reason to accept Mexican housekeeper Nicandra Diaz Santillan's tale of working in the household of GOP gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman - because Armstrong herself was a domestic for the former eBay CEO.

"I totally believe" Diaz, Armstrong, 59, of Mountain View, said in an interview with The Chronicle. "I know the family. I know what it was like."

Deeply committed to education Whitless sez ... while her Party has been cutting education budgets EVERY opportunity it gets!

Whitless "fails" to realize that Latino's and ALL CA's WANT MORE monies made available for this purpose WHILE her potential colleges VOTED ... NO .. to the bill the Obama Admin signed into law that elimanated the Bankers as middlemen in the Student Loan programs ... thus freeing up MORE monies FOR education! Duhhhh!

Talking out of "both" sides of her mouth IS what she has shown she does best!

119 MILLION dollars for a governership ... how much HAS she given to support her stated "strong" belief?

NONE that WE KNOW of!

In FACT, she has NOT even voted for this "strongly" held belief ... or anything else on CA previous ballots ... AND to VOTE ... costs NOTHING!

WOW ... and she NOW wants the citizens of CA vote???

As I've written above ... WHITLESS!!!!

TO ALL THE GOOF BALLS ON THIS THREAD who are defending Whitman's hypocrisy:
Whitman has known about this story for at least a year and she chose to shove her head in the sand and hope the news would never surface-- a very unshrewd and STUPID thing to do as a person campaigning in a high stakes election. She should have gotten out in front of the story and revealed it herself. That's not Brown's problem. And while I'm certain he's not unhappy about this news, there is NO WAY he would risk his political reputation and the campaign by having a hand in any of this. NO WAY. So as much as Whitman wants us to view her as a political outsider and a savvy businesswoman who would magically fix all that ails California, the moral of the story is: Whitman has terrible judgment, she doesn't take responsibility for breaking the law, and she is not a savvy businessperson. Can you picture her negotiating immigration reform after this? NO WAY! Who would listen to her?

thank you; ALSO why has NOT more been made of that "shoving" contest she got into when she was still ceo at ebay--------it was some flap in a discussion w/ Reuters, I recall---it's been a while, and they tried to hush it over. But she apparently INITIATED the "shove" at her Asian communications person--------either SHE OR EBAY paid a LOT to shut this story up so the other person would not talk-------this was several years back and maybe the payoff still stops telling; nonetheless, I would say this falls to: 1. judgement 2. "short fuse" in communications or not getting one's way. We won't even get into the cross-cultural aspects, but this episode should be dug up and vetted more-

In 2007, she [Meg] physically assaulted an eBay employee who was trying to prepare her for a press interview. The employee pressed charges and later settled out of court. Here's the New York Times story:

>>>In June 2007, an eBay employee claimed that Ms. Whitman became angry and forcefully pushed her in an executive conference room at eBay's headquarters, according to multiple former eBay employees with knowledge of the incident. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because the matter was delicate and was deemed to be strictly confidential.

The employee, Young Mi Kim, was preparing Ms. Whitman for a news media interview that day. Ms. Kim, who was not injured in the incident, hired a lawyer and threatened a lawsuit, but the dispute was resolved under the supervision of a private mediator. Two of the former employees said the company paid a six-figure financial settlement to Ms. Kim, which one of them characterized as "around $200,000.

first, i want you to know that i appreciate that you are honestly willing to discuss the issue instead of just dropping word bombs.

you stated what i believe was genuine empathy toward illegal immigrants. then you expressed concern for the very real problem of enforcement at the federal level.

i do have a serious question then for you.

the feds were obviously pursuing this issue when they sent their letter to the whitmans regarding their employees social security number. i have received the same letter in my experience as a general manager to a mlti-million dollar business in the state of californa. the letter states very clearly that the employer is required by law to complete and return. whitman obviously did not.

do you not think that ms whitman's actions were counter productive towards solving what we both agree is a problem?
