Despite Joe Miller Calling Federal Aid Unconstitutional, His Wife Received Unemployment Benefits

Joe Miller Wife Unemployment Benefits

Alaska Senate candidate Joe Miller admitted Monday that his wife had received unemployment benefits in 2002 after she left a job serving as his aide.

At the time, Miller had been serving as a part-time magistrate judge in the Fairbanks District Court, a position that he held from June 21, 2002 through June 1, 2004, according to the Alaska Dispatch. His wife, Kathleen Miller, was hired to be his part-time clerk for six months, between June 2002 and December. When she left the position at the end of that year, she briefly went on unemployment insurance, Miller said Monday.

Miller made the following statement to Alaska blogger and Lisa Murkowski supporter Andrew Halcro:

My wife, Kathleen, did work for me as a magistrate judge clerk/secretary while I was a part-time Federal Magistrate judge from 2002 to 2004. Before 2004 there was a long-standing practice, both in Fairbanks as well as other areas in the United States, that due to the time commitments of being a lawyer and a part-time Federal Magistrate judge the same individuals that worked in your private law offices also worked in your federal magistrate office - many of those being family members. Before even applying for the Fairbanks Magistrate judgeship I spoke with members of the federal court concerning the employment of Kathleen. It was confirmed that she could work for me in my office. After leaving my office Kathleen did receive unemployment benefits for a short period of time.

According to Halcro, Kathleen Miller was terminated because of a violation of nepotism rules, a claim that adds an extra wrinkle in the Alaska Senate race due to the criticism of Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who was granted the seat in 2004 by her father, Frank Murkowski, who had vacated it to serve as the state's governor.

"According to sources, a few years back, a judicial magistrate hired his wife in violation of nepotism rules. He had to fire his wife, who then went on to claim unemployment benefits," Halcro wrote in a blog post.

Miller has denied that allegation.

The admission that Miller's wife received unemployment benefits is particularly significant considering the Tea Party-backed Senate candidate's public stance on the federal provisions, which he has called unconstitutional.

And this isn't the first time Miller has taken flak for supposed hypocrisy. Last month, the Miller campaign was forced to concede that the GOP candidate had received $7,235 in subsidies from the U.S. Department of Agriculture between 1991 and 1997, despite his platform of slashing federal government handouts.

On Monday, Joe Miller raised eyebrows when he added another staple to his small government message by announcing his belief that federal minimum wage laws were unconstitutional, and should instead be left up to the states' determination.

Sweet. He illegally hires his wife, then she gets unemployment when they're caught. He also got agriculture subsidies, the sine qua non of federal handouts. Besides that, he's made a career out of being employed by government. Yeah, he sounds like a real rugged, individualist with untainted independence principles. NOT. He's been leeching on the taxpayers since he quit sucking on his mama's teats. A real tea party man.

Let's see! Joe's army pay came from the Federal Goverment, His wife's unemployment pay came from the Federal Goverment,He got 2,000.00 per child to home school his children from the federal Goverment, His magestrate pay came from the Federal Goverment. Got farm substidys from the Federal Goverment! Seems to me Joe Miller/wife/family lived on the Federal Goverment money about 90% of their lives for several years----------Here he stands saying he's against the Alaska people getting the very Federal Gov. hand outs that kept him an his families head above water from drowning completely. What is good for JOE MILLER is NOT GOOD FOR HIS FELLO ALASKIAN,THEY DON'T DESERVE IT LIKE HE DOES-------RIGHT ALASKANS?

I am for drug testing JOE MILLERS WIFE, an the cost put on their tab, as alaska can't afford to have all the unemployed tessted for drug use! I also think it's a good idea to have ALL the Cadidates drug tested to-------we don't want a Rush L. to sneak into the white house now do we! Sense I am afraid alcohol is a bad thing/drug------I think every one in washington needs to be tested an make it mandentory to do so for drug/alcohol once a week. After all the average Joe doesn't get to drink/drug on the job why should Senators/Congressman an their aids?

... and Joe Miller’s Education at West Point & salary as an Army officer was paid for by FEDERAL GOVERNMENT (for his shorter-than-obligated stint. How did Joe Miller receive such SPECIAL treatment from Uncle Fed?)

...and Joe Miller’s salary as a part-time State Judge was paid by STATE GOVERNMENT.

And Joe Miller’s salary as a part-time Federal Magistrate was paid by FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

And Joe Miller’s salary as the part-time Fairbanks, AK North Star Borough Attorney AND his Masters in Economics degree were PAID FOR by LOCAL GOVERNMENT.

AND, although most of his personal income was earned via his private practice at the time, his HEALTH INSURANCE was a benefit provided through part-time work at the Borough!

AND his enormous family receives money from Alaska State govt. to home school his eight kids (about $2,000 per kid) and EACH family member (as Alaska residents) receives an Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend check. In 2008, when The PFD paid-out $3,269 PER PERSON (when a one-time $1,200 Alaska Resource Rebate was added to the dividend amount), the Miller family - with EIGHT kids - received $32,690 just in PFD!, about $16,000 for home schooling eight kids and about $1,555.00 for a Federal Farm Subsidy for land in Kansas.

ALL THAT was over $50,000.00 in JUST state and federal government SUBSIDIES - for 2008! And THAT'S EXCLUDING Joes' Salary!

His wife's resume
http://community.adn.com/sites/community.adn.com/files/MillerResume.pdf

This tells me one thing. She could not have been eligible for unemployment benefits, as she remained employed by his law firm. In addition, to be eligible, she had to be ready to accept full time employment. Seems hard to do while homeschooling 8 kids. I would love to see her application for UE benefits.

The penalty for providing false info on an UE application includes prison.

He tries to argue that what he did in the past has no bearing on his current platforms.... I think that is clear political speak to cover his rear in the future. If elected, expect broken campaign promises (By the way, he has already flopped on stances since the primary....)

This is just one more example of the Tea Party who think the rules don't apply to them. Do any of these people actually follow the rules that they are constantly railing about?

Typical tbag mantra: It's ok FOR ME, but not for all you lazy drug addicts. Wonder how ol' joe would react if HIS had to take a drug test for ump?

Personally, if I HAD to go on unemployment, I wouldn't have a problem with taking a drug test. I have nothing to hide. ~

Joe Miller can be compared to Fidel Castro, like most Tea Baggers, Miller just wants to be in Power for his own benefit.
01:39 PM on 10/06/2010
If it's so unconstitutional, give me my money back. I am fortunate enough to have only needed it once, and was taxed on it. Stop taking it out of my payroll check. Most people pay into it at every job they've ever had in their lives. So in reality, they owe me!!

And who paid you? The federal govt or the state? Do all states have the same pay rate? Her in MI they don't take it out of your paycheck. The employer pays into it, quite a bit to state and a tiny amount to federal. The state rate varies based on the employers history of unemployment payouts through the state.
